1. The Nature of AS OCR Geography Essays | AS OCR

In the OCR AS Geography exams, essay questions appear in both Paper 1 (Landscape Systems) and Paper 2 (Changing Spaces; Making Places). These are typically worth 16 to 20 marks and require extended prose. Unlike short-answer questions, essays demand that you not only recall factual knowledge but also apply it to an unseen context, analyse relationships and evaluate conflicting viewpoints. An answer that merely describes landforms or lists case study details will rarely move beyond Level 2 on the mark scheme. To reach Level 3 or 4, you must demonstrate critical thinking, use specialist geographical terminology and construct a logical argument that directly addresses the question throughout.

OCR essays are marked using a levels-based approach. The highest band rewards answers that show ‘detailed and accurate knowledge and understanding’, ‘clear and logical structure’ and ‘evaluation that is fully integrated into the argument’. This means every sentence in your essay should serve a purpose: making a point, supporting it with a case study, explaining why it matters, or linking it back to the question. A simple ‘for and against’ list without explicit evaluation will be capped at around 10–12 marks. Understanding this marking philosophy is the first step towards writing a better essay.

2. Decoding Command Words |

The command word in an essay question is your key to unlocking what the examiner expects. In OCR AS Geography, the most common command words are ‘Assess’, ‘Evaluate’, ‘Discuss’ and ‘To what extent do you agree?’. These are not interchangeable; each carries a specific meaning. ‘Assess’ and ‘Evaluate’ both require you to weigh up the importance or success of something, but ‘Evaluate’ often expects a more explicit judgement at the end. ‘Discuss’ invites you to explore different sides of an issue, while ‘To what extent’ demands that you make and justify a clear overall judgement, not sit on the fence.

在 OCR AS 地理中,最常见的指令词是‘Assess’(评估)、‘Evaluate’(评价)、‘Discuss’(讨论)和‘To what extent do you agree?’(你在多大程度上同意?)。

Consider the difference between these two stems: ‘Assess the role of marine erosion in the formation of coastal landforms’ and ‘To what extent is marine erosion the most important factor in shaping coastal landscapes?’. The first requires you to break down the contribution of marine erosion, weighing it against other processes such as subaerial weathering and mass movement, but your final judgement can be nuanced. The second explicitly asks you to decide whether it is the most important factor and then build a sustained argument to defend that position. Recognising this subtlety will shape your entire essay structure from the introduction onwards.

试比较以下两个题干的差异:‘Assess the role of marine erosion in the formation of coastal landforms’(评估海洋侵蚀在海岸地貌形成中的作用)和‘To what extent is marine erosion the most important factor in shaping coastal landscapes?’(海洋侵蚀在多大程度上是塑造海岸景观最重要的因素?)。

3. Mastering the PEEL Framework | 掌握 PEEL 框架

PEEL — Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link — is one of the most effective ways to structure each paragraph in a geography essay. The strength of PEEL lies in its discipline: it prevents you from drifting into narrative or description. Start with a clear Point that directly addresses the question. For example, if the question asks about the role of geology in cliff formation, your point might be: ‘Geology, particularly rock hardness, exerts a primary control on cliff profiles along concordant coastlines.’ This immediately shows the examiner you are being analytical, not just listing facts.

Next, introduce precise Evidence. A strong geography essay uses both location-specific detail from your case studies and conceptual facts. You might write: ‘The Jurassic Coast in Dorset illustrates this clearly. At Lulworth Cove, the hard Portland Stone acts as a resistant barrier, while the softer Wealden clays behind are rapidly eroded, creating a cove where the harder strata protect the bay.’ After the evidence, provide Explanation — the ‘why’. Explain how differential erosion operates here, tying it back to geological processes. Finally, Link the paragraph back to the question with a mini-conclusion sentence: ‘Thus, while marine processes provide the energy, it is geological variation that ultimately dictates the landform pattern, demonstrating an important but not exclusive role.’ This anchor sentence drives your argument forward.

4. Structuring an Essay: The Classic Approach |

Every successful AS geography essay follows a clear tripartite structure: Introduction, main body and Conclusion. The introduction is much more than a rephrasing of the question. It should define key terms, signal your line of argument and, for ‘assess’ or ‘evaluate’ questions, acknowledge that multiple factors or perspectives exist. A strong introduction often ends with a thesis statement that previews your overall judgement, giving the essay direction from the very first paragraph. Avoid cryptic openings like ‘Coasts are very interesting’; instead, start with a precise geographical claim rooted in the question.

