Component Focus Exam Details
Component 1: Studies in Depth (British History) A specific period in British history, e.g. ‘The Elizabethan Age, 1558–1603’.
1 hour 15 mins, 60 marks (30% of GCSE)
Component 2: Studies in Depth (Non-British History) A non-British depth study, e.g. ‘Germany in Transition, 1919–1939’.
1 hour 15 mins, 60 marks (30% of GCSE)
Component 3: Thematic Studies A broad theme over a long period of time, e.g. ‘Changes in Health and Medicine, c.1345 to the present day’.
1 hour 30 mins, 60 marks (30% of GCSE)

In Components 1 and 2 you will also encounter source utility and interpretation questions, which require you to analyse historical evidence and evaluate historians’ arguments. Component 3 includes a mix of knowledge and source analysis. No single paper can be ignored – a balanced approach across all three is essential.

The assessment objectives (AOs) weighting is also helpful to understand: AO1 (knowledge and understanding) accounts for about 40%, AO2 (explanation and analysis of events) for 30%, and AO3 (source analysis) / AO4 (interpretations) combined for the remaining 30%. This means simply recalling facts is not enough – you must practise explaining causes, consequences, and significance.

了解评估目标(AOs)的权重同样有帮助:AO1(知识与理解)约占40%,AO2(事件的解释与分析)占30%,而AO3(史料分析)与AO4(历史解释)合计占剩下的30%。

2. Overview of Key Topics and Options |

Schools choose their specific topics from a list provided by Eduqas. Even if you do not yet know exactly which options your school has selected, familiarising yourself with the possibilities will give you a head start.

For the British depth study, popular options include ‘The Elizabethan Age, 1558–1603’, which covers government, religion, and culture under Elizabeth I; ‘The Age of Reform, 1815–1851’, examining Chartism and social change; ‘Radicalism and Protest, 1810–1848’, focusing on working-class movements; and ‘Depression, War and Recovery, 1930–1951’, exploring the impact of the Great Depression and World War II on Wales and England.

Non-British depth study choices commonly involve ‘Germany in Transition, 1919–1939’, which traces the Weimar Republic’s collapse and the rise of the Nazis; ‘The Development of the USA, 1929–2000’, covering civil rights, Cold War and social transformation; ‘The Crusades, c.1095–1149’, investigating medieval religious conflict; and ‘The Mughal Empire, 1526–1707’, offering a window into early modern South Asia.

The thematic study spans a much longer timeframe. Possible themes include ‘Changes in Health and Medicine, c.1345 to the present day’, which looks at disease, surgery, and public health; ‘Changes in Crime and Punishment, c.1500 to the present day’, analysing shifts in law enforcement and attitudes; and ‘Changes in Warfare, c.1250 to the present day’, tracking the evolution of weapons, tactics, and the soldier’s experience.

3. Building Chronological Understanding |

A strong sense of chronology is the backbone of historical thinking. Over the summer, try constructing a simple timeline of the broad period your chosen topics will cover, marking key events such as wars, reforms, and scientific breakthroughs.

Begin by plotting the absolute essentials: for Elizabethan England, note the dates of the Religious Settlement (1559), the Spanish Armada (1588), and the end of Elizabeth’s reign (1603). For Germany in Transition, mark the Treaty of Versailles (1919), the Munich Putsch (1923), the Wall Street Crash (1929), and the Enabling Act (1933). This visual framework will make new information easier to retain.

You don’t need to memorise every date now. The goal is to see how events connect. Use coloured pens or digital tools like Tiki-Toki to create an interactive timeline, leaving space to add more detail once your course begins.

4. Source Analysis Skills: A Head Start |

Sources – letters, speeches, cartoons, photographs, and official documents – are at the heart of the Eduqas exams. You will need to evaluate a source’s utility, meaning how useful it is to a historian investigating a specific question.

As a summer exercise, pick any historical photograph or short extract online and ask yourself three questions: What can I learn from this source? What are its limitations? And what other sources would I need to cross-check its claims? The acronym ‘PACMAN’ (Purpose, Author, Content, Motive, Audience, Nature) can guide your thinking.

For instance, examine a Nazi propaganda poster from the 1930s. It is useful as evidence of how the regime wanted to be seen, but it is limited because it presents a one-sided, idealised image. A historian would also need statistics, diaries, or foreign newspaper reports to build a balanced interpretation.

5. Interpretation and Historiography |

In Component 2, you will be asked to explain why historians have different interpretations of the same event. This requires you to understand what shapes a historian’s viewpoint: access to new evidence, political context, or the questions they choose to ask.

During the summer, you can dip into accessible historiography. For a German depth study, compare a traditional account blaming the weakness of the Weimar constitution for Hitler’s rise with a more recent study that emphasises the role of economic crisis and elite manipulation. Jot down the key differences.

You don’t need to read academic monographs. Websites like the BBC History Extra or articles from the A-level journal ‘Modern History Review’ often summarise historiographical debates in an approachable way. This early exposure will help you see history not as a fixed narrative, but as an ongoing conversation.

6. Developing Exam Technique for Component 1 |

Component 1 typically includes questions that ask you to describe, explain, and judge significance. For example, you might be asked to ‘Explain why the Spanish Armada was defeated’ or ‘To what extent did religion change under Elizabeth?’. The key is to structure your answers with a clear point, evidence, and explanation.

As a low-stakes summer task, write a single paragraph in response to a sample question. Use the PEEL model: Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link. For ‘Explain why the Weimar Republic faced challenges in the 1920s’, your Point could be ‘One major challenge was hyperinflation.’ Your Evidence: ‘In 1923, the government printed money to pay reparations, causing the mark to collapse.’ Explanation: ‘This destroyed middle-class savings and undermined faith in democracy, making extremist parties more attractive.’ Link: ‘This economic turmoil therefore contributed to long-term instability.’

Repeating this with two or three questions will sharpen your writing before term starts. You don’t need full essays; focus on developing one strong, analytical paragraph at a time.

7. Enhancing Essay Writing Skills |

GCSE History requires extended writing, especially in the Thematic Study where you will be asked to discuss change and continuity over time. A common pitfall is telling a story rather than constructing an argument. Your essays should always answer the question, not simply narrate events.

Practice the difference between narrative and analysis. A narrative sentence: ‘Edward Jenner discovered vaccination in 1796.’ An analytical sentence: ‘Jenner’s smallpox vaccine was revolutionary because it was the first scientific attempt to prevent disease
