1. Todorov’s Narrative Equilibrium Formula |

Tzvetan Todorov proposed that all narratives follow a five-stage structure. A state of equilibrium is disrupted, leading to recognition of the disruption, an attempt to repair the damage, and finally a new equilibrium that is never quite the same as the original.

Equilibrium → Disruption → Recognition → Attempt to Repair → New Equilibrium

This formula can be applied to almost any film, TV drama or news story. For example, in a crime drama, the peaceful community (equilibrium) is shattered by a murder (disruption). The detective recognises the crime, investigates (attempt to repair) and solves the case, restoring order (new equilibrium) but with permanent changes to character relationships.

2. Propp’s Character Archetypes Formula |

Vladimir Propp analysed Russian folk tales and identified seven recurring character types, or ‘spheres of action’. Each character performs a specific narrative function, and a single character can sometimes fulfil more than one role.

Narrative Function = Hero + Villain + Dispatcher + Donor + Helper + Princess + False Hero

The Hero is the protagonist who seeks something; the Villain opposes the hero; the Dispatcher sends the hero on the quest; the Donor provides a magical object; the Helper aids the hero; the Princess is the reward; and the False Hero tries to steal the credit. Recognising these archetypes helps deconstruct character motivation in texts from Star Wars to Harry Potter.

3. Barthes’ Semiotic Formula |

Roland Barthes introduced a systematic way to analyse media texts through signs. A sign is made up of the physical form (signifier) and the mental concept it represents (signified). He also distinguished between denotation (literal meaning) and connotation (associated cultural meaning), which can build up into a myth.

Sign = Signifier + Signified

Denotation → Connotation → Myth

A photograph of a red rose has rose as signifier, and the concept of a flower as signified at the denotative level. Connotatively, it suggests romance or passion, and over time the association of red roses with love has become a cultural myth. Applying this formula reveals the hidden ideological messages in advertising, news and film.

4. Levi-Strauss’ Binary Opposition Principle |

Claude Levi-Strauss argued that meaning in narratives is constructed through pairs of opposing concepts. Conflict between binaries such as good and evil, nature and technology, or order and chaos drives the story forward and reflects the values of the culture that produced it.

Meaning = Binary Opposition (Concept A vs Concept B)

For instance, superhero films rely on the binary hero vs villain, often mapped onto order vs chaos. In Westerns, civilisation vs wilderness structures the entire genre. Media students can use this principle to uncover the ideological tensions within a text, asking which side of the binary is privileged and why.

5. Neale’s Genre Formula |

Steve Neale’s theory of genre centres on the interplay between repetition and difference. Genres survive because audiences enjoy recognising familiar conventions, but they also crave novelty. Thus, every genre text contains a combination of expected elements and new variations.

Genre = Repetition + Difference

Repetition provides pleasure through the recognition of iconography, narrative patterns and character types. Difference prevents the genre from becoming stale. For example, a horror film delivers the expected jump scares and final girl, but might subvert the monster’s origin. This formula explains genre evolution and hybridisation, such as the rise of the romantic comedy-action hybrid.

6. Hall’s Encoding/Decoding Model |

Stuart Hall’s model examines how media producers encode a preferred meaning into a text, but audiences may not decode it as intended. He identified three reading positions: the dominant (or preferred) reading, the negotiated reading, and the oppositional reading.

Encoding (Preferred Meaning) → Text → Decoding: Dominant / Negotiated / Oppositional

A news broadcast may encode a government policy as beneficial. Audiences who accept this adopt the dominant position. Those who generally agree but have personal reservations take a negotiated position. Those who reject the message entirely, perhaps due to political beliefs, read oppositionally. This model shifts power to the audience and is essential for analysing news, advertising and representation.

7. Uses and Gratifications Formula |

Unlike theories that assume audiences are passive, the Uses and Gratifications model sees them as active selectors of media to fulfil specific needs. According to Blumler and Katz, audiences seek media for information, personal identity, social interaction and entertainment, often remembered as the PIES model.

