1. Materials and Their Properties |

Ferrous metal – A metal that contains iron. The term comes from ‘ferrum’, the Latin word for iron. Most ferrous metals are magnetic and can rust. Think: ferrous contains Fe (the chemical symbol for iron).

Non-ferrous metal – A metal that does not contain iron. Examples include aluminium, copper and zinc. They do not rust and are often non-magnetic. Remember: non-ferrous means no Fe.

Alloy – A mixture of two or more elements, at least one of which is a metal, designed to improve properties. For instance, steel is an alloy of iron and carbon. Think of alloy as ‘allied’ metals working together.

Ductility – The ability of a material to be drawn into a thin wire. A ductile material can withstand large plastic deformation under tension. Connect ‘duct’ with ‘ductile’ – a wire is like a duct for electricity.

Malleability – The ability of a material to be hammered or rolled into thin sheets without cracking. Gold is very malleable. Visualise a mallet hammering metal into shape.

2. Manufacturing Processes |

Casting – A process where molten metal is poured into a mould and allowed to solidify. Used for complex shapes like engine blocks. Remember: cast the liquid into a solid shape, like casting a spell.

Forging – Shaping metal using compressive forces, often when hot, to improve its strength and grain structure. Think of a blacksmith’s hammer forging a sword.

CNC machining – Computer Numerical Control machining uses programmed commands to control cutting tools and produce precise parts. The machine follows code automatically. Recall: CNC = Code Directs Cutter.

Stress (σ) = Force ÷ Area

Strain (ε) – The deformation of a material relative to its original length. It is a dimensionless ratio: ε = ΔL ÷ L₀, where ΔL is extension and L₀ is original length. Strain stretches the shape.

Strain (ε) = Extension (ΔL) ÷ Original length (L₀)

Young’s modulus (E) – A measure of a material’s stiffness, equal to stress divided by strain within the elastic limit. E = σ ÷ ε. A high value means the material is stiffer. Think: Young = strong, so stiff.

Yield strength – The stress at which a material begins to deform plastically and will not return to its original shape when unloaded. After yield, it ‘gives in’.
