1. The Core Formula of Democracy |

Democracy is best understood as a function of three interdependent variables. When any one of these elements weakens, the quality of democracy declines.

Democracy = Participation + Accountability + Protected Rights

  • Participation (Input legitimacy): free and fair elections, referendums, pressure group activity.
  • Accountability (Output legitimacy): ministerial responsibility, parliamentary scrutiny, judicial review.
  • Protected Rights: rule of law, Human Rights Act 1998, constitutional limits on power.

2. The Legitimacy Equation |

Legitimacy — the right to rule — transforms mere power into authority. Without it, governments rely increasingly on coercion, which is inherently unstable.

Legitimacy = Legal-Rational Authority + Consent + Performance

  • Legal-Rational Authority (Weber): power is exercised through established laws and procedures, not personal status.
  • Consent: demonstrated through elections, low levels of civil disobedience, tacit acceptance.
  • Performance: economic growth, public service delivery, maintenance of order.

3. Duverger’s Law |

Duverger’s law connects a country’s electoral system to its party system. It is a foundational proposition for comparing FPTP in the UK with more proportional systems.

Single-Member Plurality (FPTP) → Two-Party System Tendency

  • Mechanical effect: small parties win few seats because support is geographically dispersed, not concentrated.
  • Psychological effect: voters avoid ‘wasting’ their vote on a likely loser, leading to tactical voting.
  • UK evidence: Labour and Conservative dominance since 1920s; however, devolved elections using AMS/STV produce multiparty outcomes, supporting the law.

4. The Iron Law of Oligarchy |

Roberto Michels argued that all organisations, even those committed to democratic ideals, inevitably concentrate power in the hands of a small leadership elite.

Organisation → Hierarchy → Oligarchy

  • Necessity of leadership: large-scale organisation requires specialisation, a division of labour, and full-time officials with expert knowledge.
  • Goal displacement: leaders become more concerned with preserving their own positions than with advancing members’ original aims.
  • Application to political parties: Labour’s parliamentary leadership vs. grassroots membership; the power of the executive in most modern parties.

5. The Median Voter Theorem |

This spatial model predicts that in a two-party system, parties will converge toward the ideological centre to maximise their vote share.

Party Position → Median Voter Preference

  • Assumption: voters are distributed along a single left–right spectrum, and they vote for the party closest to their own position.
  • Implication: extreme ideological positioning by a major party will cede the centre ground to the opponent.
  • UK example: New Labour’s shift to the centre in 1997; Conservatives’ adoption of more centrist economic policies under Cameron.

6. The Westminster Model Formula |

The traditional UK constitution is underpinned by a distinctive combination of principles that together constitute the Westminster model of government.

Westminster Model = Parliamentary Sovereignty + Rule of Law + Constitutional Conventions + Unitary State

  • Parliamentary sovereignty: Parliament is the supreme legal authority; no Parliament can bind its successors.
  • Rule of law (Dicey): no one is above the law; rights are secured through ordinary legal remedies.
  • Constitutional conventions: non-legal rules that regulate monarch’s powers (e.g. royal assent), ministerial responsibility, collective cabinet responsibility.
  • Unitary state: power is concentrated at the centre; devolution has modified but not abolished this principle.

7. The Separation of Powers Equation |

The separation of powers is a constitutional mechanism designed to prevent tyranny by dispersing state authority across three distinct branches.

Liberty ≈ Legislative ≠ Executive ≠ Judiciary + Checks and Balances

  • US model: strict separation — Congress, President, Supreme Court are constitutionally separate, with personnel forbidden from serving in more than one branch.
  • UK model: fused powers — executive is drawn from the legislature; however, the Constitutional Reform Act 2005 created a clearer judicial separation through the Supreme Court.
  • Checks and balances: each branch has powers to limit the others (e.g. presidential veto, legislative override, judicial review).

8. Judicial Review Theorem |

Judicial review is the power of courts to assess whether actions by the executive or legislature are compatible with a higher legal standard — either a codified constitution or, in the UK, fundamental common-law principles.

Ultra Vires + Unreasonableness + Procedural Impropriety → Grounds for Review

  • Ultra vires: a public body acts beyond its legal powers.
  • Unreasonableness (Wednesbury unreasonableness): a decision so irrational that no reasonable authority would have made it.
  • Procedural impropriety: failure to follow fair procedures, such as consulting affected parties or avoiding bias.
  • In the US: judicial review is anchored in Marbury v. Madison (1803); courts can strike down legislation as unconstitutional.

9. The Political Spectrum Formula |

Political positions can be mapped on more than one axis, providing a richer analysis than the simple left–right spectrum alone.

Ideological Position = Economic (Left–Right) + Social (Libertarian–Authoritarian)

Authoritarian Left State control Traditional values, strong state Stalinism
Authoritarian Right Free market, hierarchy Strict order, nationalism Fascism
Libertarian Left Cooperative, egalitarian Maximal personal freedom Anarcho-syndicalism
Libertarian Right Laissez-faire capitalism Minimal state intervention Classical liberalism

10. The Globalisation Trilemma |

Dani Rodrik’s trilemma asserts that it is impossible to simultaneously have deep economic globalisation, national sovereignty, and democratic politics; at most two can be achieved.

Hyperglobalisation ∩ National Sovereignty ∩ Democratic Politics = ∅

  • Choice 1 – Golden Straitjacket: accept global economic rules and constrain domestic policy choices, weakening democratic accountability.
  • Choice 2 – Bremerton/sovereignty focus: erect barriers to globalisation to restore national democratic control (e.g. Brexit arguments).
  • Choice 3 – Democratic global governance: move decision-making to supranational bodies, but at the cost of national sovereignty.

11. Realist Power Formula |

In global politics, realists measure state power in terms of observable capabilities that allow a state to influence others and secure its national interest.

National Power = (Economic Capability + Military Capability) × Soft Power × Resolve

  • Hard power: GDP, defence spending, nuclear arsenal, energy independence.
  • Soft power (Nye): cultural appeal, diplomatic influence, leadership in international institutions.
  • Resolve: the willingness of a state to use its capabilities; resolves can signal weakness and alter power calculations.

12. The Electoral Swing Formula |

Swing is the standard measure for analysing change in party support between elections, crucial for understanding both UK general elections and US presidential races.

Swing = (Change in Party A% + Change in Party B%) ÷ 2

  • Two-party swing: conventionally calculated between the two largest parties (e.g. Conservative and Labour).
  • Interpretation: a uniform swing of x% from party A to party B implies that across all constituencies, A’s vote falls by x percentage points and B’s rises by the same amount.
  • Seat prediction: By applying swing to marginal seats, analysts estimate how many constituencies will change hands.
  • US variation: swing state analysis focuses on states where the margin of victory is small; a small national swing can tip the Electoral College.
