1. Understanding the Edexcel A-Level Philosophy Specification | 理解 Edexcel A-Level 哲学教学大纲

The Pearson Edexcel A-Level Philosophy qualification consists of three externally assessed written exams, each lasting 2 hours. All exams are taken at the end of the two-year course. Paper 1 covers Philosophy of Religion, Paper 2 covers Ethics, and Paper 3 covers Philosophical Issues. Each paper is worth 33.3% of the total A-Level. Students must answer all questions, which include short-answer definitions, longer analysis questions, and essay-style evaluations. Familiarising yourself with this structure helps you track what your child is studying at any given time.

The specification also requires students to engage with primary texts, such as works by Plato, Aristotle, Hume, Kant, and contemporary philosophers. While your child will study extracts, you can support their comprehension by discussing the main ideas and encouraging them to summarise arguments in their own words.

2. The Three Key Components: An Overview |

Component 1, Philosophy of Religion, examines arguments for the existence of God (design, cosmological, ontological), the problem of evil, religious experience, and religious language. Component 2, Ethics, covers normative ethical theories (utilitarianism, Kantian deontology, Aristotelian virtue ethics), meta-ethics, and applied issues such as medical ethics and animal rights. Component 3, Philosophical Issues, explores the nature of reality, the mind–body problem, free will and determinism, and the limits of knowledge. Being aware of these topics enables you to ask targeted questions about what is being covered each term.

3. Philosophy of Religion: Key Arguments and Challenges |

Your child will need to understand the structure of the teleological (design) argument, as presented by Paley and Hume’s criticisms. To help, ask them to explain the analogy between a watch and the universe, and then ask why Hume thought the analogy was weak. This questioning technique reinforces logical analysis without requiring you to be an expert.

Similarly, the cosmological argument seeks a first cause or necessary being. Encourage your child to articulate Aquinas’s Five Ways and the objections from David Hume and Bertrand Russell. Drawing diagrams of infinite regress and necessary existence can make abstract concepts more concrete.

The ontological argument, proposed by Anselm and reformed by Descartes, argues that existence is a predicate of a perfect being. Help your child evaluate Gaunilo’s ‘Lost Island’ parody and Kant’s objection that existence is not a predicate. Use simple examples like ‘a hundred thalers’ to clarify.

The problem of evil and suffering challenges the existence of a perfectly good and omnipotent God. Students must study the theodicies of Irenaeus and Augustine. Discuss with your child how these theodicies differ in explaining moral and natural evil, and whether they provide a satisfying response.

4. Ethics: Theories and Applied Dilemmas |

Utilitarianism, associated with Bentham’s hedonic calculus and Mill’s higher pleasures, is a common focus. Ask your child to evaluate the strengths of utilitarianism (e.g., impartiality, flexibility) and its weaknesses (e.g., the tyranny of the majority, the problem of calculating consequences). You can use everyday ethical dilemmas, like trolley problems, to spark discussion.

Kantian deontology emphasises duty and the categorical imperative. Encourage your child to test maxims using the universalisation test and the principle of treating humanity as an end. Discuss real-world cases like lying to save a friend to see how Kant’s theory might be applied.

Virtue ethics, rooted in Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics, focuses on character and flourishing (eudaimonia). Help your child reflect on the concept of the Golden Mean and the role of practical wisdom (phronesis). Ask them to compare how a virtue ethicist and a utilitarian would approach environmental ethics.

Meta-ethics examines the nature of moral language. Your child will encounter cognitivism, non-cognitivism, naturalism, and the open-question argument. You can support by discussing the meaning of the word ‘good’ and whether moral statements can be true or false, just like scientific statements.

5. Philosophical Issues: Free Will, Mind, and Knowledge |

The free will debate asks whether human actions are determined by prior causes. Your child must learn the positions of hard determinism, libertarianism, and compatibilism. Discuss everyday examples, like whether a student ‘could have done otherwise’ when not completing homework, to make the theories tangible.

The mind–body problem explores the relationship between consciousness and the physical brain. Dualism, substance dualism (Descartes), property dualism, and physicalist theories (such as behaviourism, identity theory, and functionalism) feature prominently. Try creating simple analogy stories or thought experiments like the ‘Mary the colour scientist’ to help your child distinguish between these views.

Epistemology questions what knowledge is and how it is acquired. The tripartite definition of knowledge (justified true belief) and Gettier cases are core. Your child must also evaluate the role of perception, reason, and testimony. Ask them to explain a Gettier-style counterexample and why it poses a problem.

6. Developing Critical Thinking and Analysis Skills |

Philosophy is less about memorising facts and more about evaluating arguments. Encourage your child to identify premises and conclusions in everything they read. You can practise together by picking a news editorial and asking: What is being claimed? What reasons are given? Is the reasoning valid or sound?

Help them recognise common fallacies such as begging the question, false dichotomy, and straw man. When discussing homework, ask whether an opponent’s view is being represented fairly. This builds intellectual charity and stronger analytical writing.

7. Mastering Essay Writing: Structure and Evaluation |

A-level philosophy essays require a clear introduction, well-developed paragraphs, and a balanced conclusion. Teach your child the ‘PEEL’ structure: Point, Evidence/Example, Explanation, Link. Each paragraph should develop one sub-argument. You can review a draft by checking whether each paragraph addresses a specific aspect of the question and contains critical evaluation, not just description.
