📚 AS CAIE Geography: Case Study Practical Drill | AS CAIE

Mastering case studies is the backbone of success in AS CAIE Geography. This article provides a hands-on drill, demonstrating how to analyse, structure, and apply detailed examples across the syllabus. You’ll learn to move beyond simple description to achieve high-level evaluation marks.

1. Understanding Assessment Objectives |

CAIE exam questions test four key assessment objectives (AOs). AO1 requires recall of factual knowledge and case study detail. AO2 demands understanding of geographical concepts and processes in context.

AO3 assesses your ability to apply knowledge and analyse patterns, relationships, and causes. AO4 is the highest skill, focusing on evaluation, judgement, and drawing balanced conclusions about management strategies or future scenarios.

Command words such as ‘assess’, ‘evaluate’, and ‘to what extent’ signal the need for AO4 thinking. Always link your case study evidence back to the question’s exact demand.

2. Core Elements of a Strong Case Study |

Every high-scoring case study answer revolves around five essential components. You must present them clearly to demonstrate depth and analytical skill.

  • Location and background: Pinpoint the area with a map reference or a description of its relative location. Include spatial scale (local, regional, national) and relevant demographic or physical data.
  • Causes and processes: Explain the reasons behind the phenomenon. For physical geography, describe geomorphic or atmospheric processes; for human geography, identify economic, social, or political drivers.
  • Impacts (S-E-E): Categorise consequences into social, economic, and environmental dimensions. Use specific statistics, names of places, or dates to add credibility.
  • Responses and management: Detail the strategies implemented at various scales. Distinguish between short-term relief and long-term planning. |
  • Evaluation: Judge the success or failure of responses. Consider cost-effectiveness, sustainability, conflicting stakeholder views, and unintended consequences.

3. Case Study Drill 1 – Ageing Population in Japan |

Japan offers a textbook example of demographic transition in a highly developed nation. The proportion of people aged 65 and over reached 29.1% in 2021, the highest in the world.

The causes are long-term low birth rates (total fertility rate around 1.3) and high life expectancy (84.6 years). Social factors include women prioritising careers, high childcare costs, and a decline in marriage rates. Economic factors push couples to have fewer children.

Impacts are severe. Economically, the shrinking working-age population (down 17% from 1995) strains the pension system and creates labour shortages. Socially, the ‘silver tsunami’ increases the demand for healthcare and elderly care facilities. Many rural areas face depopulation as the young migrate to cities.

Government responses include raising the pension age, promoting ‘womenomics’ to increase female labour force participation, and investing in robotics to supplement care workers. Some small towns offer free housing to attract young families. However, evaluation shows these measures only partially offset the demographic deficit because they do not fundamentally reverse the low fertility trend.

4. Case Study Drill 2 – International Migration: Mexico to USA |

The Mexico–USA migration stream is one of the longest sustained cross-border movements in the world. Over 11 million Mexican-born individuals resided in the USA as of 2019, highlighting the scale of this flow.

Push and pull factors operate at multiple levels. Use the table below to organise key drivers:

Factor / 因素 Push from Mexico / 从墨西哥的推力 Pull to USA / 向美国的拉力
Economic / 经济 Low wages (avg. $4/hr in rural areas), high unemployment Higher wages (avg. $12/hr in agriculture), demand for low-skilled labour
Social / 社会 Poor healthcare and education in border regions Established Mexican diaspora communities, better schools
Political / 政治 Local corruption, cartel violence in states like Michoacán Relative political stability, family reunification policies

Impacts on the USA include a flexible labour supply and enriched cultural diversity, but also strains on public services in border states and political backlash. For Mexico, remittances exceeded $58 billion in 2022, a vital economic lifeline. Yet, the loss of working-age adults causes long-term dependency ratios to rise and can fracture families.

5. Case Study Drill 3 – Coastal Management: Holderness Coast |

The Holderness coastline in East Yorkshire, UK, is the fastest-eroding shoreline in Europe, with an average retreat rate of 2 metres per year. The underlying geology of soft boulder clay makes it extremely vulnerable to hydraulic action and abrasion.

Key impacts include the loss of farmland and properties, such as the famous disappearance of villages like Old Kilnsea, and the threat to infrastructure like the B1242 road. The gas terminal at Easington, which supplies 25% of the UK’s gas, lies only 25 metres from the cliff edge.

Management strategies are contested. Hard engineering schemes, such as the sea wall and groynes at Mappleton, have successfully protected the village but accelerated downdrift erosion at Great Cowden by 40%. This phenomenon is known as terminal groyne syndrome.

An Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) approach, known as the Holderness Coast Shoreline Management Plan, recommends ‘hold the line’ at economically vital sites like Easington but ‘no active intervention’ in less populated areas. Evaluation shows this creates conflicts between local residents who want protection and environmental agencies prioritising coastal realignment and the creation of intertidal habitats.

