1. Sociological Approaches |

Sociology uses evidence and critical thinking to move beyond common sense explanations of social life. The subject is built on the idea that our individual choices are shaped by wider social forces. OCR candidates need to understand the difference between social structures (institutions, norms) and social processes (socialisation, labelling). A key debate concerns the relationship between the individual and society – whether we are puppets of social structures or active creators of meaning.

Sociologists adopt different perspectives to answer questions about order, conflict and inequality. Structural approaches such as functionalism and Marxism see society as a system that shapes individuals, while social action theories such as interactionism emphasise how people actively construct social reality through everyday interactions. GCSE candidates should be able to compare these approaches and apply them to topics like families and education.

The concept of consensus versus conflict is central. Functionalists view society as based on shared values, while Marxists and feminists point to deep divisions of class and gender. Knowing these basic theoretical orientations helps you analyse any social issue the exam might present.

2. Sociological Theories |

Functionalism compares society to a biological organism: each part (family, education, religion) performs functions that maintain the whole. Émile Durkheim’s study of suicide showed that even the most personal act is influenced by social integration and regulation. For GCSE, you need to know how functionalists explain key institutions – for instance, the family meets society’s need for primary socialisation and emotional stability.

Marxism focuses on class conflict between the bourgeoisie (ruling class) and proletariat (working class). Institutions such as the education system are seen as ideological state apparatuses that serve ruling-class interests by legitimating inequality. Students are expected to recognise how Marxist ideas apply to the hidden curriculum, streaming and the correspondence principle in schools.

Feminism criticises the patriarchal nature of society. Liberal feminists campaign for legal reforms, while radical feminists argue that patriarchy is rooted in the family structure. Intersectionality, a more recent development, shows how gender interacts with class and ethnicity. When writing about families or crime, you should be able to use feminist insights to challenge functionalist assumptions.

Interactionism takes a micro-level view, focusing on small-scale interactions and the meanings people attach to behaviour. Labelling theory, explored by sociologists such as Howard Becker, shows how teachers’ labels can create self-fulfilling prophecies in education, and how police labelling can amplify deviance. This perspective reminds us that social reality is socially constructed.

3. Research Methods |

To produce reliable knowledge, sociologists use a range of research methods. These are split into quantitative methods (such as questionnaires, structured interviews and official statistics) and qualitative methods (such as in-depth interviews, participant observation and case studies). Quantitative data are numerical and allow for generalisations, while qualitative data provide depth and insight into meanings.

Key research concepts include validity, reliability, representativeness and generalisability. A method is valid if it gives a true picture of social reality; it is reliable if it can be repeated and produce consistent results. For the exam, you must discuss strengths and limitations of each method. For example, laboratory experiments have high reliability but low ecological validity when studying complex human behaviour.

Ethical considerations are also vital. The British Sociological Association (BSA) sets guidelines that require informed consent, confidentiality and avoidance of harm. Covert observation, while sometimes producing more valid data, raises serious ethical problems. You should be prepared to link these concerns to real-world research examples, such as studies of gangs or classroom behaviour.

Sampling techniques affect the quality of research. Random sampling gives every member of the target population an equal chance of being selected, improving representativeness. Snowball sampling, often used with hard-to-reach groups, is convenient but less representative. In the exam, you might be asked to evaluate a study’s sampling strategy and suggest improvements.

4. Socialisation, Culture and Identity |

Socialisation is the lifelong process through which individuals learn the culture of their society. Primary socialisation occurs within the family during early childhood, where basic norms, values and language are acquired. Secondary socialisation takes place later through agencies such as schools, peer groups, the media and religion. These agencies transmit cultural expectations and shape how we see ourselves.

Agents of socialisation also teach gender roles. Ann Oakley distinguished between sex (biological) and gender (socially constructed). From a young age, children are channelled into masculine and feminine identities through toys, language and expectations – a process feminists call canalisation. Understanding this distinction helps you analyse why gender patterns persist in subject choices and occupations.

Culture refers to the whole way of life of a society, including language, customs, beliefs and material objects. The concept of subculture describes a group whose norms differ from the mainstream. Youth subcultures, for example, often represent symbolic resistance to dominant values. OCR questions frequently ask candidates to discuss how globalisation and migration have created cultural diversity and hybrid identities.

Social identity is the way we define ourselves in relation to groups we belong to. It can be based on class, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, age or disability. The interactionist perspective sees identity as negotiated – we perform different roles in different contexts. A pupil may behave one way with teachers and another with friends, illustrating how identity is fluid and contextual.

5. Families | 家庭

The family is a central topic in GCSE Sociology. Candidates must know different family types, including nuclear, extended, lone-parent, reconstituted and same-sex families. The conventional nuclear family is no longer dominant; family diversity has increased due to factors such as secularisation, legal changes and shifts in gender roles. The Rapoports identified five types of family diversity in Britain, from organisational to cultural.

The functions of the family have been debated. Functionalists like Murdock argue that the family performs four essential functions: sexual, reproductive, economic and educational. Parsons emphasised two: primary socialisation and stabilisation of adult personalities. Marxists, however, see the family as serving the capitalist system by providing emotional support for alienated workers and reproducing labour power without cost to employers.

Changes in family patterns are linked to wider social trends. The increase in divorce rates since the 1960s reflects changes in law, declining stigma and rising expectations of marriage. There has also been a growth in cohabitation and children born outside marriage. Sociologists note that the symmetrical family, where conjugal roles are more equal, is more common among younger, middle-class couples. Yet the dual burden and triple shift remain realities for many women.