The main body should typically contain three or four substantial paragraphs, each driven by a distinct theme or factor rather than simply pro-then-con. For a question on TNCs and place-making, you might structure paragraphs around: economic opportunities, environmental challenges and social-cultural impacts. Within each, you can weigh positives and negatives to maintain balance. Avoid one-sentence paragraphs; each body paragraph should contain a full PEEL sequence and be at least five to seven lines of coherent analysis. Transition phrases such as ‘However, this view is contested when considering…’ or ‘A more significant influence may be…’ help to weave an evaluative thread through your essay.

The conclusion must not introduce new material. Instead, it should summarise the argument and deliver a definitive, well-supported judgement. For a ‘To what extent’ question, you need to state the extent explicitly — ‘To a large extent, geological control is dominant, except where high-energy storm events override rock resistance’ — rather than a vague ‘both are important’. The mark scheme specifically rewards a conclusion that reflects the balance of argument presented in the body. The conclusion should feel like the natural, inevitable outcome of the preceding analysis, not an afterthought.

5. Building a Balanced Argument |

Balance in a geography essay does not mean sitting on the fence; it means showing that you have considered alternative perspectives before arriving at your judgement. A high-level essay acknowledges counterarguments and then explains why they are less significant, or under what conditions they might become more significant. This demonstrates the synoptic thinking that OCR examiners look for. For instance, when arguing that globalisation has mainly brought economic benefits, you should also discuss the loss of local identity or environmental degradation but then explain why, in your chosen case study, the economic multiplier effect has been more transformative.

A useful technique is to use concessive clauses within your PEEL paragraphs: ‘Although marine erosion is visibly dramatic at the cliff face, its long-term impact on planform morphology is often secondary to geological inheritance’, or ‘While TNC investment created low-skilled jobs, it simultaneously undermined local entrepreneurship, suggesting a more complex cost-benefit balance.’ Such phrasing shows you can hold two ideas in tension, which is the hallmark of Level 3 and 4 thinking. Never present one-sided evidence without some degree of qualification.

6. Integrating Case Studies |

Case studies are the backbone of your essay evidence. In OCR AS Geography, you must use real place-based examples with specific locational detail and factual data. For physical topics, this might include named landforms, geology types, rates of erosion or dates of significant events. For human topics, data on employment change, demographic shifts, investment figures or survey results are invaluable. An example that says ‘In Liverpool…’ is weak; one that says ‘In the Anfield district of Liverpool, the regeneration project created over 800 jobs but displaced 200 residents…’ is powerful because it is precise and quantifiable.

Each body paragraph should ideally embed one well-developed case study rather than mentioning four places superficially. Reciting generalised textbook descriptions will not score highly. Instead, show how the specific details of your case study allow you to test the question’s assertion. If the question asks about the effectiveness of soft engineering, use the detailed costs, successes and failures of beach nourishment at Pevensey Bay to evaluate effectiveness, rather than composing a generic list of soft engineering types. This turns your case study into an analytical tool, not just a memory test.

7. Model Answer: Physical Geography |

The following is a paragraph from an essay answering the question: ‘Assess the importance of marine processes relative to subaerial processes in the development of cliff profiles.’ It demonstrates PEEL in action within a physical geography context.

Point: Marine processes, particularly hydraulic action and abrasion at the cliff foot, are the primary triggers for steep, actively retreating cliff profiles on exposed coastlines. Evidence: At Flamborough Head in Yorkshire, the vertical chalk cliffs experience intense wave pounding during North Sea storms, with erosion rates averaging 0.1–0.5 m/year. The formation of wave-cut notches at the base directly undermines the cliff, precipitating periodic rockfalls. Explanation: Here, marine erosion provides the critical undercutting mechanism without which the subaerial processes of freeze-thaw weathering and solution would act more gradually on a stable slope, producing a far gentler profile. Link: However, where rock resistance is low, as in the boulder clay cliffs at Holderness, subaerial slumping becomes dominant once the toe has been over-steepened by wave action, suggesting the two are interdependent rather than simply competing.

Notice how the paragraph avoids describing the process in isolation. Instead, it constantly measures marine against subaerial influence, using the exact language of the question. The specific data and named locations give it authority, and the final sentence sets up a nuanced evaluation that will be resolved in the overall conclusion.

8. Model Answer: Human Geography |

This paragraph is from an essay answering: ‘Evaluate the role of transnational corporations (TNCs) in creating economic opportunities and social challenges in a local place you have studied.’ It shows how to balance positive and negative impacts within the same theme.

