1. Cardiovascular System Essentials |

The heart is a muscular pump. Heart rate (HR) is the number of beats per minute. Stroke volume (SV) is the amount of blood ejected by the left ventricle in one beat. Cardiac output (Q) = HR × SV.

Memory tip: ‘SV’ can be recalled as ‘Squeeze Volume’ — the ventricle squeezes blood out. Cardiac output ‘Q’ is the Quantity of blood per minute.

心输出量 Q 记作每分钟的 Quantity(总量)。

Venous return is the flow of blood back to the heart. It increases during exercise due to the skeletal muscle pump, respiratory pump and vasoconstriction in non-essential areas.

Mnemonic for the three venous return mechanisms: ‘SMR’ — Skeletal pump, Muscle (respiratory) pump, Reduced veins (vasoconstriction). Think ‘Smooth Muscle Returns’.

2. Respiratory System and Gas Exchange |

Tidal volume (TV) is the volume of air inhaled or exhaled per breath. Minute ventilation (VE) = tidal volume × breathing frequency (f). VO2 max is the maximum volume of oxygen the body can take in, transport and utilise per minute.

Think ‘Tidal’ like the tide going in and out — ebb and flow. VO2 max expressed in ml/kg/min is the ‘engine capacity’ of an endurance performer.

Diffusion takes place at the alveoli and muscle capillaries, driven by partial pressure gradients. Haemoglobin carries oxygen; myoglobin stores it in muscles.

Memory: ‘Haemo-globe-in’ (globe = red blood cell) transports O2; ‘Myo- (muscle) + globin’ holds it. The ‘Bohr shift’ moves the curve right when temperature, CO2 and acidity rise — remember ‘Right under Raised heat, CO2 and acid’.

3. Skeletal Muscles and Movement Analysis |

Agonist (prime mover) contracts to create movement; antagonist relaxes. Synergists assist the agonist, fixators stabilise the origin. Example: in a bicep curl the biceps brachii is agonist, triceps brachii is antagonist.

Remember ‘A for Action’ (agonist), ‘A for Against’ (antagonist is opposite). Synergist sounds like ‘synergy’ — working together.

记住 Agonist = Action(动作执行者),Antagonist = Against(对抗)。

Muscle fibre types: Type I (slow oxidative) — high endurance, red, many mitochondria. Type IIa (fast oxidative glycolytic) — combo. Type IIx (fast glycolytic) — explosive, white, fatigue quickly.

Mnemonic: ‘I Slow, II Fast’ — type I is slow and stays for the marathon; type IIx is ‘x-plosive’.

Planes of movement: sagittal divides left/right (flexion/extension), frontal divides front/back (abduction/adduction), transverse divides upper/lower (rotation). Think of a ‘Sagittal arrow’ going through chest front to back — actually mis-reminder: correct: sagittal plane is like a wheel rolling forward, allows flexion, extension. Easy image: ‘Sagittal splits body into left and right — picture a Samurai sword cutting down the middle of your face.’ Frontal: jumping jack (abduction/adduction). Transverse: discus spin.

4. Energy Systems and ATP Resynthesis | 能量系统与 ATP 再合成

ATP is the immediate energy currency. The ATP-PC (phosphocreatine) system provides energy for up to 10 seconds of maximal effort without oxygen. The lactic acid (anaerobic glycolytic) system produces ATP from glucose without oxygen, lasting up to nearly 2 minutes, with lactate and hydrogen ions causing fatigue.

Memory: ‘ATP-PC = explosive sprints, 10 s or less’, ‘Lactic = Lactic burn, 400 m run’. Aerobic system fuels prolonged activities and yields about 38 ATP per glucose.

The aerobic system has three stages: glycolysis (cytoplasm), Krebs cycle (mitochondrial matrix) and electron transport chain (cristae). Fats provide more ATP but require more oxygen; beta-oxidation breaks fatty acids into acetyl-CoA.

Krebs cycle can be remembered as ‘Citric acid cycle’ — the wheel that never stops. Electron chain rides on ‘Cytochromes’ like a relay.

5. Principles of Training and Fitness Components |

Health-related fitness includes aerobic endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and body composition. Skill-related fitness comprises agility, balance, coordination, power, reaction time and speed.

Remember health components as ‘Auntie Strong Muscles Flex Body’ (Aerobic, Strength, Muscular Endurance, Flexibility, Body Comp). Skill: ‘A Big Cat Pounces Rapidly Swift’ (Agility, Balance, Coordination, Power, Reaction, Speed).

Training principles: SPORR — Specificity, Progression, Overload, Reversibility, Recovery. Overload can be manipulated via FITT — Frequency, Intensity, Time, Type.

