1. The Role of Experiments in Psychology | 实验在心理学中的角色

Experiments are the most powerful tool psychologists have to establish cause-and-effect relationships between variables. By manipulating an independent variable (IV) and measuring the dependent variable (DV) while controlling other factors, researchers can draw conclusions about what causes changes in behaviour or mental processes.

2. Identifying and Operationalising Variables | 识别与操作化变量

The independent variable (IV) is the factor that the researcher deliberately changes or manipulates. The dependent variable (DV) is the factor that is measured to see if the IV has had an effect. To conduct a valid experiment, both the IV and DV must be operationalised—stated in a clear, measurable way. For example, if you study the effect of noise on memory, you could operationalise ‘noise’ as ’70 dB white noise via headphones’ and ‘memory’ as ‘number of words correctly recalled from a 20-word list’.

Any other variable that could influence the DV is an extraneous variable. If not controlled, they can become confounding variables and lower the internal validity of the study.

3. Types of Experiments | 实验类型

There are several types of experiment, each with its own strengths and weaknesses.

• Laboratory experiments are conducted in a controlled, artificial environment. They allow high control over variables and easy replication, but may lack ecological validity because the setting is unlike real life.

• Field experiments are carried out in a natural setting. The IV is still manipulated, but the environment is real. This increases ecological validity, but there is less control over extraneous variables.

• Natural experiments involve a naturally occurring IV, such as a flood or a change in law. The researcher does not directly manipulate the IV, so cause-and-effect conclusions are weaker, but they allow us to study variables that cannot be manipulated for ethical or practical reasons.

4. Experimental Designs | 实验设计

Experimental design refers to how participants are allocated to different conditions of the IV. Three main designs are used.

Independent groups design: Different participants take part in each condition. Advantage: no order effects (practice, fatigue). Disadvantage: participant variables between groups may bias results; more participants are needed.

Repeated measures design: The same participants are used in all conditions. Advantage: participant variables are controlled. Disadvantage: order effects can occur, and participants may guess the aim, leading to demand characteristics.

5. Formulating Hypotheses | 形成假设

A hypothesis is a precise, testable prediction about the outcome of an experiment. GCSE Eduqas expects you to write both experimental (alternative) and null hypotheses.

The experimental hypothesis states there will be a difference (or relationship) between conditions. It can be directional (one-tailed) if you predict the direction of the difference, e.g., ‘Participants recall more words in silence than in noise,’ or non-directional (two-tailed) if you simply predict a difference without stating the direction, e.g., ‘There will be a difference in word recall between silent and noisy conditions.’

The null hypothesis predicts there will be no difference (or no relationship), and any observed difference is due to chance.

6. Sampling Techniques | 抽样技术

Sampling is how participants are selected from a target population. The method used affects how representative the sample is.

• Random sampling: Every member of the target population has an equal chance of being selected. Highly representative but difficult to achieve in practice.

• Opportunity sampling: Participants are chosen from those who are available and willing. Quick and easy, but often unrepresentative and biased.
