📚 A-Level CAIE Geography High-Scorer’s Experience Sharing | A-Level CAIE

Hi! I am a former A-Level student who achieved an A* in CAIE Geography (9696), and I’m here to share the strategies, mindsets, and practical tips that made the difference. Whether you are just starting your AS year or deep into A2 revision, this guide will help you organise your study, master exam techniques, and build the confidence needed to shine in your papers. Let’s dive in!

1. Know the Syllabus Inside Out | 把考纲吃透

The single most important step is to download the official Cambridge syllabus for 9696 and treat it as your revision checklist. I printed it and highlighted every point I initially felt shaky on. The syllabus tells you exactly what examiners can test, and there are no surprises if you’ve covered everything. Use the learning outcomes as self-assessment: can you explain each one without notes?

The syllabus is also your friend when time is tight. Focus on the ‘Case studies required’ boxes and the command words like ‘evaluate’ and ‘assess’. Knowing these will keep your answers precise and relevant. Don’t just read the content headings; study the assessment objectives (AO1, AO2, AO3) to understand how marks are awarded.

2. Master Command Words and Structure Your Answers |

Geography marks are often lost not because you don’t know the content, but because you answer the wrong question. Command words like ‘describe’, ‘explain’, ‘assess’ and ‘evaluate’ demand different responses. I created a poster with definitions: ‘Describe’ is about patterns or trends; ‘Explain’ requires reasons and processes; ‘Assess’ or ‘Evaluate’ forces you to weigh up importance or success, giving balanced arguments and a justified conclusion.

For 6-, 9-, and 15-mark questions especially, I used a mental template. For example, a 15-mark essay: start with a brief intro defining key terms, then build 2-3 well-developed paragraphs each with a clear point, evidence from a case study and explanation. End with an evaluation that weighs factors against each other, not just a summary. This consistent structure made high marks much more predictable.

3. Build a Case Study Bank with Rich Detail |

I cannot stress enough: generic examples won’t get you top marks. For each topic, I memorised 3–4 case studies with place-specific facts, figures, dates and named locations. Cramming place-names is not enough; you need to know the story behind them. My flashcards had categories: background, causes, impacts, management and evaluation of success.

For Physical Geography, I covered case studies like the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami (hazards), the Sahel drought (drylands), and Mississippi River management (flooding). For Human Geography, I used Shenzhen as a growth pole, migration from Mexico to the USA, and urban regeneration in Manchester. I always revised them by writing summaries from memory under timed conditions.

4. Active Recall and Spaced Repetition Beat Passive Reading |

Reading your textbook or notes over and over is a waste of precious time. Instead, I tested myself daily. After studying a sub-topic, I closed my book and wrote down everything I could remember on a blank sheet, then checked for gaps. This method, known as active recall, strengthened my memory much faster than highlighting ever did.

I also used spaced repetition. I’d review a case study 1 day after learning it, then 3 days, a week, and a month later. Apps like Anki helped, but a simple paper calendar with revision topics worked just as well. This distributed practice is proven by cognitive science to be far more effective for long-term retention.

5. Perfect Your Diagram and Data-Response Skills |

Many CAIE papers include photographs, maps, graphs and tables that you must interpret before writing. I practised by taking past paper resources and quickly annotating what I saw: trends, anomalies, flows, spatial patterns. For maps, I looked for scale, orientation, legend, and correlation with text. For graphs, I noted general direction, steepest changes, peaks and troughs, then linked these to theory.

Drawing simple annotated sketches can boost marks in 15-mark questions. I learned to draw quick diagrams such as the hydrological cycle for drainage basin questions, or a cross-section of a hot spot volcano for hazards. These sketches don’t need to be artworks, but they must be clear, labelled and integrated into the written argument.

