📚 KS3 Cambridge Philosophy: Core Knowledge Review |

Welcome to the KS3 Cambridge Philosophy revision guide. Philosophy means ‘love of wisdom’ and involves asking big questions about existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. This article covers the essential topics you will meet in the Cambridge curriculum, from logic and ethics to political philosophy and famous thinkers. Understanding these core concepts will help you think critically, build strong arguments, and appreciate different worldviews.

1. What is Philosophy? |

Philosophy is the study of fundamental questions about reality, knowledge, and how we should live. Unlike science, which relies on experiments, philosophy uses reason, logic, and critical thinking to examine concepts we often take for granted. It asks questions like: ‘What is truth?’, ‘Do we have free will?’, and ‘What makes an action right or wrong?’

In the Cambridge KS3 course, you will learn to approach problems philosophically by asking ‘Why?’ and ‘What if?’. You will explore different branches of philosophy: metaphysics (what exists), epistemology (how we know), ethics (right and wrong), and logic (correct reasoning). This broad introduction helps you develop a questioning mindset.

2. Logic and Argumentation |

Logic is the branch of philosophy that studies the principles of correct reasoning. An argument in philosophy is not a quarrel but a set of statements (premises) intended to support a conclusion. A valid argument is one where if the premises are true, the conclusion must be true. A sound argument is a valid argument with true premises.

You will learn to identify common logical fallacies, such as ad hominem (attacking the person rather than the argument), straw man (misrepresenting an argument to make it easier to attack), and false dilemma (presenting only two options when more exist). Recognising these flaws strengthens your own reasoning and helps you evaluate others’ claims.

3. Ethics: Right and Wrong |

Ethics explores questions about how we ought to live and what makes actions morally right or wrong. Three major theories often introduced at KS3 are consequentialism, deontology, and virtue ethics. Consequentialism (like utilitarianism) judges actions by their outcomes – the greatest good for the greatest number. Deontology (associated with Immanuel Kant) focuses on duties and rules, such as ‘never lie’, regardless of consequences. Virtue ethics (Aristotle) emphasises developing good character traits, like courage and honesty.

You will also examine real-life ethical dilemmas, such as the trolley problem: a runaway trolley is about to kill five people; you can pull a lever to divert it to another track where it will kill one person. Is it right to sacrifice one to save five? This helps you apply ethical theories and reflect on your own values.

4. Epistemology: How Do We Know?

Epistemology is the theory of knowledge. It asks: ‘What is knowledge?’, ‘How do we acquire it?’, and ‘What can we be certain of?’. Traditionally, knowledge is defined as justified true belief. For you to know something, it must be true, you must believe it, and you must have good reasons (justification) for that belief. However, challenges like the Gettier problem show that justified true belief might not always be sufficient for knowledge.

Sources of knowledge include perception, reason, testimony, and memory. Philosophers also distinguish between a priori knowledge (independent of experience, e.g., 2 + 3 = 5) and a posteriori knowledge (based on experience, e.g., water boils at 100°C). You will discuss scepticism – the view that we cannot know anything for certain – and responses such as Descartes’ ‘I think, therefore I am’.

5. The Mind-Body Problem |

The mind-body problem concerns the relationship between the mind (consciousness, thoughts, feelings) and the physical body. Dualism, defended by Descartes, holds that mind and body are two distinct substances: the mind is non-physical and the body is physical. This raises the question of how they interact. Materialism (or physicalism), in contrast, argues that the mind is entirely physical – mental states are brain states. A third view is functionalism, which claims that mental states are defined by their causal roles, not by what they are made of.

At KS3 you might explore thought experiments like the ‘brain in a vat’ or ‘Mary’s room’. Mary is a top neuroscientist who has never seen colour but knows all the physical facts about colour vision. When she finally sees red, does she learn something new? This challenges the idea that physical facts explain everything about consciousness.

6. Does God Exist? Arguments For and Against | 上帝存在吗?

The philosophy of religion examines arguments for and against the existence of God. Key arguments for God’s existence include the design argument (teleological argument): the complexity of the universe suggests a designer, like a watch implies a watchmaker. The cosmological argument states that everything has a cause; there must be a first uncaused cause, which is God. The ontological argument attempts to prove God’s existence from the concept of a perfect being.

Arguments against include the problem of evil: if God is all-powerful and all-good, why does evil exist? The argument from inconsistent revelations points out that different religions make contradictory claims, so not all can be true. Additionally, some argue that the burden of proof lies with those claiming that God exists, and without sufficient evidence, atheism is the default.

7. Political Philosophy: Justice and Rights |

Political philosophy asks how society should be organised and what makes a government legitimate. You will examine concepts like justice, freedom, equality, and rights. John Rawls’s theory of ‘justice as fairness’ uses a thought experiment called the ‘original position’ behind a ‘veil of ignorance’, where people design a society without knowing their own place in it. This encourages fair principles that protect the least advantaged.

Other key ideas include the social contract (Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau), where individuals give up some freedom in exchange for security and order. You might also debate positive vs negative freedom: freedom to achieve goals vs freedom from interference. Human rights, such as the right to life, liberty, and education, are also central to discussions about global justice.

8. Philosophical Methods and Thought Experiments |

Philosophers use various methods to clarify ideas and test theories. Conceptual analysis involves breaking down complex concepts into simpler components (e.g., ‘What is knowledge?’). Thought experiments are imaginary scenarios used to explore philosophical questions. Examples include Plato’s cave, the ship of Theseus, and the ticking bomb scenario in ethics.

Critical thinking is central: you learn to identify premises, evaluate inferences, and detect bias. You also practice Socratic questioning – asking probing questions to expose hidden assumptions. Engaging in respectful dialogue and being open to having your own views challenged are key skills you develop throughout the KS3 course.

9. Famous Philosophers and Their Ideas |

Throughout KS3, you will encounter several influential thinkers. Socrates (ancient Greece) emphasised asking questions to gain wisdom: ‘I know that I know nothing.’ Plato, his student, proposed the theory of Forms – perfect, unchanging ideas that exist beyond the physical world. Aristotle, Plato’s student, focused on empirical observation and virtue ethics, teaching that happiness is achieved through a life of virtue.

Rene Descartes (17th century) is famous for foundationalism and dualism, starting with the certainty of his own existence: ‘Cogito, ergo sum’. John Locke argued for empiricism – the mind is a blank slate at birth, and knowledge comes from experience. Immanuel Kant developed deontological ethics, centred on the categorical imperative: act only according to rules that could become universal laws.

10. Applying Philosophy in Everyday Life | 哲学在日常生活中的应用

Philosophy is not just for classrooms; it equips you with skills for daily life. When you evaluate news sources, you use epistemological principles to assess evidence and credibility. When you discuss moral dilemmas with friends, you draw on ethical frameworks. Even in making personal decisions, you rely on logic and critical thinking to weigh pros and cons.

Debating clubs and student councils are practical arenas for philosophical engagement. You learn to construct coherent arguments, listen to opposing views, and revise your opinions when presented with good reasons. These habits of mind foster open-mindedness and intellectual humility – qualities highly valued in education and future careers.
