📚 IGCSE CCEA Accounting: Essay Writing Framework and Sample Essay | IGCSE CCEA

Writing an effective accounting essay in the CCEA IGCSE examination can significantly boost your overall grade. Unlike short-answer questions that test recall, essays require you to demonstrate depth of understanding, logical structure, and evaluative skills. This article provides a practical framework for tackling CCEA Accounting essay questions, followed by a full annotated sample essay.

CCEA IGCSE Accounting papers include extended response questions that require you to write structured essays. These essays test not only your knowledge of accounting principles but also your ability to apply, analyse and evaluate.

CCEA IGCSE

The essay questions often begin with command words such as ‘Discuss’, ‘Explain’, ‘Evaluate’ or ‘Compare’. Understanding what each command word demands is the first step to writing a high-scoring answer.

  • Discuss – Explore different aspects of a topic and present arguments for and against.
  • Explain – Give detailed reasons for how or why something happens, often with examples. /
  • Evaluate – Weigh up evidence and make a balanced judgement about importance or impact. /
  • Compare – Identify similarities and differences between two or more concepts. /

2. Decoding the Question |

Before you begin writing, spend two to three minutes breaking down the question. Underline the command word, the key accounting terms, and any limiting phrases such as ‘for a sole trader’ or ‘in the context of a manufacturing business’.

A common mistake is writing everything you know about a topic without directly addressing the question. If the question asks you to evaluate, you must provide a reasoned conclusion, not just a list of facts.

Identify the specific accounting concepts or standards the question touches on, such as prudence, accruals, consistency, or IAS 2. This ensures your answer stays focused on the syllabus requirements.

3. Structuring Your Answer |

A well-organised essay follows a clear Introduction, Body and Conclusion pattern. The CCEA examiner expects a logical flow of ideas, with each paragraph making one distinct point.

Plan your answer on a spare page. Jot down three to five main points for the body paragraphs. For an evaluation question, list at least one argument for and one against, plus your final judgement.

Allocate your time wisely. If a question carries 10 marks, you might spend about 15 minutes on it. Reserve 2 minutes for planning, 10 minutes for writing and 3 minutes for reviewing.

4. Introduction: Setting the Context |

Your introduction should briefly define the key terms in the question and state the direction of your essay. Do not ramble; two or three sentences are often enough.

For example, if the question is about capital and revenue expenditure, you might begin: ‘Capital expenditure is spending on non-current assets that benefit the business for more than one accounting period, while revenue expenditure covers day-to-day running costs. Correct classification is essential because it directly affects the calculation of profit and the value of assets in the statement of financial position.’

This approach immediately shows the examiner that you understand the topic and have a clear line of argument.

5. Main Body: Developing Arguments |

Each body paragraph should start with a topic sentence that introduces the point. Follow it with an explanation and, if possible, an applied example from the accounting world.

Use connecting phrases to guide the reader: ‘Furthermore’, ‘In addition’, ‘On the other hand’, ‘However’. This creates cohesion and demonstrates evaluative thinking.

When the question requires evaluation, dedicate at least one paragraph to a counter-argument. For instance, while discussing the importance of the prudence concept, acknowledge that excessive prudence might understate profits and mislead stakeholders.

Avoid vague statements. Instead of writing ‘It affects the accounts’, specify: ‘If a revenue expense is wrongly classified as capital expenditure, profit will be overstated and the statement of financial position will show inflated non-current assets.’

6. Using Accounting Terminology Accurately |

CCEA examiners award marks for precise application of technical language. Use terms such as ‘depreciation’, ‘accrual’, ‘prepayment’, ‘irrecoverable debt’ and ‘provision’ correctly and in context.

Avoid informal language. Instead of ‘money coming in’, write ‘cash inflow from operating activities’. Instead of ‘owing money’, use ‘trade payables’ or ‘current liabilities’.

When introducing a term, consider offering a brief definition, especially if it is central to the question. For example: ‘The accruals concept states that income and expenses should be recorded in the period they relate to, not when cash is received or paid.’

7. Incorporating Examples and Figures |

Well-chosen examples add depth to your essay. Use simple numeric illustrations or real-world business scenarios to support your arguments.