Point: The entry of the Tata Group into Port Talbot, South Wales, illustrates the dual economic-socio profile that TNCs can carve in an old industrial region. Evidence: Tata Steel’s ownership of the Port Talbot steelworks since 2007 secured over 4,000 direct jobs and approximately 12,000 indirect jobs in the supply chain. Investment of £200 million in a new blast furnace in 2013 modernised the plant, temporarily raising local average wages by 8%. Explanation: This demonstrates a significant economic anchoring effect: the TNC prevented the deindustrialisation spiral that had plagued similar towns. However, these economic gains were coupled with social costs. The plant’s CO₂ emissions placed Port Talbot among the UK’s most polluted towns, contributing to respiratory illness rates 14% above the national average. Frequent job insecurity amid global steel price fluctuations exacerbated mental health issues. Link: Therefore, while the TNC’s economic role in employment is quantifiably substantial, its social legacy is far more contested, challenging the view that TNC presence is an unalloyed good for host communities.

In a full essay, this paragraph would be followed by another theme — perhaps environmental legacy or cultural change — and then a conclusion that weighs the overall role. The strength of the example lies in its refusal to treat TNCs as purely beneficial or harmful, mirroring the complexity expected in AS answers.

9. Common Mistakes and How to Fix Them | 常见错误与修正

One of the most frequent errors in AS geography essays is writing everything you know about a topic without selecting what is relevant to the question. This leads to ‘knowledge dumps’ that lack sharp focus. To avoid this, always annotate the question before you begin: underline the command word and the key thematic terms, then brainstorm only the ideas that directly help you answer. Cross out any case study details that are interesting but tangential — they will steal time without earning marks.

Another mistake is confusing evaluation with simple contrast. Writing ‘On the one hand… on the other hand…’ without a concluding judgement is insufficient for the highest marks. After presenting both sides, you need to decide which is more significant and why. Use evaluative phrases like ‘The overriding factor is…’, ‘…is ultimately more influential because…’ or ‘The evidence weighs in favour of…’. Furthermore, avoid unsupported assertions like ‘Coastal management is effective’. Always follow such claims with proof: ‘…as demonstrated by the 60% reduction in cliff retreat at Cromer after the installation of rock groynes.’

A third pitfall is neglecting scale. A good essay often plays with spatial and temporal scale. For instance, a policy might be successful locally but contribute to wider problems downstream, or a short-term economic boost may lead to long-term decline. Introducing scale into your PEEL paragraphs adds sophistication. Instead of just stating that beach nourishment works, you could note: ‘At Southwold, nourishment has been effective for the immediate shoreline over a 15-year period, but its high cost and the need for repeated operations raise questions about its sustainability at a regional level.’ This instantly lifts your analysis.

10. Time Management in the Exam |

In OCR AS Geography, you have roughly 25–30 minutes to plan and write a 16- or 20-mark essay. A common reason for underperformance is spending too much time on the first paragraph and then rushing the conclusion. A disciplined approach is to allocate 5 minutes for planning, 20 minutes for writing and 2–3 minutes for checking. During planning, sketch a quick mind map or outline on the question paper. Jot down your thesis statement, the three or four themes for the body and the key case study data for each. This structure becomes your map, preventing you from drifting off course.

Use the PEEL structure to maintain pace. If you know each body paragraph will follow the same internal logic, you will not waste time wondering what to write next. Practice writing essays against a timer regularly, not just for content but to develop a rhythm. Aim to leave two lines after each paragraph to ease editing. The conclusion is crucial: never skip it. Even a two-sentence conclusion that directly answers the question can pull your mark up if the rest of the essay is sound. Remember, an essay without a conclusion usually cannot reach the highest level, regardless of the quality of the analysis.

11. Practice and Self-Assessment |

The best way to improve your essay writing is to write essays regularly and then critically evaluate your own work using the OCR mark scheme. After writing a practice essay, read through the exam board’s descriptors for Level 1–4 and honestly assess where your answer falls. Ask yourself: Did I use a case study with precise data? Did I evaluate at the end of each paragraph? Is my conclusion a genuine judgement or just a summary? This metacognitive process helps you internalise the standards.

Swap essays with a study partner and mark each other’s work. Giving feedback often sharpens your own analytical eye. Pay particular attention to the connection between paragraphs. A sequence of excellent but disjointed PEEL paragraphs will not score top marks; there must be a thread that runs through the essay. Look for linking words and evaluative signposts. Also, practise writing essay plans for a wide range of past paper questions. The ability to generate a clear structure in five minutes is a skill that will serve you extremely well in the exam hall.
