1. Understanding the AQA AS Philosophy Assessment | 了解AQA AS哲学考核方式

The AQA AS Philosophy paper (Paper 1: Epistemology and Moral Philosophy) is divided into two sections, each containing a mix of 5-mark short-answer questions and one 12-mark essay question. Section A focuses on epistemology, Section B on moral philosophy. The 5-mark questions test your ability to explain key concepts and arguments concisely, while the 12-mark essay assesses your capacity to critically evaluate a philosophical claim, weighing up strengths and weaknesses before reaching a reasoned conclusion.

The exam lasts 3 hours, so time management is crucial. For 5-mark questions, aim to spend around 7–8 minutes; for the 12-mark essay, allocate 25–30 minutes. Marks are awarded for AO1 (knowledge and understanding) and AO2 (analysis and evaluation), with the essay requiring both in roughly equal measure.

评分依据AO1(知识与理解)和AO2(分析与评价),论文题对二者的要求大致均衡。

2. The 5-Mark Question Structure | 5

A 5-mark question typically asks you to explain a concept, distinction, or argument. You do not need to evaluate; pure exposition suffices. Begin by defining any key terms, then unpack the idea in a logical sequence. Use examples where they are specifically requested, but avoid lengthy illustration when not needed. A safe paragraph model is: definition, core explanation, and one clarifying sentence.

For instance, a question such as ‘Explain the distinction between a priori and a posteriori knowledge’ would be answered by defining each term, showing how they differ with respect to experience, and perhaps referencing a standard example like ‘2+2=4’ for a priori and ‘the sky is blue’ for a posteriori. Clarity and precision are rewarded, not waffle.

3. The 12-Mark Essay Question: The IDEAL Framework | 12分论文题:IDEAL框架

For the 12-mark essay, adopt the IDEAL structure: Introduction with a clear thesis, Define core terms, Expose the argument or theory, Assess strengths and weaknesses (including counter-arguments and responses), and Link back to the question with a balanced conclusion. This framework ensures you hit both AO1 and AO2 targets and keep your answer coherent from start to finish.

应对12分论文题,可采用IDEAL结构:Introduction(引言,含明确论点)、Define(定义核心术语)、Expose(阐述论证或理论)、Assess(评估优势与缺陷,包括反论证与回应)、Link(回归问题,给出平衡的结论)。

Stage What to Do 要做什么
Introduction State your position and outline the route you will take.
Define Clarify all technical terms so the examiner knows you understand them.
Expose Present the main theory or argument in detail, with justification.
Assess Critically evaluate: raise objections, consider responses, and show how sturdy the view is.
Link / Conclude Return to the question, weigh the evidence, and deliver a final judgement.

4. Step-by-Step Essay Writing Process |

Before putting pen to paper, spend 3–4 minutes planning. Deconstruct the question: what is the exact claim being evaluated? Underline directive words like ‘does it fail?’, ‘to what extent’, or ‘critically assess’. Then jot down the key arguments you will deploy, ensuring at least one strong counter-argument and a response. Planning prevents rambling and helps you stick to the structure.

Write in clear, fluent English, avoiding overly ornate language. Each paragraph should have a single function. After writing, if time allows, quickly read through to correct any slip in terminology or logic. Remember, the examiner is looking for philosophical skill, not poetic prose.

5. Introduction: The Roadmap |

Your introduction should be three to four sentences. Begin by unpacking the question, especially if it involves a technical claim like ‘the tripartite definition of knowledge fails’. Define the core notion briefly and state your verdict upfront: do you agree, disagree, or hold a nuanced position? Then signpost the steps your essay will take. A strong introduction makes the rest of the essay easier to follow and immediately shows the examiner that you are in control.

For example: ‘The tripartite account of knowledge as justified true belief has been widely challenged since Gettier’s 1963 paper. While I will argue that the definition is not entirely bankrupt, the Gettier problem does expose a structural weakness that demands a fourth condition. This essay will outline the JTB theory, present Gettier-style counterexamples, assess responses, and conclude that knowledge requires more than JTB.’ Such an introduction ticks all the IDEAL boxes.

6. Developing Arguments: Expose, Explain, Evaluate |

Each body paragraph should follow a mini-PEEEL structure: Point, Evidence/Example, Explanation, Evaluation, Link. For an essay arguing that the tripartite definition fails, one paragraph might state that Gettier cases produce true, justified beliefs that intuitively do not count as knowledge. Then describe Smith and Jones or the fake-barn scenario, explain why the belief is merely luckily true, and evaluate whether this really shows the definition fails or only that we need a better account of justification. The final sentence links back to the question, reinforcing the weakness.