Childhood is a social construction; what it means to be a child varies historically and cross-culturally. In medieval Europe, Aries argued, childhood did not exist as a distinct life stage. Today, in the UK, childhood is seen as a protected period, yet critics point to the ‘toxic childhood’ syndrome linked to screen time, commercial pressures and excessive testing. These debates appear regularly in OCR papers.

6. Education | 教育

The sociology of education examines the relationship between schooling and society. Functionalists highlight the role of education in secondary socialisation, teaching norms, values and skills for the division of labour. Durkheim saw education as creating social solidarity, while Parsons viewed it as bridging the particularistic values of the family and the universalistic values of wider society. Meritocracy – the idea that success is based on ability and effort – is a key functionalist concept, though much evidence challenges this ideal.

Marxists argue that education reproduces class inequality. Bowles and Gintis proposed the correspondence principle: the relationships and structures of school mirror those of the workplace, preparing working-class students for obedience and middle-class students for managerial roles. The hidden curriculum – implicit lessons about hierarchy, competition and gender – reinforces these patterns. Concepts such as cultural capital (knowledge, language, tastes valued by the dominant class) help explain why middle-class children tend to achieve higher grades.

Labelling and the self-fulfilling prophecy are at the heart of interactionist studies of education. Teachers inevitably classify students, often on the basis of stereotypes related to class, gender or ethnicity. Once a student is labelled as ‘bright’ or ‘troublesome’, interactions shift and the label can become an enduring part of the student’s identity, affecting performance. In answering OCR questions, you should be ready to discuss how internal processes work alongside external factors (material deprivation, parental attitudes).

Educational achievement gaps by class, gender and ethnicity are a recurrent exam focus. Girls now outperform boys at GCSE, but issues of subject choice and assertive masculinity remain. White working-class students, particularly boys, and some minority ethnic groups, such as Black Caribbean students, consistently underachieve relative to their peers. Explanations range from linguistic skills, family structure, teacher racism, ethnocentric curriculum and peer-group pressures. A thorough analysis must combine structural and interactionist insights.

7. Social Stratification |

Stratification refers to the hierarchical arrangement of groups in society based on factors like class, status and power. The Registrar General’s scale and the NS-SEC (National Statistics Socio-economic Classification) are used in the UK to measure social class. Candidates should be familiar with the main social classes: upper class, middle class, working class, and those in long-term poverty. Life chances – opportunities for health, education and wellbeing – are profoundly shaped by class position.

Weber’s multidimensional approach adds status and party (or power) to Marx’s purely economic definition of class. This helps explain why some groups, such as the aristocracy, may enjoy high status even if their wealth declines. Social mobility – movement between strata – can be upward or downward, and intragenerational or intergenerational. Despite the myth of an open society, research shows that the UK has relatively low levels of social mobility compared to other developed nations.

Poverty can be understood in absolute and relative terms. Absolute poverty means a lack of basic necessities like food and shelter; relative poverty means falling below the average standard of living in a particular society. The government uses measures such as the Household Below Average Income (HBAI) to track poverty. Sociologists distinguish between the ‘deserving’ and ‘undeserving’ poor – a distinction that has shaped welfare policy since the Poor Laws.

Theories of stratification also address gender and ethnicity. Feminists argue that patriarchy operates as a distinct system of stratification, while intersectionality explores how class, gender and ethnicity combine to create unique experiences of advantage and disadvantage. In the exam, you might be asked to explain why ethnic minorities are over-represented in low-paid, insecure work, linking stratification to concepts like structural racism and discrimination.

8. Crime and Deviance |

Deviance refers to behaviour that violates social norms, while crime is behaviour that breaks formal laws. Something can be deviant but not criminal (e.g. talking loudly in a library), or criminal but not necessarily widely seen as deviant (e.g. speeding). The relativity of deviance is crucial: what is considered deviant varies across cultures and historical periods. This topic requires you to understand that crime statistics are socially constructed – they reflect decisions by police, courts and the public rather than an objective picture of offending.

Functionalists posit that crime can serve positive functions for society. Durkheim argued that limited levels of crime help to clarify moral boundaries and strengthen social cohesion through collective condemnation. Merton’s strain theory explains crime as a result of the gap between society’s cultural goals (wealth, success) and the institutionalised means to achieve them. When legitimate paths are blocked, individuals may innovate, ritualise, retreat or rebel. These anomic reactions generate different forms of deviance.

Subcultural theories build on Merton, explaining why deviance can become a collective response. Albert Cohen studied working-class boys who experienced status frustration at school and turned to delinquent subcultures for alternative status. Cloward and Ohlin distinguished between criminal, conflict and retreatist subcultures, depending on the legitimate and illegitimate opportunity structures available. These explanations remain relevant to understanding gang involvement and youth offending today.

Labelling theory shifts the focus from the offender to the reactors. Becker argued that no act is inherently deviant; it becomes deviant only when labelled as such. The differential enforcement of the law – where some groups are more likely to be stopped, searched, arrested and convicted – reflects power imbalances. This perspective connects crime to stratification, as the powerful can impose definitions of deviance on the less powerful. Marxists add that ruling-class crimes (corporate and white-collar) are often under-policed, while working-class street crimes are over-policed.

Patterns of offending show clear variations by age, gender, ethnicity and class. Young males are statistically more likely to be offenders and victims of violent crime. The chivalry thesis and double deviance debate explore gendered experiences of the criminal justice system. Ethnic disparities in stop-and-search and custodial sentences remain deeply contested. In revision, ensure you can explain these patterns using a range of theoretical approaches, not a single-cause narrative.