For instance, when explaining the difference between gross profit and net profit, show a mini calculation: ‘If a business has sales revenue of £50,000 and cost of sales of £30,000, gross profit is £20,000. After deducting operating expenses of £8,000, the net profit becomes £12,000.’

However, do not turn your essay into a full set of ledger accounts. The numbers should serve the explanation, not replace it.

8. Evaluation and Balanced Viewpoint |

High-scoring essays recognise that accounting is rarely black and white. Show the examiner you can see both the advantages and the limitations of a concept or method.

For example, when discussing the historical cost convention, point out that while it is objective and verifiable, it may not reflect current market values, particularly during inflation.

Use phrases like ‘A key benefit is…’, ‘However, a limitation is…’, ‘This can be partly addressed by…’. These demonstrate higher-order thinking and can push your mark into the top band.

9. Conclusion: Summarising and Concluding |

Your conclusion should briefly summarise the main arguments and deliver a clear final judgement if the question required evaluation. Never introduce new information at this stage.

A strong conclusion might begin: ‘In conclusion, while the going concern assumption is fundamental to the preparation of financial statements, its validity must be continually assessed through cash flow forecasts and order books.’

Aim for two or three crisp sentences. The conclusion should leave the examiner with a sense of closure and confidence in your analytical ability.

10. Time Management in the Exam |

Many CCEA candidates lose marks because they spend too long on early questions and rush the essay. Practise writing essays under timed conditions at home to build speed and confidence.

Wear a watch or use the exam hall clock. Allocate a specific time to each question based on the marks. For a 20-mark essay, you should not exceed 25 minutes.

If you find yourself running out of time, switch to note-form bullet points that still show understanding. While less ideal than prose, this can salvage marks.

11. Sample Essay with Commentary |

Sample Question: Distinguish between capital expenditure and revenue expenditure, and explain the importance of correct classification for the financial statements of a sole trader. (15 marks)

Below is a full-mark model answer. The commentary highlights how the framework is applied.

Student Essay /

Capital expenditure is the money spent on acquiring, improving or extending non-current assets that will be used in the business for more than one accounting period. Examples include purchasing machinery, buildings and vehicles. Revenue expenditure, on the other hand, relates to the day-to-day running costs of the business, such as rent, wages, repairs, and purchases of inventory. These costs are used up within the current accounting period.

The introduction immediately defines both terms and offers concise examples. This satisfies the ‘Distinguish’ command word right at the start.

The accounting treatment of the two types of expenditure is fundamentally different. Capital expenditure is recorded as a non-current asset in the statement of financial position. Over time, a portion of its cost is charged as depreciation in the income statement to match the expense against the revenue it generates, in line with the accruals concept. Revenue expenditure, however, is charged in full to the income statement in the period it is incurred.

This paragraph explains the ‘accounting treatment’ using accurate terminology and links the treatment to the accruals concept.

The importance of correct classification cannot be overstated. If a revenue expenditure item, such as an annual repair costing £5,000, is wrongly classified as capital expenditure, the profit for the year will be overstated by £5,000. This is because the repair cost should have been written off against profit, but it has instead been added to non-current assets. Consequently, the statement of financial position will show a higher value for non-current assets and a higher capital balance, which can mislead investors and lenders.

A specific numeric example makes the consequence tangible for the reader. The candidate connects the misclassification to the impact on both the income statement and the statement of financial position.

Conversely, if a capital expenditure item, such as a new delivery van costing £20,000, is treated as revenue expenditure, the profit will be understated by £20,000 in the year of purchase. Over the following years, the profit will be overstated because no depreciation is charged on the van. Both scenarios distort the true financial performance and position of the business, breaching the fundamental qualitative characteristic of faithful representation.

The essay now presents a balanced view by discussing the opposite error. The reference to ‘faithful representation’ shows awareness of the IFRS conceptual framework, though at a level appropriate for IGCSE.

In conclusion, distinguishing between capital and revenue expenditure is a cornerstone of accurate accounting. It ensures that profits are neither overstated nor understated and that the statement of financial position presents a true and fair view. Accountants must carefully examine the nature of each transaction, considering both its economic effect and the principle of materiality, in order to maintain the integrity of the financial statements.

The conclusion summarises the main argument and adds a final evaluative nuance by mentioning materiality. It does not introduce any new topic but reinforces the theme.

12. Final Tips for Success |
