1. Understanding the SQA Higher Accounting Course | 了解 SQA 高级会计课程

The SQA Higher Accounting course develops your ability to record, present and interpret financial information. It is divided into two main areas: Financial Accounting and Management Accounting. In Financial Accounting you will learn how to prepare final accounts for sole traders, partnerships and limited companies, while Management Accounting introduces costing, budgeting and decision-making techniques. The final assessment consists of a question paper and an assignment that tests both knowledge and practical application.

Before you start, make sure you are comfortable with National 5 topics such as the double-entry system, trial balance and basic profit determination. The step up to Higher involves more complex adjustments, deeper analysis and a greater emphasis on internal control and ethical behaviour. Use this bridging course to identify any gaps early and fill them during the summer.

2. The Accounting Equation |

Every financial transaction affects the accounting equation, which is the foundation of the entire double-entry system. The equation states that the total assets of a business are always equal to the sum of its liabilities and equity. This relationship ensures that the statement of financial position always balances and that every transaction has a dual effect.

Assets = Liabilities + Equity

For example, when a business buys inventory for cash, one asset (inventory) increases while another asset (cash) decreases, leaving the equation unchanged. When it borrows money from a bank, both assets (cash) and liabilities (loan) increase by the same amount. Understanding this logic is essential before you tackle ledger entries and the preparation of financial statements.

3. Double-Entry Bookkeeping Reminders |

Double-entry bookkeeping means that every transaction is recorded twice: once as a debit and once as a credit. The total value of debit entries must always equal the total value of credit entries. This system helps to minimise errors and makes it easier to trace the origin of each figure in the accounts.

To apply the rules correctly, remember: assets, expenses and drawings increase with debits and decrease with credits. Liabilities, capital and income increase with credits and decrease with debits. In the SQA Higher course you will extend these rules to adjustments such as accruals, prepayments and depreciation, so a solid recall of the basics is vital.

4. Source Documents and Books of Prime Entry |

Before a transaction reaches the ledgers, it is first recorded on a source document such as an invoice, credit note, cheque counterfoil or receipt. These documents provide the evidence needed to enter information into the books of prime entry, which summarise similar transactions in one place.

The main books of prime entry include the sales day book, purchases day book, returns inwards book, returns outwards book, cash book and the general journal. At Higher level you are expected to understand how these books link to the ledgers and how the totals are posted at the end of each period.

5. Ledger Accounts and the Trial Balance |

From the books of prime entry, individual transactions are posted to the nominal (general) ledger, which contains separate accounts for each asset, liability, income and expense item. The sales ledger records customers’ accounts, while the purchases ledger records suppliers’ accounts. This structure allows businesses to track exactly how much is owed and to whom.

At the end of a period, a trial balance is extracted by listing all the closing balances from the nominal ledger. If total debit balances equal total credit balances, the books are said to be ‘in balance’. However, a balanced trial balance does not guarantee error-free accounts – errors of omission, commission and principle may still exist. This is an important Higher-level evaluation point.

6. Adjustments for Accruals and Prepayments |

One of the key topics that separates Higher from National 5 is the treatment of accruals and prepayments. The accruals concept requires that expenses and income are matched to the period in which they are incurred or earned, regardless of when cash is paid or received. This ensures that the income statement presents a true and fair view of profit for the period.

An accrual is an expense that has been incurred but not yet paid by the year-end, such as electricity used but not billed. It is added to the expense in the income statement and shown as a current liability. A prepayment is an amount paid in advance, such as insurance, and is deducted from the expense and shown as a current asset. Students need to be able to calculate the correct charge to the income statement and the statement of financial position entry.

7. Depreciation of Non-Current Assets |

Non-current assets, such as machinery and vehicles, lose value over time due to wear and tear, obsolescence or the passage of time. Depreciation spreads the cost of the asset over its useful life in accordance with the matching principle. The two methods you must master for Higher are the straight-line method and the reducing balance method.

Straight-line depreciation charges an equal amount each year: (Cost – Residual Value) / Useful Life. Reducing balance applies a fixed percentage to the net book value each year, resulting in higher charges in early years. In the higher course, you will record both the depreciation expense in the income statement and the accumulated depreciation in the statement of financial position.

8. Preparation of Financial Statements for Sole Traders |

A core skill in Higher Accounting is preparing an income statement and a statement of financial position for sole traders from a trial balance that includes adjustments. The income statement shows gross profit, calculated as sales less cost of sales, and profit for the year after deducting all operating expenses. The statement of financial position uses the format: non-current assets plus net current assets minus non-current liabilities equals net assets, which is financed by capital.

Pupils must be able to incorporate closing inventory, accruals, prepayments, depreciation and irrecoverable debts into the final accounts. The layout of each statement must follow the accepted format, and all workings should be clearly shown. Practising full-length questions over the summer will help you become faster and more accurate.

9. Introduction to Ratio Analysis |

Ratio analysis allows you to interpret the financial statements and assess a business’s profitability, liquidity and efficiency. At Higher level you will learn to calculate and comment on ratios such as gross profit margin, net profit margin, current ratio, acid test ratio, return on capital employed and inventory turnover. Each ratio tells a different part of the story, and comparison with previous years or industry averages adds analytical depth.

For example, a decline in gross margin might indicate rising purchase costs or increased discounting. A current ratio below 1 suggests possible cash flow problems. Your answers should not simply state the figure but explain possible causes and suggest appropriate actions management could take.

10. Budgeting and Cash Budgets |

Budgeting is a vital management accounting tool that helps businesses plan and control their finances. A cash budget forecasts the inflows and outflows of cash over a future period, often month by month. It highlights times when the business may face a cash deficit or surplus, allowing managers to arrange overdraft facilities or invest short-term surplus funds in advance.

When constructing a cash budget, remember that only cash items are included; non-cash expenses such as depreciation are ignored. You must carefully consider credit periods for sales and purchases, and account for the timing of capital expenditure, loan repayments and VAT if applicable. Practice with varied scenarios will sharpen your forecasting judgement.

11. Using ICT in Accounting |

Modern accounting relies heavily on ICT. Spreadsheet software such as Excel is used extensively to record transactions, generate reports and perform what-if analysis. In your Higher assignment and examinations, you may be required to interpret formulas, cell references and data validation techniques. Understanding features like SUM, AVERAGE, IF statements and pivot tables will support both your coursework and future studies.

Furthermore, accounting software packages automate many routine bookkeeping tasks, but a thorough grasp of double-entry principles remains essential to spot errors and understand the logic behind system-generated entries. As part of your bridging study, you could practise setting up a simple spreadsheet to track income and expenses and generate a trial balance.

12. Ethics and Internal Controls |

Accountants must act ethically and maintain the integrity of financial information. The SQA Higher syllabus covers topics such as the need for internal control procedures, the role of segregation of duties, authorisation of transactions and physical safeguards over assets. You will also discuss the limitations of internal control and the importance of an ethical culture.

Common exam questions ask you to suggest controls for a given scenario, such as cash handling in a retail shop or the prevention of employee fraud. Strong answers link specific weaknesses to potential consequences and recommend practical control measures, using terms such as bank reconciliations, inventory counts and purchase order systems. This revision topic ties together your knowledge of the accounting system and its real-world application.