每个主体段落应遵循一个迷你PEEEL结构:Point(论点)、Evidence/Example(证据/例子)、Explanation(解释)、Evaluation(评价)、Link(回扣)。

When evaluating, go beyond ‘this is a strong argument’. Ask: does the objection rest on a controversial intuition? Are there hidden assumptions? Could a defender of JTB reasonably deny the intuition? This sort of conceptual probing lifts your essay into the top mark band.

7. Counter-Arguments and Responses |

No 12-mark essay is complete without a dedicated counter-argument section. Present the strongest objection to your own line, then reply to it. If you are arguing that the tripartite definition fails, you might introduce a ‘no false lemmas’ condition or reliabilism as a friendly amendment, then test whether it escapes Gettier. Show that while ‘no false lemmas’ handles the Smith–Jones case, it struggles with the fake-barn county. This demonstrates balanced analysis.

You might also consider whether the whole ‘necessary and sufficient conditions’ approach to knowledge is misguided. This deeper meta-philosophical move can impress examiners if handled precisely. However, always tie your counter-argument back to the specific wording of the question.

8. Conclusion: Weighing Up | 结论:权衡

The conclusion should not contain new material. Summarise the main points of the debate, explicitly weigh the strengths of the arguments for and against the claim, and deliver a final, justified verdict. Phrases like ‘on balance’, ‘the more compelling view is…’ or ‘while X is not decisively refuted, the cumulative weight of objections suggests…’ help signal evaluation. Even a suspended judgement can be acceptable if properly argued, but avoid sitting on the fence without reason.

A crisp conclusion might read: ‘In sum, the tripartite definition is not wholly defunct, but the Gettier problem shows that JTB is insufficient as a reductive analysis of knowledge. Attempts to add a fourth condition succeed only partially, which suggests we may need to rethink the original project. Thus, while ‘fail’ is too strong, the definition is certainly in need of repair.’ This directly answers the question and mirrors the nuance established in the essay.

9. Model Answer: ‘Does the tripartite definition of knowledge fail?’ |

The tripartite definition of knowledge, often traced back to Plato’s Theaetetus, holds that a subject S knows a proposition P if and only if P is true, S believes that P, and S is justified in believing that P. This Justified True Belief (JTB) account has been a cornerstone of epistemology. However, since Edmund Gettier’s 1963 paper, many have concluded that JTB is at best incomplete. While I shall argue that the definition does not utterly ‘fail’, it certainly does not succeed as a full analysis of knowledge.

Gettier produced counterexamples where all three JTB conditions are satisfied, yet we intuitively deny that the subject knows. In the classic case, Smith has strong evidence that Jones will get the job and that Jones has ten coins in his pocket. From this, Smith deduces ‘the man who will get the job has ten coins in his pocket’. Unbeknownst to Smith, he himself will get the job, and he also happens to have ten coins in his pocket. The belief is justified and true, but the truth arises merely by accident. It is not knowledge; it is luck. This shows that JTB is not sufficient for knowledge because it permits epistemic luck.

Defenders of the tripartite definition can reply that Gettier cases only reveal a need to tighten the justification condition. One proposal is the ‘no false lemmas’ (NFL) condition: S’s belief must not be based on any false proposition. In the Smith–Jones case, Smith’s reasoning rests on the false lemma that Jones will get the job, so the belief fails the NFL test. However, the fake-barn scenario challenges this defence: Henry sees a real barn in an area peppered with barn facades; his belief ‘there is a barn’ is justified, true, and not inferred from any false lemma, yet it still seems not to be knowledge because he could easily have been wrong. Thus the NFL condition is itself insufficient.

Another response is to move away from an internalist justification condition entirely and adopt reliabilism: S knows that P if P is true, S believes that P, and the belief is produced by a reliable cognitive process. In fake-barn county, Henry’s visual system is generally reliable, but in that specific environment it is not functioning reliably. The reliabilist must then relativise reliability to the actual environment, which brings its own complexities. This suggests that patching up the tripartite definition leads to ever more epicycles, casting doubt on the entire JTB project.

However, the term ‘fail’ may be too harsh. The tripartite definition successfully captures three necessary conditions for knowledge. Even if Gettier shows they are not jointly sufficient, the definition remains pedagogically useful and a starting point for deeper analysis. Moreover, some philosophers, such as Hetherington, argue that Gettier cases simply demonstrate that we are too stingy with knowledge ascriptions, and that perhaps the subjects do know after all—a controversial but thought-provoking stance.

On balance, I contend that the tripartite definition does not utterly fail, but it cannot be accepted as a complete analysis. Its weakness is structural: it treats justification, truth, and belief as independent components that can accidentally align. The Gettier problem demonstrates that knowledge resists such atomistic treatment. A satisfactory account may need to integrate conditions in a holistic way, or perhaps abandon the project of conceptual analysis altogether. Thus, while the definition is not worthless, it fails to provide a watertight account of knowledge.
