1. The Weimar Republic: Origins and Crisis (1918–1923) |

The Weimar Republic was born out of military defeat and revolution. In November 1918, naval mutinies in Kiel sparked uprisings, leading to the abdication of Kaiser Wilhelm II. The Social Democrat Friedrich Ebert became Chancellor and arranged elections for a National Assembly, which met in Weimar in 1919 due to unrest in Berlin.

The new constitution was one of the most democratic in the world, featuring universal suffrage, proportional representation, and a Bill of Rights. However, it had fatal weaknesses: Article 48 allowed the President to rule by decree in an emergency, and proportional representation led to many small parties and unstable coalition governments.

The Treaty of Versailles (1919) placed heavy burdens on the young republic: loss of all colonies, severe military restrictions, a war guilt clause (Article 231), and a huge reparations bill. Many Germans blamed the new government for the ‘Dolchstosslegende’ (stab-in-the-back myth), claiming the army had not been defeated in the field.

The early years saw serious threats from both left and right. In January 1919, the Spartacist rising (Communist) was crushed by the Freikorps, with the murder of leaders Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht. In March 1920, the right-wing Kapp Putsch tried to overthrow the government but failed due to a general strike. Both events revealed the fragile base of the republic.

The crisis of 1923 was a low point. After Germany defaulted on reparations, French and Belgian troops occupied the industrial Ruhr area. The government’s policy of passive resistance and the printing of money led to hyperinflation, wiping out savings. Amid this chaos, Hitler’s Munich Putsch failed, but he gained national attention and later wrote Mein Kampf in prison.

2. The ‘Golden Years’ of Weimar (1924–1929) |

Under Chancellor and Foreign Minister Gustav Stresemann, Germany experienced a period of relative stability. The introduction of the Rentenmark ended hyperinflation, and the Dawes Plan (1924) provided US loans, enabling economic recovery and a new reparations schedule. Industrial output rose and unemployment fell.

Stresemann pursued a policy of fulfilment, aiming to regain international trust. The Locarno Treaties (1925) guaranteed Germany’s western borders, and in 1926 Germany joined the League of Nations. However, the Young Plan (1929) further eased reparations, but nationalists opposed it fiercely, feeling it perpetuated the Treaty of Versailles.

Culturally, this era saw a burst of creativity. Berlin became a centre for modern art, cinema, theatre, and the Bauhaus movement. Yet, conservative and right-wing circles condemned this as ‘cultural Bolshevism’. Politically, the Social Democrats (SPD) dominated coalitions, but underlying tensions remained, and agricultural depression persisted in rural areas.

3. The Rise of the Nazi Party (1920–1933) |

The German Workers’ Party (DAP), founded in 1919, was renamed the NSDAP after Hitler joined and became its leader. The 25-Point Programme of 1920 mixed nationalist, anti-Semitic, and socialist ideas. The SA (Sturmabteilung) was formed to intimidate opponents and protect meetings.

After the failed Munich Putsch (1923), Hitler decided to seek power through legal means. While imprisoned, he wrote Mein Kampf, outlining his ideology of Lebensraum and racial hierarchy. During the stable Stresemann period, Nazi support collapsed: in 1928, they won only 2.6% of the vote.

The Great Depression transformed Nazi fortunes. After the Wall Street Crash (1929), US loans were recalled, German exports collapsed, and unemployment soared to over six million. In the 1930 election, the NSDAP won 18.3% of the vote, becoming the second-largest party. By July 1932, they were the largest party with 37.3%. Nazi propaganda tapped into fears of Communism and promised national rebirth.

Political intrigue brought Hitler to power. In a series of backroom deals involving Hindenburg, von Papen, and von Schleicher, Hitler was appointed Chancellor on 30 January 1933, with Papen as Vice-Chancellor. The conservative elites mistakenly believed they could control Hitler and use him to crush the left.

4. Hitler’s Appointment as Chancellor (1933) |

The appointment of Hitler on 30 January 1933 marked the beginning of the end for Weimar democracy. Quickly, the Nazis used the Reichstag Fire (27 February 1933) – blamed on a Dutch Communist – to push through the ‘Decree for the Protection of People and State’, which suspended civil liberties and allowed the arrest of political opponents.

Despite widespread intimidation, the NSDAP won only 44% of the vote in the 5 March 1933 election. With the support of the DNVP (German National People’s Party), they secured a working majority. The Enabling Act, passed on 23 March 1933, gave Hitler dictatorial powers for four years. It required a two-thirds majority, achieved by banning Communist deputies and intimidating the Social Democrats and Centre Party.
