1. Foundational Historical Concepts |

Historiography is the study of how history is written and interpreted over time. Think of it as ‘the history of history’ – it examines different schools of thought and the changing methods historians use.

A primary source is a piece of evidence produced during the period you are studying, such as a diary, letter, photograph, or government document. Remember: ‘primary’ means ‘first-hand’.

巧记:“primary(一手)”即“第一手”资料。

A secondary source is created later by historians who interpret primary evidence, for example, textbooks or monographs. Use the phrase ‘second-hand’ to recall that secondary sources rely on other sources.

Evidence is the raw material historians use to construct arguments; it can be drawn from both primary and secondary sources. Strong A-Level essays deploy specific, named evidence rather than general statements.

An interpretation in history refers to a historian’s particular view or argument about the past. Edexcel exams frequently ask you to analyse and evaluate differing interpretations, explaining why historians disagree.

2. Source Analysis Terminology |

Provenance means the origin or source of a document – who created it, when, where and for what purpose. Use the mnemonic ‘POWW’ (Purpose, Origin, When, Why) to quickly check provenance.

Reliability asks whether you can trust the content of a source. A source might be unreliable because of bias, exaggeration, or lack of knowledge. Do not confuse reliability with usefulness.

Utility, or usefulness, relates to how helpful a source is for a particular enquiry, regardless of its reliability. Even a biased source can be useful for revealing the author’s perspective.

Corroboration occurs when two or more sources agree on a point, strengthening the evidence. To corroborate is to ‘strengthen together’ – think of ‘co’ + ‘robor’ (Latin for strength).

Bias involves a one-sided perspective that
