📚 KS3 Cambridge Biology: Common Misconceptions and How to Correct Them | 剑桥KS3生物常见误区与纠正方法
Many KS3 students hold onto persistent misconceptions about fundamental biological ideas, from how plants feed to how muscles work. These misunderstandings can create obstacles for later learning if not addressed early. This article identifies ten of the most common mistakes and provides clear, accurate explanations to help students build a robust understanding of biology.
1. Plants get their food from the soil |
Misconception: Many students believe that plants, like animals, need to ‘eat’ food, and that they absorb ready‑made nutrients directly from the soil through their roots. They often think fertiliser is ‘plant food’ that directly nourishes the plant.
Correct understanding: Plants are autotrophs – they produce their own food through photosynthesis. Using energy from sunlight, plants combine carbon dioxide from the air with water from the soil to create glucose and oxygen. Minerals such as nitrates dissolve in soil water and are absorbed by roots, but these are used to build proteins and other molecules, not as an energy source. The true ‘food’ the plant makes for itself is glucose.
2. Breathing and respiration are the same | 呼吸和呼吸作用是一回事
Misconception: Many learners think that respiration is simply the act of breathing in and out. They often use the two words interchangeably.
Correct understanding: Breathing (ventilation) is the physical process of moving air into and out of the lungs. Respiration is a chemical reaction that takes place inside every living cell, releasing energy from glucose. This process does not depend on breathing movements and can be summarised as: glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water (+ energy). Breathing simply supplies the oxygen needed for respiration and removes the waste carbon dioxide.
3. Plants photosynthesise during the day and respire only at night |
Misconception: Students often assume that photosynthesis happens exclusively in the daytime, while respiration is something plants do only at night when there is no light.
Correct understanding: Plants respire continuously, 24 hours a day. During the day, both photosynthesis and respiration occur simultaneously. Photosynthesis uses carbon dioxide and water to make glucose and oxygen: 6CO₂ + 6H₂O → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂. Respiration uses glucose and oxygen to release energy. Because photosynthesis usually proceeds faster than respiration in daylight, there is a net release of oxygen, which can mask the ongoing respiration. At night, photosynthesis stops but respiration continues.
4. All arteries carry oxygenated blood |
Misconception: A very common error is to label the pulmonary artery as carrying oxygen‑rich blood simply because it is called an artery. Pupils often colour all arteries red and all veins blue without exception.
Correct understanding: The definition of an artery is a blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart, regardless of its oxygen content. The right ventricle pumps deoxygenated blood into the pulmonary artery, which takes it to the lungs. Oxygenated blood returns to the left atrium through the pulmonary veins. Therefore, the pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood, and the pulmonary vein carries oxygenated blood. The rule ‘arteries carry oxygenated blood’ applies to the systemic circulation, not the pulmonary circuit.
5. Digestion happens entirely in the stomach |
Misconception: Many pupils picture the stomach as the main site where all food gets broken down and where nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream.
Correct understanding: Digestion begins in the mouth, where teeth mechanically break down food and salivary amylase starts digesting starch. The stomach churns food and mixes it with gastric juice containing protease enzymes and hydrochloric acid, which mainly break down proteins and kill bacteria. However, the vast majority of chemical digestion and nutrient absorption takes place in the small intestine, where enzymes from the pancreas and bile from the liver act. The inner wall of the small intestine is covered with villi that enormously increase the surface area for absorption.
6. All bacteria are harmful germs |
Misconception: The word ‘bacteria’ tends to be linked exclusively with illness and infection, leading students to believe all bacteria are dangerous and should be wiped out.
Correct understanding: The vast majority of bacteria are harmless or even essential for life. Decomposer bacteria break down dead organic matter and recycle nutrients in ecosystems. In the human gut, billions of beneficial bacteria aid digestion and produce vitamins. Humans also exploit bacteria to make foods such as yogurt and cheese, and to produce antibiotics. Only a small fraction of bacteria are pathogenic, causing disease.
