1. Core Textures |

Texture describes how many layers of sound are heard and how they relate. Monophony is a single unaccompanied line – think ‘mono’ as in one. Homophony features a prominent melody supported by chords that move in the same rhythm; picture a lead singer strumming block chords. Polyphony interweaves two or more independent melodies, common in fugues. Heterophony occurs when two instruments or voices simultaneously play the same melody with slight decorative differences, typical of some folk traditions. Contrapuntal texture is a refined type of polyphony, ruled by counterpoint where melodic lines are rhythmically independent yet harmonically interdependent.

速记首字母 M-H-P-H 组成一句话:Monks Have Purple Hats,帮你记牢 Monophony、Homophony、Polyphony、Heterophony。

2. Harmonic Language & Cadences |

Cadences are the punctuation of music. A perfect cadence (V–I) sounds complete and final, like a full stop; memorise ‘Perfect Pleases the ear (V–I)’. A plagal cadence (IV–I) is the ‘Amen’ cadence, heard at the end of hymns – think ‘Plagal Prayers’. An imperfect cadence (I–V, ii–V, etc.) feels unfinished, ending on the dominant – ‘Imperfect has no end’. An interrupted cadence (V–vi, often in a minor key V–VI) surprises the listener; imagine the cadence ‘Interrupting’ your expectation. Other crucial harmonic terms include diatonic (notes within the key), chromatic (using notes outside the key), consonant and dissonant intervals, and a pedal note (a sustained or repeated note, usually in the bass, while harmonies change above it).

3. Melodic Motion & Devices |

Melodic movement falls into conjunct (stepwise) and disjunct (leaping) motion. A sequence repeats a motif at a higher or lower pitch, often building tension. An ostinato is a persistently repeated melodic, rhythmic or harmonic pattern; in pop music you hear riffs. The range is the distance between the lowest and highest notes, while tessitura describes the most comfortable part of that range. Don’t confuse a leitmotif (a recurring theme representing a character or idea, popularised by Wagner) with a motif – a leitmotif carries extra-musical meaning. Other devices include triadic melody (based on chord notes), scalic passages, and decoration such as passing notes and auxiliary notes.

4. Rhythm, Metre & Tempo |

Metre organises beats into regular groups: duple (2), triple (3) or quadruple (4). Simple time has beats divisible by 2, while compound time divides beats into 3 (e.g. 6/8). Syncopation shifts the accent to weak beats or off-beats, creating a sense of forward drive. Hemiola is a special effect where two bars of triple metre are temporarily articulated as three bars of duple, common in Baroque and Romantic music. An anacrusis is an upbeat or pick-up note before the first full bar. Cross-rhythm occurs when conflicting rhythmic patterns sound together, such as triplets against duplets. Tempo markings are normally in Italian: Allegro (fast, cheerful), Andante (walking pace), Adagio (slow), Presto (very fast). Use word association: ‘Allegro – all legs running fast’, ‘Andante – strolling at an even pace’.

速度标记通常为意大利语:Allegro(快板,欢快)、Andante(行板,步行速度)、Adagio(慢板)、Presto(急板)。

5. Tonality & Modality |

Tonality refers to the gravitational pull of a central note – the tonic. Major keys sound bright, minor keys sadder. Modulation is a change of key within a piece; related keys share many notes, while a sudden shift to a distant key creates dramatic contrast. Atonal music avoids any tonal centre, and bitonality uses two keys at once. Modal music uses ancient church modes: Ionian (major), Dorian (natural minor with raised 6th), Phrygian (minor with lowered 2nd), Lydian (major with raised 4th), Mixolydian (major with lowered 7th), Aeolian (natural minor), Locrian (diminished tonic). Mnemonic: ‘I Don’t Play Loud Music After Lunch’ – Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, Locrian. Exam questions may ask you to identify the tonality of a passage and comment on its effect.

I Don’t Play Loud Music After Lunch’ – 对应各调式首字母。

6. Dynamics & Articulation |

Dynamics indicate volume: pp (pianissimo, very soft), p (piano, soft), mp (mezzo-piano, moderately soft), mf (mezzo-forte, moderately loud), f (forte, loud), ff (fortissimo, very loud). Gradual changes are crescendo (getting louder) and diminuendo or decrescendo (getting softer). Sforzando (sfz) means a sudden strong accent on a single note or chord. Articulation tells performers how to play or sing individual notes. Legato is smooth and connected – think ‘legs gliding smoothly’. Staccato is short and detached – imagine a ‘cat’ jumping. Tenuto (ten.) holds the note for its full value, marcato is marked and accented, and accents (> or Ʌ) stress a note more than surrounding ones. Put them in a favourite song dynamic profile to feel the contrasts.

