Voice leading governs the horizontal motion of individual lines within a chordal texture. The core principles, distilled from common-practice tonality, are as follows. When adjacent chords share one or more common tones, retain those tones in the same voice; remaining voices should move to the nearest available chord tones by step or, failing that, by the smallest possible leap. Avoid parallel perfect fifths and octaves between any pair of voices — these destroy contrapuntal independence. Avoid direct (hidden) fifths and octaves in outer voices when the soprano leaps: if the soprano and bass approach a perfect fifth or octave by similar motion and the soprano moves by leap, the progression is stylistically faulty. Leading tones (the seventh degree of the scale) must resolve upward by step to the tonic when they appear in an outer voice; when they occur in an inner voice, a downward resolution to the fifth of the tonic chord is permissible if the voice-leading demands it. The seventh of any seventh chord must resolve downward by step. In four-part chorale-style writing (a staple of the CIE examination), the spacing between adjacent upper voices (soprano–alto, alto–tenor) should not exceed an octave, while the bass may lie more than an octave below the tenor.

The pivot is analysed with dual Roman numerals — one in the source key and one in the destination key — typically placed at the point where the harmonic function shifts. For instance, in a modulation from C major to G major, the chord E minor (iii in C, vi in G) can serve as the pivot. Direct (phrase) modulation juxtaposes two keys without a pivot, often at a phrase boundary, creating an abrupt tonal shift that composers such as Schubert exploit for dramatic contrast. Chromatic modulation uses an altered chord — frequently a diminished seventh or an augmented sixth — to pivot enharmonically into a distantly related key. The Neapolitan sixth (♭II⁶, a major triad built on the lowered second degree in first inversion) and the augmented sixth chords (Italian, French, German) function as powerful predominant modulatory agents, intensifying the drive toward the dominant of the new key. CIE candidates must be able to locate and label pivot chords within score extracts, describe the modulatory route, and relate the key change to the phrase structure and expressive design of the work.

Sonata form is not a rigid mould but a dramatic narrative framework that organises musical material through the dialectic of key areas. Its tripartite architecture — Exposition, Development, Recapitulation — follows a precise tonal trajectory. The Exposition presents two contrasting thematic groups: the first subject in the tonic key and the second subject in a complementary key (the dominant for major-key movements; the relative major or, more rarely, the minor dominant for minor-key movements). A transitional bridge modulates between them, and a codetta closes the exposition, often with a repeat sign. The Development section explores remote keys and fragments, transforms, and recombines earlier motives, building harmonic tension through sequential modulation and avoiding sustained tonic stability. The Recapitulation restores tonal unity by restating all thematic material in the tonic key; the bridge is recomposed so as not to modulate away from the tonic, and the second subject now appears transposed to the tonic. An optional Coda may follow, consolidating the tonic and providing rhetorical closure. CIE expects you to identify these structural landmarks in score extracts, label the key of each section, and discuss how the composer manipulates the formal conventions for expressive effect — for example, through a false recapitulation (Haydn), a reversed recapitulation (Mozart), or the integration of development within the coda (Beethoven).
