This article summarises the core knowledge you need for the Edexcel Psychology course, covering memory, development, social influence, mental health and biological psychology. Each section introduces essential concepts and research that will form the foundation for further study at GCSE.
1. Understanding Psychology |
Psychology is often defined as the science of behaviour and mental processes. Unlike common-sense beliefs, psychological knowledge is based on systematic observation, measurement and experimentation. It aims to describe, explain, predict and sometimes change behaviour.
Psychological approaches include biological, cognitive, social and developmental perspectives. Each perspective offers a unique lens for understanding human experience. For example, the biological approach looks at brain structures and neurotransmitters, while the cognitive approach focuses on memory, thinking and decision-making.
2. Research Methods |
An experiment involves manipulating an independent variable (IV) to see its effect on a dependent variable (DV), while controlling other variables. This allows researchers to establish cause-and-effect relationships. Extraneous variables must be controlled to avoid confounding results.
Other methods include observations, questionnaires and case studies. Observations can be naturalistic or controlled, and self-report methods such as questionnaires gather large amounts of data quickly. However, each method has strengths and limitations in terms of reliability, validity and ethics.
Ethical issues are central to psychological research. Key principles include informed consent, protection from harm, right to withdraw, confidentiality and debriefing. Researchers must always balance the pursuit of knowledge with the welfare of participants.
3. Memory: The Multi-Store Model |
The multi-store model (MSM) proposed by Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968) suggests that memory consists of three separate stores: the sensory register, short-term memory (STM) and long-term memory (LTM). Each store differs in capacity, duration and coding.
The sensory register holds information from the senses for a very brief time (about half a second for visual information). If attention is paid to this information, it is transferred to STM. Otherwise, it decays rapidly.
STM has a limited capacity of about 7 (plus or minus 2) items and lasts around 18 seconds unless rehearsed. Information is mainly coded acoustically. Maintenance rehearsal can keep information in STM and help transfer it to LTM.
LTM has potentially unlimited capacity and a very long duration, coding information semantically (by meaning). Evidence for the separate stores comes from the serial position effect: when recalling a list of words, people remember the first few (primacy effect, linked to LTM) and the last few (recency effect, linked to STM) best.
4. Explanations of Forgetting |
Forgetting can occur when memories interfere with each other. Proactive interference happens when old learning disrupts new learning, while retroactive interference is when new learning disrupts the recall of old information. For example, learning a new phone number may make it harder to remember an old one (retroactive interference).
Another explanation is retrieval failure, where information is available in LTM but cannot be accessed because of a lack of appropriate cues. Context-dependent forgetting occurs when the environment at recall differs from the environment at learning (e.g. revising in a quiet room but being tested in a noisy hall).
5. Attachment in Childhood |
Attachment is a deep emotional bond between an infant and a primary caregiver, usually the mother. John Bowlby argued that attachment has an evolutionary basis and is crucial for survival, as it keeps the infant close to the caregiver for protection and care.
Mary Ainsworth’s Strange Situation is a controlled observation designed to assess the quality of attachment in infants aged 12-18 months. It involves a series of separations and reunions with the caregiver and a stranger. Ainsworth identified three main attachment types: secure (type B), insecure-avoidant (type A) and insecure-resistant (type C).
Secure infants show distress when the caregiver leaves, but happily greet them upon return and are quickly soothed. Insecure-avoidant infants appear indifferent to the caregiver’s departure and avoid contact upon reunion. Insecure-resistant infants are very distressed by separation, yet resist comfort when reunited.
6. Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development |
Jean Piaget proposed that children actively construct their understanding of the world through schemas, and that cognitive development proceeds through four distinct stages. Key processes include assimilation (fitting new information into existing schemas) and accommodation (changing schemas to fit new information).
The sensorimotor stage (0-2 years) is when infants learn through senses and actions, and develop object permanence – the understanding that objects continue to exist even when out of sight. The preoperational stage (2-7 years) sees the use of symbols and language, but thinking is egocentric and children struggle with conservation tasks.
In the concrete operational stage (7-11 years), logical reasoning about concrete events develops, and children can perform conservation tasks and classify objects. Finally, in the formal operational stage (11+ years), abstract and hypothetical thinking emerges, allowing systematic problem solving and scientific reasoning.
7. Social Influence: Conformity |
Conformity is a change in behaviour or belief to fit in with a group. Solomon Asch (1951) conducted a classic study where participants were asked to judge the lengths of lines in the presence of confederates who gave obviously wrong answers. Asch found that about 75% of participants conformed at least once, and the overall conformity rate was around 37%.
Two main explanations are normative social influence (conforming to gain approval or avoid rejection) and informational social influence (conforming because others are believed to have more accurate knowledge). Factors affecting conformity include group size, unanimity and task difficulty.
8. Social Influence: Obedience |
Obedience involves following the orders of an authority figure. Stanley Milgram (1963) investigated obedience in a controversial experiment where participants (‘teachers’) were instructed to give electric shocks to a ‘learner’ (a confederate) for incorrect answers. Shocks ranged from 15 to 450 volts. The learner screamed and protested but the experimenter urged the teacher to continue.
Milgram found that 65% of participants continued to the maximum 450-volt shock, despite the apparent distress. This showed that ordinary people can commit harmful acts when ordered by a legitimate authority. Proximity of the victim, presence of disobedient peers and location of the authority significantly influenced obedience levels.
The study raised serious ethical issues, including deception and psychological harm, but it highlighted the power of the situation in shaping behaviour. It remains one of the most famous demonstrations of the danger of blind obedience.
