1. Overview of the CAIE Music A Level (9483) | CAIE A Level

The Cambridge International A Level Music syllabus (9483) is designed to develop a holistic musicianship through three interconnected components: Listening and Appraising, Performing, and Composing. The course encourages critical listening, analytical writing, practical performance, and creative composition, preparing students for further study or careers in music. The qualification is typically taken over two years in Year 12 and Year 13, with all components assessed at the end of the course.

The syllabus code 9483 represents the full A Level qualification. There is no separate AS-only certification for the later units; learners may choose to take the AS Level (9483) which consists of the same components but with reduced content and weighting, but for Year 13, the focus is on the complete A Level. All three components contribute to the final grade, and they are assessed externally (Component 1) or through a combination of external moderation and internal assessment (Components 2 and 3).

2. Component 1: Listening and Appraising |

Component 1 is a 2-hour-30-minute written examination worth 40% of the A Level. It is divided into two sections: Section A – Aural Analysis, and Section B – Contextual Understanding. Candidates must answer all questions in Section A and two essay questions in Section B, based on their chosen Area of Study.

Section A presents two extracts of unfamiliar music. Candidates must identify musical features, describe textures, harmonic progressions, and contextual clues, demonstrating their aural skills. The extracts are drawn from Areas of Study B (Popular Music), C (World Music), and D (Jazz), ensuring exposure to a broad range of styles.

这些摘录选自学习领域 B(流行音乐)、C(世界音乐)和 D(爵士乐),确保学生接触广泛风格。

Section B requires two essay responses on the set works from one chosen Area of Study (A1, A2, B, C, or D). The essays assess knowledge of musical elements, historical and cultural context, and the ability to construct well-structured arguments supported by musical evidence.

3. Aural Analysis: Unfamiliar Music |

In the aural analysis section, students must listen actively to extracts and answer structured questions. Typical tasks include recognising instruments, commenting on rhythm, metre, tonality, harmony, and structure, and identifying stylistic features. The questions are designed to test both immediate aural perception and deeper analytical interpretation.

Preparation for this section involves regularly listening to a wide range of music from Popular, World, and Jazz traditions, practising with past papers, and learning to transcribe short melodic or rhythmic fragments. Students should also develop a vocabulary of musical terminology to describe what they hear accurately.

4. Set Works and Contextual Understanding |

For Component 1 Section B, students select one of five possible areas: A1 – Western Art Music (1650–1900), A2 – Western Art Music (20th century), B – Popular Music, C – World Music, or D – Jazz. Each area has a set of prescribed works that candidates must study in depth. They are expected to understand the works’ musical structures, historical contexts, and stylistic features, and to compare them where appropriate.

For example, Area A1 includes works by Vivaldi, Mozart, and Brahms; Area A2 features Debussy, Stravinsky, and Copland; Area B covers artists such as The Beatles and Bob Dylan; Area C explores traditional music from Africa and Latin America; Area D examines key recordings by artists like Miles Davis and Duke Ellington. Each set work list is carefully curated to balance breadth and depth.

5. Choosing Your Area of Study |

The choice of Area of Study determines the set works for the essay section, but it also influences which genres you will focus on most strongly in your listening practice. It is wise to select an area that aligns with your interests and existing knowledge, but also to consider the availability of resources and teacher expertise. A1 and A2 are often chosen by those with a background in classical music, while B, C, and D appeal to students with interests in contemporary, global, or jazz styles.

Furthermore, the choice does not restrict the aural analysis extracts, as Section A always draws from B, C, D. Therefore, even if you choose A1 or A2 for Section B, you still need to be familiar with popular, world, and jazz idioms for the aural part.

6. Component 2: Performing |

Component 2 assesses performance skills through a recital lasting between 10 and 15 minutes. Learners perform one or more pieces as a soloist and/or as part of an ensemble. The performance can be on any instrument or voice, and the repertoire should demonstrate a range of technical and expressive demands appropriate to A Level standard.

The recital is internally assessed by the centre and externally
