1. Semiotics: The Sign Formula |

Semiotics is the study of signs. A sign is made up of two parts: the signifier (the physical form) and the signified (the mental concept). Together, they create meaning.

SIGN = SIGNIFIER + SIGNIFIED → MEANING

For example, a red rose (signifier) can signify love or passion (signified), depending on the cultural code.

2. Narrative Structure: Todorov’s Equilibrium Theorem |

Todorov stated that most narratives follow a five‑step structure, moving from equilibrium to disruption and then to a new resolution. This pattern helps audiences recognise story shape.

EQUILIBRIUM → DISRUPTION → RECOGNITION → REPAIR → NEW EQUILIBRIUM

Many fairy tales and Hollywood films follow this exact sequence, making it a powerful tool for analysing plot development.

3. Character Roles: Propp’s Character Theorem |

Vladimir Propp identified seven recurring character roles in folk tales. This theorem can be applied to modern media texts, from movies to video games.

  • The Hero – seeks something /
  • The Villain – opposes the hero /
  • The Donor – provides a magical object /
  • The Helper – assists the hero /
  • The Princess – reward for the hero /
  • The Dispatcher – sends the hero on the quest /
  • The False Hero – claims reward falsely /

These roles often combine, but identifying them helps reveal the underlying narrative formula.

4. Binary Oppositions: Levi‑Strauss’ Theorem |

Claude Levi‑Strauss argued that meaning in media is created by opposites, such as good vs evil, rich vs poor, or nature vs technology. The contrast drives conflict and understanding.

MEANING = CONCEPT A ↔ CONCEPT B (IN OPPOSITION)

In a superhero movie, the hero and villain are binary opposites; their clash makes the narrative exciting and meaningful.

5. Genre Formula: Codes + Conventions |

Every genre has a set of codes (symbols, sounds, camera work) and conventions (expected storylines, character types). When these repeat, audiences instantly recognise the genre.

GENRE = ICONOGRAPHY + STRUCTURE + THEME

For instance, a horror genre often includes dark lighting, isolated settings, and a final girl convention – these elements add up to the formula of fear.

6. The Representation Theorem |

Representation is never a simple mirror of reality. Media texts select, construct and mediate versions of the world. The representation formula reminds us that meaning is built, not just reflected.

REPRESENTATION = REALITY + MEDIATION → CONSTRUCTED IMAGE

Stereotypes simplify this formula by reducing a group of people to a single exaggerated trait, often repeated across many texts until it feels natural.

7. Audience Uses and Gratifications Formula |

Instead of asking what media does to audiences, this theory asks what audiences do with media. The formula breaks down audience needs into four key categories.

MEDIA USE = INFORMATION + PERSONAL IDENTITY + SOCIAL INTEGRATION + ENTERTAINMENT

For example, a teenager watching a vlog might satisfy personal identity (relating to the creator), social integration (sharing with friends) and entertainment all at once.

8. Encoding/Decoding Theorem (Hall) |

Stuart Hall’s theorem explains that media producers encode meanings, but audiences can decode them in different ways: dominant, negotiated or oppositional. Meaning is not fixed.

PRODUCER → ENCODE → MESSAGE → DECODE → AUDIENCE (3 POSITIONS)

This formula explains why the same news story can be understood as fair, slightly biased or completely false by different viewers.

9. Media Industry: Cost and Revenue Formulas |

Understanding media as an industry means looking at the numbers. These formulas help measure efficiency, profitability and audience value.

CPM (Cost Per Mille) (Total Cost ÷ Impressions) × 1000
Reach Unique users who saw the content
Circulation Number of copies distributed 发行量

These business formulas are used by streaming services, magazines and online platforms to decide which content to produce next.

10. Digital Engagement Metrics |

On social media, success is measured by how audiences interact with posts. Engagement rate is the central formula for creators and advertisers.

ENGAGEMENT RATE = (LIKES + COMMENTS + SHARES) ÷ REACH × 100%

A high engagement rate signals that a media text is resonating with its target audience. Platforms then boost that content further.

The AIDA model is a classic advertising theorem that describes the steps a consumer moves through when encountering an advert. It is a linear pathway from awareness to purchase.

ATTENTION → INTEREST → DESIRE → ACTION

Marketers design campaigns that first grab your attention (bold headline), spark interest (relevant message), create desire (emotional appeal) and finally prompt action (buy now button).

12. Editing and Continuity Rules |

Though not formulas in the mathematical sense, editing rules function as theorems that keep screen space logical. The most famous is the 180‑degree rule.

180° RULE: CAMERA MUST STAY ON ONE SIDE OF THE ACTION LINE

If this rule is broken, the audience becomes disoriented. Continuity editing also includes match on action, shot/reverse shot and eyeline match, all ensuring a seamless story world.