Audience Need = Information + Personal Identity + Social Interaction + Entertainment → Media Selection

A teenager might watch a YouTube tutorial for information, follow a fashion influencer to reinforce personal identity, discuss a TV series with friends for social interaction, and scroll TikTok for entertainment. This formula can be used to explain media choice and the success of platforms that satisfy multiple needs simultaneously, like Instagram combining identity, interaction and entertainment.

8. Gerbner’s Cultivation Theorem |

George Gerbner’s cultivation theory suggests that long-term exposure to media, particularly television, gradually shapes viewers’ perceptions of social reality. Heavy viewers are more likely to believe the world is as it is portrayed on screen, a phenomenon known as ‘mean world syndrome’.

Heavy TV Exposure → Mainstreaming + Resonance → Cultivated Perception (Mean World Syndrome)

Mainstreaming occurs when diverse viewers converge toward a shared, television-influenced worldview. Resonance amplifies the effect when the viewer’s real-life experiences match the TV message. For example, heavy consumers of crime dramas overestimate real-world violence and distrust strangers. This theorem helps media students evaluate the long-term social impact of media content on audiences.

9. Two-Step Flow Model |

Developed by Katz and Lazarsfeld, the two-step flow model challenges the hypodermic needle notion of direct media effects. It proposes that media messages first reach opinion leaders, who are influential individuals, and then these opinion leaders pass on their interpretations to less active members of their social circles.

Mass Media → Opinion Leaders → Social Networks → Wider Audience

This model highlights the importance of personal influence over direct media influence. On social media today, an ordinary user with a large following acts as an opinion leader who filters news or product reviews for their followers. For IGCSE analysis, apply this formula when discussing how campaigns spread or how politicians use influencers to reach specific demographics.

10. Representation Formula: Stereotype Construction |

Representation is the process by which media re-present the world. While not always negative, stereotypes reduce complex groups to a few exaggerated traits. The construction of a stereotype can be expressed as a process of simplification, exaggeration and generalisation, often used to quickly communicate ideas to audiences.

Stereotype = Simplify + Exaggerate + Generalise (Repeated over time)

Media producers may select a few physical or behavioural traits, magnify them, and then apply them to an entire group. For example, a sitcom might depict a teenager as always glued to their phone, lazy and disrespectful — simplifying and exaggerating a generation. Stereotypes can be analysed by asking: who constructs them, for whose benefit, and what harm they might cause. Countertypes deliberately challenge these formulas.

11. Media Ownership Concentration Formula |

Media industries are increasingly dominated by a small number of large conglomerates. Concentration of ownership can be described through vertical integration (controlling production, distribution and exhibition) and horizontal integration (owning multiple companies at the same level). This leads to synergy and can limit diversity.

Concentration = Vertical Integration + Horizontal Integration → Synergy & Reduced Plurality

A conglomerate like Disney owns film studios, streaming platforms, and theme parks (vertical), as well as multiple studios and TV channels (horizontal), allowing it to cross-promote a franchise across all outlets. For an IGCSE exam, you can use this formula to discuss how ownership shapes the content we consume, the risks to independent media, and the impact on audience choice.

In the UK, the Office of Communications (Ofcom) regulates television, radio and video-on-demand services. Its Broadcasting Code sets rules to protect audiences, particularly the under-18s, from harmful or offensive material, and to ensure impartiality and accuracy in news. The regulatory function can be summarised as a protective filter.

Regulation = Ofcom Code (Protection of Under-18s + Harm & Offence + Impartiality + Accuracy + Privacy) → Responsible Broadcasting

If a TV show airs before the 9pm watershed, it must comply with stricter rules on language and sexual content to protect children. News must present different viewpoints impartially. When analysing a media institution, consider whether its output successfully operates within this regulatory formula, and what happens when the formula is breached — sanctions can include fines or licence revocation.