Think ‘Specific Progressive Overload Reversibly Recovered’. FITT: ‘How Often, How Hard, How Long, What Kind’.

Periodisation: macrocycle (annual), mesocycle (months, e.g. pre-season), microcycle (weeks). Tapering reduces volume before competition to peak.

6. Classification of Motor Skills |

Skills are placed on continua: open–closed (environmental predictability), gross–fine (muscle groups), discrete–serial–continuous (clear start/finish), self-paced–externally-paced (timing control), and simple–complex (decision-making demand).

Open skills are affected by weather, opponents; think ‘Open to environment’. Closed skills like a free-throw — stable and habitual. Gross uses big muscles (jumping), fine uses small muscles (darts).

Discrete skills have a clear beginning and end (tennis serve), serial involves a linked sequence (triple jump), continuous has no obvious start/stop (cycling).

Memory: ‘DSC’ — Discrete (single), Serial (string), Continuous (cycling). Think of a light switch: discrete click, serial switches in a circuit, continuous flow.

7. Learning, Practice and Feedback |

Stages of learning: cognitive (beginner, trial and error), associative (practice, refining), autonomous (automatic, minimal conscious control).

Think ‘CAA’ — Cognitive: Clumsy; Associative: Adjusting; Autonomous: Automatic. A driver first thinks about gears, later drives smoothly without thought.

Types of practice: massed (continuous, no rest), distributed (intervals), fixed (same skill repeated), variable (variations), whole (complete skill), part (broken down).

Massed for discrete, high-motivation learners; distributed for continuous, fatiguing skills. ‘Whole-part-whole’ can be effective: try whole, then part, then whole again.

Feedback is intrinsic (kinaesthetic from within) or extrinsic (from coach, video). Knowledge of results (KR) tells outcome; knowledge of performance (KP) tells about movement quality.

Mnemonic: ‘KR = Result, KP = Process’. Concurrent feedback given during activity; terminal feedback given after.

8. Motivation, Personality and Arousal |

Intrinsic motivation comes from within (enjoyment, pride); extrinsic motivation comes from outside rewards (trophies, praise). Both can combine, but overuse of extrinsic rewards may undermine intrinsic drive.

The ‘Self-determination theory’ highlights autonomy, competence and relatedness as basic psychological needs. ‘Achievement motivation’ relates to need to achieve (Nach) and need to avoid failure (Naf).

Remember ‘Intrinsic = Inside’, ‘Extrinsic = External’. Nach people choose challenging tasks; Naf athletes avoid evaluation or pick overly easy/hard tasks.

Arousal is the state of readiness. The inverted-U theory says performance peaks at moderate arousal. Drive theory suggests performance increases linearly with arousal for well-learned skills. Catastrophe theory shows that high somatic anxiety coupled with high cognitive anxiety can cause a sudden drop in performance.

Think: ‘Inverted U’ like a smile with peak in middle. Catastrophe like a cliff — once over-aroused and worried, performance falls sharply.

9. Stress, Anxiety and Management Techniques |

Cognitive anxiety is mental worry, somatic anxiety is the physical ‘butterflies’. Competitive anxiety appears in sport settings. State anxiety is temporary; trait anxiety is a personality constant.

Remember: ‘Somatic = Body (soma), Cognitive = Thoughts’. State is Situation-dependent.

Stress is a stimulus-response imbalance. The stress process: environmental demand, perception of demand, stress response, behavioural outcome. Stress can be eustress (positive) or distress (negative).

Anxiety management techniques: imagery (visualisation), breathing control, positive self-talk, progressive muscle relaxation, and goal setting (SMARTER).

SMARTER: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Recorded, Time-bound, Evaluated, Re-evaluated. Use all 7 to structure effective goal setting.

10. Sport and Society: Organisations and Commercialisation |

UK Sport is responsible for elite performance, distributing National Lottery funding. Sport England focuses on grassroots participation and increasing sport engagement (‘Active Nation’).

Mnemonic: UK Sport = ‘UK (United Kingdom’s) Elite’, Sport England = ‘Mass Participation’. How duties differ: ‘UK for podium, England for playground’.

National Governing Bodies (NGBs) like The FA, RFU oversee rules, coaching and development for specific sports. The Olympic Charter promotes Olympism blending sport, culture and education.

Commercialisation of sport: sponsorship, media rights, merchandising. The ‘Golden Triangle’ links sport, media and sponsors. Benefits: funding, exposure; drawbacks: loss of control, pressure to change rules.

Think: ‘Triangle of Cash’ — each corner (sport, media, sponsor) feeds the others. Commercialisation can shift sport from ‘play’ to ‘product’.
