1. What is Knowledge? |

In epistemology, the traditional starting point is the question ‘What does it mean to know something?’ Most philosophical discussions begin with propositional knowledge (knowing that something is the case) rather than acquaintance knowledge or practical knowledge. A classic analysis attempts to give necessary and sufficient conditions for a person S to know a proposition P.

The analysis most students encounter first is the tripartite definition: knowledge is justified true belief (JTB). This means that S knows that P if and only if: (1) S believes that P, (2) P is true, and (3) S is justified in believing that P. Each condition is taken to be necessary and, together, jointly sufficient.

2. The Tripartite Definition and Its Conditions |

The belief condition rules out cases where a person simply guesses correctly without actually holding the belief. The truth condition ensures that knowledge is factive – you cannot know something false. The justification condition aims to distinguish knowledge from lucky true beliefs; it requires that the believer has good reasons or evidence.

Philosophers have debated the nature of justification. Foundationalism claims some beliefs are basic and justify others, while coherentism argues that beliefs are justified by their mutual coherence within a system. Internalism holds that justification depends on factors inside the subject’s mind, whereas externalism allows justification to depend on reliable processes the subject may not be aware of.

3. Gettier’s Challenge |

In 1963, Edmund Gettier published a short paper demonstrating that JTB is not sufficient for knowledge. He constructed counterexamples where a person has a justified true belief but intuitively does not know. One style involves inference from a justified false belief to a true conclusion by luck. For instance, Smith has strong evidence that Jones owns a Ford. From this he justifiably believes ‘Jones owns a Ford or Brown is in Barcelona.’ It turns out Jones does not own a Ford, but by coincidence Brown is in Barcelona. Smith’s belief is justified and true, yet we would not say he knows it.

Gettier cases reveal that justification and truth can come apart in a lucky way. Since then, epistemologists have tried to add a fourth condition or replace justification entirely to exclude these lucky true beliefs.

4. Responses to Gettier: No False Lemmas and Reliabilism |

One early response is the no false lemmas condition: knowledge is justified true belief that is not inferred from any false proposition. In the Smith case, the inference relies on the false lemma ‘Jones owns a Ford,’ so the condition would rule it out. However, some have proposed cases where no false lemma is involved, yet knowledge seems absent.

Reliabilism takes an externalist approach: a belief counts as knowledge if it is true and produced by a reliable cognitive process, whether or not the subject has access to reasons. A reliable process is one that tends to produce true beliefs, like perception or memory in normal conditions. Reliabilism handles standard Gettier cases because the lucky connection is not typically generated by a reliable process. Yet it faces challenges, such as the generality problem (how to individuate processes) and cases where a reliable process is accidentally reliable in a specific environment.

5. Perception: Direct vs Indirect Realism |

Perception is a fundamental source of knowledge about the external world. Direct realism asserts that we perceive physical objects directly without any intermediary. When you look at a tree, you are directly aware of the tree itself. This view faces the argument from illusion: if a stick appears bent in water, you are perceiving something that is not the actual property of the stick, suggesting you are directly aware of a sense-datum, not the object.

Indirect realism thus holds that we perceive physical objects via mental intermediaries (sense-data). Locke’s representative realism distinguishes primary qualities (shape, size, motion) that resemble the object from secondary qualities (colour, taste, sound) that do not. The main problem for indirect realism is scepticism about the external world: if we only ever access sense-data, how can we know that physical objects resemble them or even exist? Berkeley’s idealism eliminates the physical world entirely, arguing that objects are collections of ideas.

6. Scepticism and Responses |

Philosophical scepticism about knowledge questions whether we can have any knowledge at all. Global scepticism employs scenarios like the brain in a vat or Descartes’ evil demon to suggest that all our experiences could be deceptive. The sceptical argument typically runs: (1) If I know that P (e.g., I have hands), then I know that I am not a brain in a vat. (2) I do not know that I am not a brain in a vat. (3) Therefore, I do not know that P.

Responses include Moore’s common-sense argument, which simply reverses the reasoning: I do know I have hands, so I can know I am not a brain in a vat. Contextualism argues that knowledge claims are true relative to everyday contexts but may be false in philosophical sceptical contexts. Reliabilism can respond that our perceptual processes are reliable in our actual environment, even if they would fail in sceptical worlds.