6. Case Study Drill 4 – Urban Challenges in Rio de Janeiro |

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s second-largest city, vividly illustrates the challenges of rapid urbanisation in an emerging country. Around 22% of its 6.7 million urban inhabitants live in favelas, informal settlements often perched on steep hillsides.

The causes of favela growth include uncontrolled rural-to-urban migration, historic lack of affordable housing, and deeply unequal land distribution. Rocinha, the largest favela, houses over 70,000 people in overcrowded conditions with narrow, unsanitary alleyways.

Impacts include severe social inequality, high crime rates linked to drug gangs, and environmental issues such as landslides during heavy storms due to deforestation on slopes. Transport congestion is acute, with average commute times exceeding 2 hours for many residents in the North Zone.

Responses have evolved. The Favela-Bairro Programme upgraded services like water, sanitation, and paved roads, demonstrating a shift from slum clearance to in-situ improvement. The iconic cable car system in Complexo do Alemão symbolised this integration. Evaluation reveals mixed success: while physical upgrades improved daily life, social integration and formal employment remained limited, and maintenance of new infrastructure is often poor.

7. Case Study Drill 5 – Tropical Cyclone Management: Typhoon Haiyan |

Typhoon Haiyan (local name Yolanda) struck the Philippines in November 2013 as a Category 5 super typhoon. Sustained winds reached 315 km/h, making it one of the strongest storms ever to make landfall.

The primary social impacts were catastrophic: over 6,300 deaths, 4 million displaced, and the obliteration of whole towns like Tacloban due to a 5-metre storm surge. Economic losses were estimated at $2.86 billion, devastating the coconut and rice farming sectors. Environmentally, mangroves were torn up and coral reefs suffered severe turbidity damage.

Short-term responses included international aid pouring in, with emergency food and shelter provided by the UN and NGOs like Oxfam. The long-term response focused on ‘build back better’, with stronger housing designs, improved storm surge warning systems, and a new no-build zone along the most vulnerable coastlines.

Evaluation of management reveals that while the early warning system was activated, many residents did not understand the term ‘storm surge’, leading to inadequate evacuation. The recovery was also slowed by corruption and the remote location of some islands. The drill lesson here is that effective management depends as much on public education and governance as on technology.

8. Structuring Your Answer: The PEEL Framework | 构建答案:PEEL框架

To transform case study facts into analysis, adopt the PEEL structure for each paragraph: Point, Evidence, Explanation, and Link. This elevates your writing from narrative to critical argument.

Point: Start with a clear, topic-driven statement. For example, ‘Holderness management has created significant unintended consequences.’ Evidence: Insert precise place-specific data, such as ‘the groynes at Mappleton trapped sediment, starving Great Cowden of beach material and increasing erosion to 3.5 m/yr.’

Explanation: Develop the ‘so what?’ by explaining the underlying process or linking causes and effects. ‘This illustrates how sediment cell disruption propagates downdrift, creating spatial trade-offs.’ Link: Conclude by answering the question or tying back to the broader concept, e.g., ‘Therefore, the cost of protecting one settlement was the sacrifice of another, questioning the sustainability of piecemeal engineering.’

9. Common Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them | 常见错误及避免方法

Many students lose marks by listing facts without framing them analytically. A ‘shopping list’ of management strategies is not evaluation.

Another pitfall is using vague language like ‘many people were affected’ or ‘the government helped.’ Always replace these with quantified data: ‘Over 4 million people were displaced, and the UN provided 1.2 million food packs within the first month.’

Lack of balance is also costly. When asked ‘to what extent’, you must present both sides before delivering a clear judgement. Do not just describe success; admit limitations such as high maintenance costs, political opposition, or time lags.

Finally, avoid ‘borrowing’ the same case study for all questions in a real exam. Your answer must be tailored to the command word, not pre-canned. Practice adapting your knowledge flexibly.

10. DIY Practice: Applying the Drill to Your Own Example |

Select a fresh case study from the syllabus you haven’t fully mastered, such as a river landform (e.g., the Three Gorges Dam) or an urban regeneration project (e.g., London Docklands). Now, create a one-page revision card.

On the card, write bullet points for location, causes/processes, S-E-E impacts, management, and a one-sentence evaluation. Then, write a full paragraph using the PEEL structure in response to this typical CAIE question: ‘Assess the success of management in your chosen case study.’

Time yourself: aim for 10 minutes of planning and 15 minutes of writing. Afterwards, check you have used at least three pieces of concrete evidence and have explicitly addressed both sides of the argument. This active recall drill embeds the case study far more effectively than passive reading.
