1. Aristotle’s Six Elements of Drama |

Plot (mythos): The arrangement of incidents; the ‘soul’ of tragedy. A unified action with a beginning, middle and end.

Character (ethos): The moral qualities and motivations of the agents. Character supports plot; it is revealed through choices.

Thought (dianoia): The themes, arguments and ideas of the play – what the characters say and prove.

Diction (lexis): The expression of meaning through words; the quality of speech, including metaphor and rhythm.

Music (melos): All auditory elements – rhythm, melody, chorus singing. Enhances emotional response.

Spectacle (opsis): The visual aspects – set, costume, lighting, blocking. The least artistic but emotionally impactful.

2. Stanislavski’s System: Core Equations |

Super-objective + Through-line of Action: The character’s overarching goal drives every scene. Every unit of action has a micro-objective that feeds the spine.

Given Circumstances: The facts of the world – time, place, relationships, social background. The actor asks: ‘What would I do if I were in these circumstances?’

Emotion Memory: Recalling personal past experiences to trigger genuine feelings analogous to the character’s. Used sparingly to avoid hysteria.

Magic If: The imaginative leap – ‘What if this situation were real?’ Transforms the fictional into truthful action.

Circles of Attention: A technique to focus energy – from the self, to the immediate partner, to the whole stage. Eliminates audience-induced tension.

3. Brecht’s Epic Theatre & The ‘A-Effect’ |

Verfremdungseffekt (Alienation Effect): The formula V = R + S – Recognition disrupted by Strangeness. The familiar is made unfamiliar to provoke critical thought, not empathy.

Gestus: A physical stance, gesture or tableau that encapsulates a social relationship or attitude. It shows, not becomes – revealing the social gesture of a moment.

Historicisation: Events are presented as products of a specific historical moment, not human nature. Reminds the audience that things can change.

Epic Structure: Episodic scenes, often separated by songs, narration or captions. Breaks illusionistic flow, encouraging analytical distance.

4. Grotowski’s Poor Theatre: Actor-Spectator Formula |

Via Negativa: The actor strips away rather than adds – eliminating blocks, masks and cliches to reveal pure impulse. Technique is a process of subtraction.

Actor–Spectator Relationship: Theatre is what happens between the actor and the spectator. Everything else – lights, costume, set – can be discarded (poor theatre).

Holy Actor: The performer undergoes a total act of self-penetration, offering their deepest psyche – a secular holiness that transforms the audience.

5. Peter Brook’s Empty Space & Immediate Theatre |

The Empty Space Formula: ‘I can take any empty space and call it a bare stage. A man walks across this empty space whilst someone else is watching him, and this is all that is needed for an act of theatre to be engaged.’

Deadly Theatre: Repetitious, predictable, museum-like production that lacks connection to the present. Avoid it by questioning every convention.

Immediate Theatre: Live performance that creates a unique, irreplaceable connection each night – an event in the here and now.

6. The Three-Act Structure Theorem |

Act I: Setup – Introduces the world, protagonist and their desire. The inciting incident at the end destroys equilibrium and launches the dramatic question.

Act II: Confrontation – The longest act. Rising obstacles, complications and a midpoint reversal. Ends with a crisis or ‘dark night of the soul’ leading to climax.

Act III: Resolution – Climax answers the dramatic question; denouement shows the new equilibrium. Catharsis for tragedy, celebration for comedy.

7. Freytag’s Pyramid: Dramatic Tension Formula |

Exposition → Rising Action → Climax → Falling Action → Denouement. Tension (T) builds with each reversal and recognition, peaking at the climax.

Catastrophe: In tragedy, the final resolution brings suffering and emotional cleansing (catharsis). In modern plays, the pyramid may be inverted or fragmented.

8. Stage Composition: Spatial Dynamics ‘Formula’ |

The Nine-Zone Grid: Divide the stage into upstage/downstage and left/centre/right. Downstage centre (DC) carries most power; upstage left (UL) least focus. Use diagonals and triangles for dynamic tension.

Levels & Proximity: Height = status or psychological intensity. Close proximity = intimacy or confrontation; distance = isolation or alienation. Apply proxemics mathematically.

Strong stage positions: The character facing front, body open, centre stage, elevated – holds the highest focus value. The stage picture should read like a painting.

9. Character Arc Equation |

Character Change (ΔC) = Obstacle × Pressure + Revelation – Fear. The protagonist’s transformation follows the action; a static character serves as a foil.

Subtext: The unspoken thoughts beneath the lines. Depth score = (Text + Action + Pause) / Spoken words. What is not said often carries the truest meaning.

Status Transactions: Every line shifts relative status (High/Low). A play is a series of status battles mapped on a graph of power.

10. Lighting Design Formulae |

McCandless’ Rule: Each acting area illuminated by two fixtures at 45° above and 90° apart. Warm from one side, cool from the other – sculpts natural dimensionality.

Key : Fill Ratio: Key light provides primary illumination; fill light reduces shadows. Typical ratio 2:1 for drama, 1:1 for comedy. Low key = high tension.

Colour Psychology: Red = danger/passion, blue = cold/tranquillity, green = envy/sickness. Use complementary colours (e.g. cyan + amber) for shadow magic.

11. Sound Design: Acoustic Equations |

Diegetic vs Non-diegetic: Sound originating from the world of the play (footsteps, radio) vs. score added for the audience only. The boundary can be blurred for effect.

Volume Arc: Build volume (dB) to increase tension; sudden silence (negative dB spike) shock. Use sound bridges to link scenes smoothly.

Reverb Time (RT60): The time for sound to decay by 60 dB. Long reverb = vast, eerie space (church); short = intimate, dry (small room). Apply to set atmosphere.

12. Devising Formula: From Stimulus to Performance |

Fricative DNA: Start with stimulus (image, poem, object). Use Frantic Assembly’s building blocks: physical lifts, chair duets, round-by-through methodology.

D.I.C.E Formula: Discover → Improvise → Craft → Edit. Generate material freely, then shape with precise dramaturgy.

Actor’s Notebook Log: Record ‘What worked? Why? What is the next question?’ after each exploration. Every devising session should generate a new proposition.
