1. Materials & Properties |

Tensile Strength: The maximum stress a material can withstand while being stretched or pulled before breaking. It indicates how well a material resists tension.

Hardness: A measure of how resistant a material is to indentation, scratching, or wear. Hard materials resist surface deformation.

Toughness: The ability of a material to absorb energy and plastically deform without fracturing. Tough materials combine strength and ductility.

Ductility: The capacity of a material to be drawn into a wire or elongated under tensile stress without breaking. Copper exhibits high ductility.

Brittleness: The tendency of a material to fracture without significant plastic deformation. Brittle materials, like glass, fail suddenly under stress.

Fatigue: The weakening of a material caused by repeated loading and unloading cycles, which can lead to crack initiation and failure below the normal tensile strength.

2. Forces & Mechanics |

Tension: A pulling force that acts to stretch an object. Structural members such as cables are often designed to bear tensile loads.

Compression: A pushing force that tends to shorten or crush a component. Columns and struts primarily experience compression.

Shear Force: A force that acts parallel to a surface, causing layers of the material to slide relative to each other. Rivets and bolts often resist shear forces.

Bending Moment: The internal moment that causes a beam to bend; it results from external forces applied perpendicular to the beam’s axis.

Torque: A turning or twisting force that causes rotation. Torque is applied by wrenches, motors, and drive shafts.

Stress and Strain: Stress is the internal resistance force per unit area within a material. Strain is the measure of deformation, defined as the change in length divided by the original length.

σ = F ÷ A

ε = ΔL ÷ L₀

3. Manufacturing Processes |

Casting: A process where molten metal is poured into a mould cavity and allowed to solidify into the desired shape. Sand casting and die casting are common types.

Forging: Shaping metal using compressive forces, often at high temperature, to improve grain structure and strength. Hammers or presses are used.

Welding: A joining process that fuses materials, usually metals, by melting the workpieces and often adding a filler material to form a strong joint.

Soldering: A lower-temperature joining method using a filler metal (solder) with a melting point below the workpieces, commonly used in electronics.

3D Printing (Additive Manufacturing): Building a part layer by layer from a digital model, using materials such as plastic filament or metal powder.

CNC Machining: Computer Numerical Control machining uses programmed commands to precisely remove material from a workpiece with cutting tools, achieving high accuracy.

4. Electronics & Circuits |

Voltage (V): The electrical potential difference between two points; it drives current through a circuit. Measured in volts (V).

Current (I): The rate of flow of electric charge through a conductor. Measured in amperes (A).

Resistance (R): The opposition to the flow of current. Measured in ohms (Ω). Resistors are used to control current and voltage levels.
