1. What is Philosophy? |

Philosophy is the systematic study of fundamental questions concerning existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. It relies on rational argument, critical thinking, and logical analysis rather than empirical investigation alone. Key branches include epistemology (the theory of knowledge), ethics (moral philosophy), metaphysics (the nature of reality), and logic.

2. Epistemology: The Nature of Knowledge |

Epistemology examines what knowledge is and how we acquire it. The traditional definition characterises knowledge as justified true belief (JTB). For a person S to know that P, (i) P must be true, (ii) S must believe that P, and (iii) S must be justified in believing P. Gettier cases challenge this definition by showing that justified true belief can be accidental and not amount to knowledge.

3. Rationalism vs Empiricism |

Rationalists argue that reason is the primary source of knowledge, and some ideas are innate. Descartes believed we could deduce truths about reality from clear and distinct ideas, like ‘I think, therefore I am’. Empiricists, such as Locke and Hume, claim that all knowledge originates from sense experience; the mind is a tabula rasa (blank slate) at birth. Hume further distinguished between relations of ideas (a priori) and matters of fact (a posteriori).

A key exam topic is the debate over innate ideas. Plato’s slave boy example suggests we recollect knowledge from a previous existence, while Locke argues that complex ideas are built from simple impressions.

4. The Problem of Scepticism |

Philosophical scepticism questions whether we can have any knowledge at all. Global scepticism posits that we cannot know anything about the external world because we might be dreaming, a brain in a vat, or deceived by an evil demon. Descartes’ method of doubt attempted to find an indubitable foundation—his own existence as a thinking thing—to defeat radical scepticism. Responses include reliabilism and Moore’s ‘here is one hand’ argument.

5. Mind and Body: Dualism vs Physicalism |

Substance dualism, defended by Descartes, holds that the mind is a non-physical substance distinct from the body. Interactionism claims mental events can cause physical events and vice versa, but it faces the problem of explaining how an immaterial mind can move a material body. Property dualism maintains that mental properties are non-physical even if they emerge from a physical brain. In contrast, physicalism asserts that the mind is entirely physical: the identity theory identifies mental states with brain states, while functionalism defines mental states by their causal roles.

6. Personal Identity |

What makes a person the same over time? The psychological continuity theory, inspired by Locke, says personal identity is based on memory and psychological connections. The body theory holds that sameness of the living body is necessary and sufficient. The soul theory posits an immaterial soul as the carrier of identity. Thought experiments like the ship of Theseus and brain transplant cases test these theories. Derek Parfit argued that identity is not what matters; rather, psychological connectedness and continuity are important for survival.

7. Arguments for God’s Existence |

The teleological (design) argument, advanced by Paley, compares the universe to a watch: its complexity implies a designer. Hume and Darwin provided criticisms, such as the problem of evil and natural selection offering an alternative explanation. The cosmological argument, as formulated by Aquinas, starts from the existence of the universe and argues for a necessary first cause. The ontological argument, proposed by Anselm, defines God as the greatest conceivable being and claims existence is a perfection, so God must exist. Gaunilo’s island objection and Kant’s criticism that existence is not a predicate challenge the ontological argument.

8. The Problem of Evil |

The logical problem of evil argues that an omnipotent, omnibenevolent God and the existence of evil are logically incompatible. The evidential problem points to the sheer amount and distribution of suffering. Theodicies attempt to resolve the conflict: Augustine’s free will defence claims evil is a privation of good and results from humanity’s misuse of free will. Irenean theodicies view evil as necessary for soul-making. Swinburne argues that natural evils provide opportunities for virtuous responses. Critics question whether a perfect God would need to permit such extreme suffering.

9. Ethical Theories: Utilitarianism, Deontology, Virtue Ethics |

Utilitarianism, developed by Bentham and Mill, is a consequentialist theory that judges actions by their outcomes: the greatest happiness for the greatest number. Act utilitarianism calculates each act directly, while rule utilitarianism follows rules that generally maximise utility. Deontological ethics, associated with Kant, emphasises duty and the categorical imperative: act only according to maxims that could become universal laws, and treat humanity always as an end, never merely as a means. Virtue ethics, originating from Aristotle, focuses on the character of the moral agent and the development of virtues like courage and temperance to achieve eudaimonia (flourishing).

Students should be able to apply these theories to issues like lying, stealing, animal rights, and euthanasia, evaluating their strengths and weaknesses.

10. Free Will and Determinism |

The debate over free will concerns whether our choices are determined by prior causes. Hard determinism says all events, including human actions, are necessitated by the laws of nature and past states, so free will is an illusion. Libertarianism maintains that we have free will and indeterminism is true, often invoking agent causation. Compatibilism (soft determinism) argues that free will is compatible with determinism: a free action is one caused by the agent’s own desires and intentions, without coercion. Key thinkers include D’Holbach, Hume, and Kant. The implications for moral responsibility are central: if determinism is true, can we be held truly responsible for our actions?