力度表示音量:pp(极弱)、p(弱)、mp(中弱)、mf(中强)、f(强)、ff(极强)。

7. Structural Forms |

Common forms in the Edexcel specification include binary (AB), ternary (ABA, often with a contrasting B section), rondo (ABACA, etc., with a recurring A section), and theme and variations (A, A1, A2, A3…). Sonata form is a dramatic large-scale structure built on exposition (two contrasting themes in different keys), development (themes are fragmented and explored) and recapitulation (both themes return in the tonic key), occasionally with a coda. Vocal forms include strophic (same music for each verse), through-composed (no large repetition, music follows the text), and da capo aria (ABA’ with ornamented return). 12-bar blues uses a fixed I–IV–I–V–I harmonic pattern over 12 bars. In popular music, a typical structure is intro–verse–chorus–verse–chorus–bridge–chorus–outro, often with an AABA 32-bar form in earlier styles. Linking structure to expressive intention is essential for high marks.

I–IV–I–V–I 的固定和声模式反复 12 小节。

8. Sonority & Timbre |

Sonority refers to the quality of sound produced by an instrument or voice. String techniques include arco (bowed), pizzicato (plucked), tremolo (rapid up-and-down bowing), harmonics (light touch to produce overtone), sul ponticello (bowing near the bridge for a glassy sound) and sul tasto (over the fingerboard for a soft sound). Woodwinds can use flutter-tonguing (rolled ‘r’ while blowing). Brass players use mutes (con sordino) for a veiled, nasal tone, and senza sordino to remove it. Vocal sonority encompasses falsetto (male high register beyond modal voice), vibrato (subtle pitch oscillation) and Sprechstimme (speech-song, halfway between speaking and singing). Percussion timbre includes roll on timpani, rim shot on snare. Exam listening requires precise recognition of these techniques.

9. Ornamentation |

Ornaments embellish a melody and are especially important in Baroque and Classical set works. A trill is a rapid alternation between the written note and the note above, often ending with a turn. An upper mordent is a single quick alternation: main note–upper note–main note; a lower mordent goes one semitone or tone down. A turn goes through the note above, main note, note below, main note. An appoggiatura is a stressed, dissonant leaning note that takes half the value of the main note and resolves by step; pronounce it ‘ap-pog-ia-tura’ – the ‘pog’ leans. An acciaccatura is a crushed, very short grace note played almost simultaneously with the main note. Think ‘acciaccatura’ has a ‘cat’ – a quick scratch before the note.

10. Vocal & Instrumental Techniques |

Voice types are categorised by range: soprano, mezzo-soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, bass. Coloratura refers to elaborate, rapid ornamentation displayed by a high soprano. Bel canto is a singing style with smooth phrasing, beautiful tone and emphasis on technique. Portamento is a continuous slide between two pitches, while glissando is a rapid sliding scale. Falsetto is used by male singers to reach notes above their modal range. For strings, double-stopping means playing two strings together, and triple-stopping is three. Con sordino (with mute) applies to strings and brass. Harmonics on string and on harp create an ethereal sound. Scat singing in jazz uses nonsense syllables to improvise. These terms often appear in dictation and essay questions.

11. Expressive Markings & Mood |

Beyond tempo and dynamics, Italian and German expressive markings pinpoint mood. Dolce means sweetly; cantabile means in a singing style; agitato means agitated; animato means animated, lively; maestoso is majestic; rubato literally ‘robbed time’, where the performer flexibly stretches and compresses beats for expression. Other directions: più mosso (faster, more movement), meno mosso (slower), a tempo (return to the original speed), pesante (heavy), leggiero (lightly), con anima (with soul). In Romantic and 20th-century scores you may see German terms like ‘mit Empfindung’ (with feeling), ‘traurig’ (sad), ‘sehr lebhaft’ (very lively). Associate each with a physical gesture: rubato can be remembered as ‘rubber time’, dolce as ‘dolce = delicious smoothness’.

其他指示:più mosso(更快,更多运动)、meno mosso(更慢)、a tempo(回原速)、pesante(沉重)、leggiero(轻盈)、con anima(有灵魂地)。