6. Link Geographical Theories to Real-World Contexts |

A common mistake is treating theories like the Demographic Transition Model or Plate Tectonic Theory as abstract. To stand out, I connected every model to real-world examples and critiques. For the DTM, I noted countries that don’t fit perfectly, such as China’s rapid transition due to the one-child policy. For plate tectonics, I explained anomalies like intraplate earthquakes using the New Madrid case.

This contextualisation shows the examiner you aren’t merely memorising. Use phrases like ‘however, this theory is contested because…’ or ‘in the case of X, the model needs adaptation…’. For each topic, I kept a small ‘theory-critique’ log that I reviewed before mocks and the final exams.

7. Time Management and Exam Simulation |

Time is your biggest enemy in the Geography exam. The mark-per-minute rule is a good start: a 15-mark essay deserves roughly 18-20 minutes. I trained myself to never spend too long on a single question. I wore a wristwatch and set mini-deadlines: finish all Section A questions within the first 30 minutes for Paper 1, etc.

I completed at least 5 full past papers under strict timed conditions before my final exams, marking them fiercely using the mark scheme. Each time, I identified patterns in my mistakes, such as rushing the conclusion or missing place-specific details. I then practised those weak areas repeatedly until they became strengths.

8. The Power of Examiner-Focused Answers |

I used examiner reports from previous years to learn exactly what CAIE examiners praise and what they penalise. Common feedback includes: ‘too narrative, lacks analysis’, ‘generic case study knowledge’, ‘not enough place-specific reference’. I turned these into a checklist and mentally ticked them as I wrote each practice answer.

For example, to avoid the ‘too narrative’ trap, I always included a sentence that explicitly analyses, such as ‘This illustrates the vulnerability of coastal communities due to both economic dependency and poor preparedness, which can be modelled by the Pressure and Release (PAR) model.’ Such explicit theorisation lifted my grade.

9. Effective Note-Taking for Long-Term Memory |

I experimented with many note styles and settled on a hybrid: mind maps for broad topics, and Cornell-style notes for detailed case studies. For mind maps, I placed the core concept (e.g., ‘Tropical Cyclone Hazards’) in the centre and branched into formation, impacts, management, evaluation. Use colours and short trigger words, never full sentences.

For Cornell notes, I divided pages into three sections: a narrow left column for key questions, a wide right column for bullet-point notes, and a bottom summary. After each class, I wrote key questions like ‘Why did the Haiti earthquake (2010) cause so many deaths?’ and then recalled answers. This turned my notes into a self-quizzing tool.

10. Tackling the A2 Paper 2 Skills and Options | 攻克A2卷二技能与选修部分

The A2 Paper 2 requires a mix of skills, data handling, and the Options topics (e.g., Hazardous Environments, Global Interdependence). For the skills section, I focused on chi-squared tests, Spearman’s rank correlation, and scatter graphs. I memorised the formulas and practised calculating and interpreting results, because it’s procedural marks that many classmates lost.

For Options topics, I didn’t just learn the content; I constantly linked it to the core topics and to synoptic thinking. In hazardous environments, I would connect tectonic hazards with development and governance. For global interdependence, I discussed how globalisation creates both opportunities and inequalities, using the core-periphery model.

11. Stay Motivated and Manage Exam Stress |

Geography is content-heavy, and burnout is real. I scheduled ‘geography-free’ evenings where I relaxed completely. I also formed a study group of three motivated friends; we challenged each other with unexpected questions at lunch. Teaching a concept to someone else is the ultimate test of your understanding.

In the week before exams, I stopped learning new material and focused on reviewing my summary notes, case study flashcards, and error logs. I visualised walking into the exam hall feeling calm and ready. A clear mind is your best asset when facing extended essay questions that demand careful evaluation.

12. Final Thoughts and Key Takeaways |

Achieving an A* in CAIE Geography is not about being naturally brilliant; it’s about purposeful practice, deep understanding of the exam structure, and a genuine curiosity about the world. Every news article about a flood or a trade agreement became living case study material for me. Stay curious, stay structured, and trust the process. You can absolutely do this!
