📚 AS CIE Media Studies: Formula & Theorem Quick Reference Handbook | AS CIE

This quick reference handbook distils key AS Media Studies theories into memorable ‘formulas’ and ‘theorems’. While media theory is not mathematical, these simplified models help you recall the essential components of media language, representation, audience and institution for the CIE AS examination.

1. Semiotics Formula: Sign = Signifier + Signified |

Sign = Signifier + Signified

Ferdinand de Saussure’s foundational concept: every sign consists of a signifier (the sound, image, or word) and a signified (the concept it represents).

Barthes added layers of denotation (literal meaning) and connotation (cultural associations), but the core equation remains constant.

2. Narrative Equilibrium Theorem (Todorov) |

Equilibrium → Disruption → Recognition → Attempt to Repair → New Equilibrium

Todorov proposed that all narratives follow this five-stage structure. It begins with a state of equilibrium, which is then disrupted by an event.

The disruption is recognised, leading to an attempt to repair the damage, before a new equilibrium is established, often changed from the original.

3. Character Function Theorem (Propp) |

Narrative = Σ (Character Functions) across 7 Spheres of Action

Vladimir Propp analysed Russian folk tales and identified 31 narrative functions and 7 broad character types (spheres of action): Villain, Hero, Donor, Helper, Princess, Dispatcher, False Hero.

These functions and characters combine like variables in an equation to generate the story.

4. Binary Opposition Theorem (Levi-Strauss) |

Meaning = Conflict between Binary Oppositions (e.g. Good ↔ Evil)

Claude Levi-Strauss argued that narratives are structured around pairs of opposing concepts, such as hero/villain, light/dark, or civilisation/wilderness. The resolution of these conflicts creates meaning.

In media, binary oppositions simplify complex issues and reinforce dominant ideologies.

5. Genre Formula: Iconography + Structure + Theme |

Genre = Iconography + Narrative Structure + Recurring Themes

Genre is a combination of visual and auditory codes (iconography), predictable story patterns (structure), and underlying ideas or messages (themes). For example, a Western genre uses cowboy hats, saloons, frontier justice, and themes of civilisation versus savagery.

Steve Neale stressed that genre is also about repetition and difference to keep audiences engaged.

6. Uses and Gratifications Formula |

Media Use = Surveillance + Personal Identity + Personal Relationships + Diversion

Blumler and McQuail’s model sees audiences as active: they use media to fulfil needs. These needs include information and understanding (surveillance), reinforcing self-image (personal identity), social interaction (personal relationships), and escapism (diversion).

The formula helps evaluate why different audiences choose specific media texts.

7. Encoding/Decoding Theorem (Hall) |

Meaning = Dominant, Negotiated, or Oppositional Reading

Stuart Hall’s model: producers encode a preferred meaning into a text, but audiences decode it based on their cultural background. The result can be a dominant-hegemonic reading (accepting the intended meaning), a negotiated reading (partially accepting and adapting), or an oppositional reading (rejecting the intended meaning).

This theorem explains why the same media text can be understood differently.

8. Representation Theorem: Selection + Construction + Mediation |

Representation = Selection + Construction + Mediation

Media representations are not reality but constructed through selective inclusion/exclusion of details, active construction using technical and symbolic codes, and mediation by institutional and ideological contexts. Stuart Hall and others emphasise that representation involves power: who is represented, how, and to what end.

This theorem reminds us to question the ‘naturalness’ of media images.

9. News Values Formula (Galtung & Ruge) |

News Worthiness = Threshold + Frequency + Negativity + Unexpectedness + Personalisation + Elite Reference + etc.

Galtung and Ruge identified a set of news values that determine whether an event becomes ‘news’. Key factors include threshold (magnitude), frequency (fit with news cycle), negativity, unexpectedness, personalisation (human interest), and reference to elite persons or nations.

Editors and journalists apply this formula to filter and prioritise stories.

10. Media Ownership Theorem: Pluralism vs. Marxism |

If Ownership = Diverse & Market-Driven → Content = Pluralist Views
If Ownership = Concentrated (Elite) → Content = Dominant Ideology

Pluralists argue that a free market of media owners results in a diverse range of content because owners compete for audiences. Marxist theorists, such as Curran and Seaton, contend that concentrated ownership (e.g. conglomerates) leads to content that serves elite interests and reinforces capitalist ideology.

This theorem is a quick tool for analysing the relationship between media ownership and output.
