KS3 AQA History: Formulas & Theorems Quick-Reference Handbook | KS3 AQA

📚 KS3 AQA History: Formulas & Theorems Quick-Reference Handbook | KS3 AQA

In history, you don’t find formulas like E = mc². Instead, historians use powerful thinking frameworks – ‘formulas’ for analysis, argument, and evidence – that help you crack the code of the past. This handbook collects the essential ‘theorems’ and ‘equations’ you need for KS3 AQA History, from structuring a perfect paragraph to evaluating a source. Keep it handy to boost your skills and grades.

1. The PEEL Formula for Paragraphs | PEEL

The PEEL formula (Point, Evidence, Explain, Link) is the basic building block for all historical writing. Start with a clear Point that answers the question. Then back it up with specific Evidence: a fact, date, or quote. Spend most of your paragraph on Explain – showing how the evidence proves your point using phrases like ‘This meant that…’ or ‘As a result…’. Finally, Link back to the question or forward to the next point.

The PEEL Equation:
Claim + Proof + Reasoning + Connection = High-scoring paragraph

2. The Causation Theorem |

Causes and consequences are never simple domino chains. The Causation Theorem states that historical events are shaped by a mix of long-term causes (underlying factors), short-term triggers (the spark), and the role of individuals, ideas, or chance. Always classify causes: social, economic, political, or cultural. Then rank them by importance using words like ‘the most significant cause was…’ or ‘a contributing factor…’. Avoid just listing causes – explain how they connect.

Type of Cause Example (Norman Conquest)
Long-term Edward the Confessor’s lack of an heir
Short-term trigger Harold Godwinson’s coronation
Individual / chance William’s leadership; wind direction

3. The Source Analysis Equation |

Every source can be evaluated using the ‘COP’ equation: Content + Origin + Purpose. Start with Content: what does the source say or show? Then examine Origin: who created it, when, and where? Finally, infer Purpose: why was it made? Was it to inform, persuade, criticise, or entertain? A full analysis also adds Context (what else was happening at the time) and Limitations (what can it NOT tell us?). The equation is:
Utility = (Content + Origin + Purpose) × Context – Limitations

4. The Change & Continuity Principle |

History is rarely a simple story of turning points. The Change & Continuity Principle reminds you to look for what changed AND what stayed the same. When studying a period (e.g. Medieval England after 1066), ask: what changed for ordinary people? What stayed the same? Rate the pace of change: was it rapid transformation or slow evolution? Use language like ‘despite the conquest, much of daily life continued unchanged…’ or ‘the biggest transformation was…’.

5. The Significance Gauge |

Not all events are equally important. Use the 5 Rs of significance to measure an event’s impact: Remarkable – was it noticed at the time? Remembered – did people later remember it? Resulting in change – what did it lead to? Revealing – does it shed light on deeper trends? Resonant – does it connect to wider themes? Assign a significance rating and always justify your judgement.

Remembered(被铭记)- 后来人们记起了它吗? Revealing(揭示性)- 它是否揭示了更深层的趋势?Resonant(共鸣性)- 它是否关联更宏大的主题?

6. The Chronology Linking Rule |

Placing events on a timeline is not enough. To think like a historian, link events using temporal connectors: ‘earlier that year…’, ‘meanwhile…’, ‘as a consequence…’, ‘a decade later…’. The Linking Rule says every new date you mention should be tethered to the previous one by a cause-and-effect or comparison thread. This builds a narrative web instead of a simple list.

7. The Evidence Weighing Formula |

When two sources disagree, weigh them using the formula: Weight = (Nature of source + Author expertise) × Corroboration ÷ Bias. Is the source an official record (high weight) or a personal diary (medium)? Is the author an eyewitness? Does other evidence support it? How biased is it? A biased source may still be useful, but its weight decreases. Always explain why you trust one source more than another.

8. The Historical Interpretation Theorem |

Events are rarely judged the same way by all historians. The Interpretation Theorem asks you to recognise that history is a debate. When you encounter opposing views, identify the historian’s line of argument (thesis) and the evidence they use. Explain why two historians might disagree: perhaps they emphasise different causes, use different sources, or write from different perspectives (e.g. Whig, Marxist, feminist). Then state your own view, supported by evidence.

9. The Enquiry Cycle Formula |

Historical investigation follows a cycle: Question → Research → Hypothesis → Analyse → Conclude. Allowing for iteration, the Formula is: Valid conclusion = (Initial question + Critical source analysis) × Refining hypothesis. Start with a clear, focused enquiry question (e.g. ‘Why did William win at Hastings?’). Gather evidence. Form a tentative answer. Test it against contradicting sources. Revise and reach a reasoned judgement. Never skip the ‘refining’ step.

10. The Counter-Argument Rule |

To reach Level 7/8, you must introduce a counter-argument. The formula: Strength of essay = (Main argument + Evidence) × (Addressing an alternative view). Use phrases like ‘However, some historians argue that…’ or ‘On the other hand…’. Then explain why your main argument remains stronger. This shows you understand the complexity of the past.

11. The ‘Big Picture’ Grid | ‘

Always place specific details on a timeline and within a broad context. Draw a mental grid: on the horizontal axis, plot time (0 CE to present); on the vertical axis, layer themes like politics, society, economy, culture. When you learn a new fact, plot its coordinates. This grid helps you see patterns and connections across centuries, turning isolated facts into a coherent story.

Grid Formula: Understanding = (Fact × Time-coordinate) ÷ (Theme + Context)

12. The Revision Retrieval Equation |

Your memory works like a muscle. The Retrieval Equation for history revision: Retention = (Active recall + Spacing) × Elaboration. Instead of re-reading notes, test yourself with flashcards. Space your practice over days and weeks. Elaborate by explaining the material in your own words using the PEEL or Causation theorems. Mix topics to strengthen connections. This science-backed formula ensures that facts stick for the exam.