7. Utilitarianism: The Greatest Happiness Principle |

Normative ethics asks how we ought to act. Utilitarianism is a consequentialist theory holding that the right action is the one that maximises overall happiness or utility. Classical utilitarianism, as developed by Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill, is hedonistic: it equates utility with pleasure and the absence of pain. Bentham proposed an impartial calculus considering intensity, duration, certainty etc. Mill introduced the distinction between higher and lower pleasures, famously claiming it is ‘better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied.’

Act utilitarianism applies the principle directly to individual acts, while rule utilitarianism evaluates the utility of following general rules. Both face objections: act utilitarianism seems to permit injustices (punishing an innocent if it produces greater overall happiness), and rule utilitarianism may collapse into act utilitarianism or generate irrational rule-following.

8. Kantian Deontology |

Immanuel Kant’s deontological ethics is based on the idea that morality is grounded in reason and duty, not in consequences. The core is the Categorical Imperative, an unconditional moral command. Kant provides several formulations. The Formula of Universal Law: ‘Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law.’ This tests moral rules by consistency: if a maxim leads to a contradiction in conception or in will when universalised, it is impermissible.

The Formula of Humanity requires that we treat humanity, whether in ourselves or others, always as an end in itself and never merely as a means. This grounds the absolute prohibition against using people, such as in lying or deception. Kant’s theory respects autonomy and the intrinsic worth of rational beings, but critics argue it is too rigid—it seems to forbid lying even to save a life—and its formal nature can be manipulated by contriving maxims.

9. Aristotle’s Virtue Ethics |

Virtue ethics focuses on character rather than rules or consequences. Aristotle’s version, developed in the Nicomachean Ethics, asks what the good life (eudaimonia) consists in and what virtues a person needs to flourish. Eudemonia is not a subjective feeling but an objective state of rational activity in accordance with virtue. Virtues are character traits that enable us to live well.

The doctrine of the mean holds that a virtue is a disposition to choose the intermediate between excess and deficiency in emotions and actions. For example, courage is the mean between cowardice and rashness. This is not a strict arithmetic mean but relative to the individual and the situation, to be determined by practical wisdom (phronesis). Critics note the doctrine is vague, may not apply to all virtues (e.g., justice), and provides insufficient action-guidance in moral dilemmas.

10. Meta-ethics: Cognitivism vs Non-Cognitivism |

Meta-ethics examines what we are doing when we use moral language. Cognitivism holds that moral statements express beliefs that can be true or false. Moral realism, a form of cognitivism, claims there are mind-independent moral facts. Naturalism (e.g., utilitarianism as a naturalistic theory) identifies moral properties with natural properties like pleasure. Non-naturalism (Moore) argues that ‘good’ is a simple, non-natural property, and the naturalistic fallacy is committed when one tries to define it in natural terms. Error theory (Mackie) combines cognitivism with anti-realism: moral statements aim to state facts but all such statements are false because no objective moral values exist.

Non-cognitivism claims that moral utterances do not express beliefs and are not truth-apt. Emotivism (Ayer, Stevenson) holds that moral statements express emotional attitudes or commands – ‘Murder is wrong’ essentially means ‘Boo to murder!’ Prescriptivism (Hare) argues that moral language prescribes universalisable actions, so ‘ought’ statements commend and guide choices. Non-cognitivism avoids the metaphysical burden of moral facts but struggles to explain moral reasoning, disagreement, and the logical behaviour of moral terms in complex sentences.

11. Applied Ethics: Abortion and Euthanasia |

In the CAIE AS course, students apply normative theories to practical issues. In the abortion debate, the moral status of the foetus is central. Conservative positions often appeal to the sanctity of life or the potential personhood argument; liberals emphasise women’s bodily autonomy and the distinction between a person and a potential person. Utilitarianism may focus on the balance of happiness versus suffering, while Kantian ethics might ask whether abortion treats any rational being merely as a means.

Regarding euthanasia, the distinction between active and passive euthanasia, and between voluntary, non-voluntary and involuntary, is crucial. Arguments for legalisation often cite the relief of suffering and respect for autonomy (dignity in dying). Objections include the slippery slope argument, the potential violation of the doctor’s role, and the sanctity of life principle. Virtue ethics might consider what a compassionate and wise person would do, while utilitarianism weighs the consequences.
