1. The Elements of Music |

The building blocks of all musical analysis are the elements: melody, harmony, rhythm, texture, structure, dynamics, tempo, timbre and articulation. When describing any piece, identifying what happens in each element is crucial. For instance, a melody can move by step (conjunct) or leap (disjunct), and its range may be narrow or wide.

Harmony refers to the chords that support the melody, and these are often built around primary triads (I, IV, V). Cadences mark the ends of phrases: perfect (V–I) sounds complete, while imperfect (I–V or IV–V) leaves the music open. A plagal cadence (IV–I) often sounds like an “Amen”, and an interrupted cadence (V–vi) creates a surprise.

Texture describes how many layers of sound are heard and how they relate. Monophonic texture is a single unaccompanied melody, homophonic texture features melody with chordal accompaniment, and polyphonic texture weaves together two or more independent melodic lines. Thick and thin textures can also be created by the number of instruments or voices.

Structure gives music its shape. Common forms include binary (AB), ternary (ABA), rondo (ABACA), theme and variations, and strophic form (same music for each verse). Being able to map the sections of a piece using letters is a fundamental listening skill.

2. Instruments of the Orchestra and World Ensembles |

The Western orchestra is divided into four families: strings, woodwind, brass and percussion. Strings include violin, viola, cello and double bass, and can be played arco (with the bow) or pizzicato (plucked). Woodwind instruments such as flute, clarinet, oboe and bassoon produce sound by blowing across an edge or through a reed. Brass instruments (trumpet, French horn, trombone, tuba) use lip vibration, and mutes can alter their tone colour.

World music is a rich area of the syllabus. You need to recognise instruments and characteristics from traditions such as African drumming (djembe, talking drum, cyclic rhythms, call and response), Indian classical music (sitar, tabla, drone, raga, tala), Latin American ensembles (panpipes, charango, syncopated rhythms), and Chinese music (erhu, pipa, pentatonic scales). Focus on the role of improvisation, oral tradition, and the relationship between music and context.

3. Baroque Period (c.1600–1750) |

The Baroque era is dominated by composers such as Bach, Handel and Vivaldi. Key features include a continuous bass line (basso continuo) played by harpsichord and cello, terraced dynamics, and an ornate, highly decorated melody. The modern major/minor tonal system was established during this period.

Common structures include the concerto grosso, where a small group of soloists (concertino) contrasts with the full orchestra (ripieno), the solo concerto, the dance suite (allemande, courante, sarabande, gigue), and contrapuntal forms such as the Fugue. A fugue is built on a subject that is imitated by different voices, creating a dense polyphonic texture.

4. Classical Period (c.1750–1820) |

The Classical style, exemplified by Haydn, Mozart and early Beethoven, values clarity, balance and elegant melody. The harpsichord was replaced by the piano, allowing for gradual dynamic changes (crescendo and diminuendo). The orchestra expanded, but textures were generally lighter and homophonic, with a clear melody and accompaniment.

The most important formal development was sonata form, used in first movements of symphonies, sonatas and string quartets. Sonata form has three main sections: Exposition (first and second subjects in different keys), Development (themes are fragmented and modulated), and Recapitulation (both subjects return in the tonic key). Other structures include minuet and trio, rondo, and theme and variations.

5. Romantic Period (c.1820–1900) |

The Romantic era saw composers such as Chopin, Schumann, Brahms, Tchaikovsky and Wagner focusing on expressing emotion and storytelling. The orchestra grew enormously, and composers used chromatic harmony, wider ranges of dynamics and tempo, and rich, expansive melodies. Nationalism led many composers to incorporate folk tunes and dances from their home countries.

The character piece for piano (e.g. nocturne, prelude, etude) became popular, as did program music – instrumental music that tells a story or paints a picture, such as the symphonic poem. The art song (Lied) combined voice and piano to interpret poetry, with the piano playing an equally expressive role.

6. Understanding the Set Works |

The CIE syllabus includes set works that you must study in depth. While specific compositions can change, the approach remains consistent: know the composer, historical context, structure, use of the elements, and any distinct features. You should be able to follow a score and identify themes and key moments aurally.

For example, when studying a concerto, identify the solo entry, cadenza, and the relationship between soloist and orchestra. In a song, examine the word setting (syllabic or melismatic), the mood of the accompaniment, and any use of word painting. Build up a set of flashcards or a mind map for each work detailing these points.

