1. The Semiotic Formula |
In Media Studies, every sign can be broken down into two parts: the signifier (the physical form we see or hear) and the signified (the mental concept it represents). This relationship is the basic ‘formula’ for meaning-making. Remember: Sign = Signifier + Signified. A red heart emoji (signifier) can signify love or affection (signified), but the meaning also depends on cultural context and the platform where it is used.
Building on this, denotation is the literal, obvious meaning of a sign, while connotation is the deeper, associated meaning. For instance, a dove denotes a type of bird but connotes peace. This denotation-connotation pair helps you analyse how texts create multiple layers of meaning.
2. The Shot Size Formula |
Filmmakers use shot sizes to control how much of the subject and setting we see, and to shape our emotional distance from the action. Each shot size serves a distinct narrative function, and together they form a visual ‘formula’ for storytelling. The table below summarises the core shot types you need to know for KS3 CCEA Media.
|---|---|---|---|
| Extreme Long Shot (ELS) | 极远景 | Establishes location; characters appear tiny in the landscape. |
| Long Shot (LS) | 远景 | Shows the full body of the subject and some surroundings; good for action. |
| Medium Shot (MS) | 中景 | Frames the subject from the waist up; common for dialogue scenes. |
| Close-Up (CU) | 特写 | Fills the frame with a face or object; reveals emotions and details. |
| Extreme Close-Up (ECU) | 大特写 | Shows a very small detail, such as an eye or a key in a lock; creates intensity. |
3. The Camera Angle Formula |
Camera angles are not chosen randomly; they follow a ‘formula’ that instantly communicates power, vulnerability or neutrality. The angle from which the camera views a subject can make that subject appear strong, weak or equal to the viewer. Learning to recognise these angles is a core skill for media analysis.
| Angle Type | 角度类型 | Effect on the Subject | 对主体的效果 |
|---|---|---|---|
| High Angle | 俯角 | Camera looks down; subject appears small, weak or trapped. |
| Low Angle | 仰角 | Camera looks up; subject seems powerful, dominant or threatening. |
| Eye-Level Shot | 平视镜头 | Camera at the subject’s eye level; creates a sense of equality and realism. |
| Bird’s Eye View | 鸟瞰角度 | Overhead shot from directly above; makes the scene look abstract, detached or surveyed. |
| Worm’s Eye View | 虫视角度 | Extremely low angle from the ground; exaggerates size and importance. |
4. The Lighting Theorem |
In film and photography, the three-point lighting setup is a fundamental ‘theorem’ for creating depth and mood. This arrangement uses three key light sources: Key Light + Fill Light + Back Light = Three-Point Lighting. The key light is the main illumination, the fill light reduces harsh shadows, and the back light separates the subject from the background. By adjusting the intensity and direction of these lights, media creators can shape the audience’s emotional response.
Beyond the basic setup, lighting falls into two expressive categories: high-key lighting, which is bright and even, minimising shadows, often seen in comedies and adverts; and low-key lighting, which creates stark contrasts and deep shadows, typical of horror or film noir. Understanding this theorem helps you explain the atmosphere of any media image.
5. The Sound Classification Formula |
Sound in media is classified by its source relative to the story world, and this classification forms a simple formula: all audio is either diegetic or non-diegetic. Diegetic sound originates from within the story world — characters can hear it. Examples include dialogue, footsteps, radio music playing in a scene. Non-diegetic sound comes from outside the story world, such as a film’s orchestral score or a voiced-over narration that only the audience hears.
You can extend the formula with subcategories: ambient sound (background noise that creates a sense of place, e.g. traffic, birdsong), synchronous sound (matched to the visual action, like a punch sound effect), and asynchronous sound (heard without seeing its source, building suspense). Remember: Sound = Mood + Information. Always ask what a sound tells you about character, setting or genre.
6. The Narrative Structure Theorem |
Tzvetan Todorov’s narrative theory provides a clear ‘theorem’ for how most stories are told in media. The formula is: Equilibrium → Disruption → Recognition → Attempt to Repair → New Equilibrium. The story begins with a balanced state (equilibrium), then something disrupts it, the characters realise the problem, they strive to fix it, and finally a new balance is achieved — often changed from the start.
For example, in a superhero film, the city is at peace (equilibrium), a villain attacks (disruption), the hero identifies the threat, battles the villain (attempt to repair), and peace returns, but with a changed city or hero (new equilibrium). You can apply this five-stage formula to almost any film, TV drama or even a 30-second advert to trace the narrative flow.
7. The Character Function Formula |
Vladimir Propp analysed folk tales and identified eight character types that perform specific functions in a story. You can think of this as a ‘formula’ for casting a narrative: Hero + Villain + Dispatcher + Donor + Helper + Princess + False Hero (and often the Father). Each type drives the plot forward in a predictable way, and many modern media texts still rely on these archetypes.
|---|---|---|---|
| The Hero | 英雄 | Seeks something, battles the villain, restores balance. |
| The Villain | 反派 | Creates conflict, opposes the hero. |
| The Dispatcher | 派遣者 | Sends the hero on the quest. |
| The Donor | 赠予者 | Prepares the hero or gives a magical object. |
| The Helper | 帮手 | Aids the hero on the journey. |
| The Princess | 公主 | Often the reward for the hero, also may need rescuing. |
| The False Hero | 伪英雄 | Appears to be good but turns out to be deceitful. |
8. The Editing Rules Formula |
Continuity editing follows a set of ‘rules’ to make the screen action appear seamless and logical. The 180-degree rule states that the camera must stay on one side of an imaginary line connecting two characters, so that screen direction remains consistent. The 30-degree rule warns against cutting between two shots of the same subject with less than a 30° change in angle, which can cause a jarring jump cut. Together, these rules form a visual grammar formula.
Other key editing formulae include the match on action (cutting during a movement to create a smooth flow), shot-reverse-shot (cutting between two characters in conversation to show their reactions), and cross-cutting (alternating between two or more scenes happening at the same time to build tension). Every edit choice either follows these formulae for clarity or deliberately breaks them for aesthetic effect.