7. Composition and Arrangement Techniques |

Your composition coursework requires you to create original music, while the arranging task asks you to rework existing material. A strong piece tends to have a clear melodic idea that can be developed through repetition, sequence, inversion, augmentation or fragmentation. Think about phrase lengths and create a balanced, question-and-answer structure.

Harmonically, use primary chords as a foundation, then add secondary chords, seventh chords and chromatic alterations for colour. Plan your structure with clear sections and contrasting keys. In arrangements, you might change the style, time signature, or instrumental forces while preserving the essence of the original material. Effective use of texture changes – such as dropping to a solo line, then building to a full ensemble – adds interest.

8. Performance Skills and Practice Strategies |

The solo and ensemble performance components require careful preparation. Choose repertoire that showcases your strengths, suits your current technical level, and allows you to demonstrate musical expression. Pay close attention to accuracy of pitch and rhythm, but also to phrasing, dynamics, articulation and tonal quality.

Practise slowly with a metronome to build security, then gradually increase tempo. Record yourself regularly and listen critically. Identify problem spots and isolate them rather than always playing from start to finish. For ensemble performance, listen to the other parts, maintain eye contact, and breathe together for entries. Your overall musical communication will be assessed alongside technical accuracy.

9. Melody and Decoration |

Melody can move by step, leap or repetition. Its contour can ascend, descend or be arched. Phrasing marks are shown by slurs, and notes can be decorated with ornaments such as trills, mordents, appoggiaturas, acciaccaturas and turns. In Baroque and Classical music, ornaments are not just decoration but essential to style.

Other melodic devices include the passing note (stepwise between chord tones), auxiliary note (stepwise away and back), and pedal note (a sustained or repeated pitch over which harmonies change). Syllabic word setting uses one note per syllable, while melismatic setting uses many notes for a single syllable, often for emotional emphasis.

10. Rhythm and Metre |

Metre is the regular pulse grouping, indicated by time signatures such as 2/4 (duple), 3/4 (triple), 4/4 (quadruple) and 6/8 (compound duple). Syncopation occurs when accents fall on weak beats or between beats, creating rhythmic tension and forward drive. Dotted rhythms (dotted quaver–semiquaver) and triplets against duplets are common rhythmic patterns you should recognise aurally and on the page.

Tempo markings are usually in Italian: largo (very slow), adagio (slow), andante (walking pace), moderato (moderate), allegro (fast), presto (very fast). Terms like ritardando (gradually slowing) and accelerando (gradually speeding up) describe changes in tempo. Hemiola is a shift in the perceived grouping, common in Baroque music, where two bars of 3/4 are felt as three bars of 2/4.

速度标记通常用意大利语:largo(极慢)、adagio(慢)、andante(行板)、moderato(中速)、allegro(快板)、presto(急板)。术语如 ritardando(渐慢)和 accelerando(渐快)描述速度变化。

11. Listening Exam Techniques |

The listening paper tests your ability to describe what you hear using accurate musical vocabulary. Unseen excerpts can be from any period or world tradition. When the music starts, jot down immediate observations about metre, tempo, instrumentation and mood. Use the element headings as a checklist, but avoid vacuous statements like “it sounds nice”. Instead, say “the ascending legato phrase on the flute leads to a perfect cadence”.

Be prepared to identify the period and suggest a likely composer based on stylistic clues. Baroque features include harpsichord and contrapuntal texture; Classical suggests clear phrases and homophonic texture; Romantic points to chromatic harmonies and large forces. For world music, listen for characteristic instruments and rhythmic patterns. Practise with past papers and mark schemes to learn the level of detail required.

12. Broader Musical Understanding: Context, Genre and Style |

Beyond the notes, examiners look for your ability to place music in its cultural and historical context. Understand the difference between genres such as symphony, opera, oratorio, ensemble folk music, and musical theatre. Recognise the function of music: is it for dance, worship, courtly entertainment, or a concert hall?

Be aware of stylistic fusions, where different traditions combine, and how 20th-century developments such as impressionism, serialism, minimalism, and jazz have influenced modern music. Listening widely – from medieval chant to contemporary film scores – will help you make connections and trust your aural instincts on the exam day.
