1. Introduction to Case Study Analysis |

Case study analysis in Media Studies involves breaking down a media text into its component parts and examining how they work together to create meaning. You will follow a three‑step process: first, describe exactly what you see, hear or read; second, analyse how the producer used media language and techniques; third, evaluate the impact on the target audience. The four key concepts – media language, representation, audience and institution – form the foundation of every case study.

When approaching any case study, always ask: who made this, for whom, and why? What techniques are used to grab attention? How are people, places and ideas represented? Keeping these questions in mind will sharpen your analytical skills.

2. Understanding Target Audience |

Every media text is created with a specific audience in mind. The target audience can be defined by age, gender, interests, income, lifestyle and media habits. Identifying the audience helps explain why certain images, language and music are chosen. For example, a toy advert will use bright colours and simple words to appeal to children, while a luxury car advert may feature sleek visuals and sophisticated narration for adults.

To practise, look at a magazine cover and list three clues that reveal its target reader. Consider the cover star, the colour palette and the article teasers. This quick exercise will train you to spot audience cues in seconds.

3. Media Language: Camera Shots and Angles |

Camera shots and angles are the building blocks of visual storytelling. Each type creates a different relationship between the viewer and what is on screen. A close‑up draws us into a character’s emotions, while a long shot establishes the setting. Camera angles also convey power: a low angle makes a subject look dominant, whereas a high angle can make them seem vulnerable.

Extreme long shot (ELS) 极远景 Shows vast landscape; character is tiny
Long shot (LS) 远景 Full body visible; sets scene 全身可见;交代场景
Medium shot (MS) 中景 Waist up; shows gestures and expression
Close‑up (CU) 特写 Focus on face; reveals emotion 聚焦面部;揭示情感
Extreme close‑up (ECU) 极特写 Eyes or object detail; intense drama 眼睛或物体细节;强烈戏剧感

Task: Watch the opening 20 seconds of a film trailer. Pause every time the shot changes and name the shot type. Then explain why the director chose that shot for that moment. Write your analysis in a table with three columns: time, shot type and purpose.

4. Media Language: Colour and Lighting |

Colour and lighting are powerful tools that influence the mood and meaning of a media text. Warm colours such as red, orange and yellow suggest energy, excitement or danger, while cool colours like blue and green imply calm, trust or nature. Lighting can be high‑key (bright, even, often used in comedies and adverts) or low‑key (dark shadows, strong contrasts, often used in thrillers and horror).

In an advert for a summer drink, you might see high‑key lighting, a bright blue sky and vibrant fruit colours. This combination creates a feeling of freshness and happiness. Compare this with a film poster for a psychological thriller: the image is bathed in deep shadows, with a single shaft of light cutting across the character’s face, building tension and mystery.

Exercise: Find two print adverts for the same type of product (e.g. perfume). Analyse the dominant colours and lighting in each. What emotions do they evoke? Which target audience do they aim for? Present your findings in a short paragraph for each advert.

5. Narrative Structure in Adverts |

Many adverts follow a simple narrative structure to engage viewers and deliver a message quickly. A common model is the ‘problem–solution’ format: the opening shows a character facing a difficulty, the middle introduces the product as the answer, and the ending shows the happy result. This structure mirrors Todorov’s equilibrium theory: equilibrium, disruption, recognition, attempt to repair and new equilibrium.

Watch a 30‑second TV advert for a cleaning product. The opening usually shows a messy room (disruption), the product is used (repair attempt), and the final scene displays a sparkling clean home (new equilibrium). The music shifts from frantic to calm, reinforcing the narrative.

Now try this: sketch a six‑frame storyboard for an imaginary advert for a new energy snack. Use the problem–solution model. Label each frame with the narrative stage and the camera shot you would use. This will help you understand how visual storytelling works in advertising.

6. Representation in Media Texts |

Representation refers to how media texts portray people, places, events and ideas. These portrayals are not neutral; they are constructed through choices made by the producer. Stereotypes are often used as shortcuts, but they can reinforce simplistic or even harmful views. When analysing representation, look at factors such as gender, ethnicity, age, ability and social class.

Consider a sports drink advert featuring a famous female athlete. She is shown training intensely, sweat glistening, eyes determined. The slow‑motion footage and powerful soundtrack portray her as strong and dedicated, challenging the outdated stereotype that women are physically weak. The representation is aspirational and empowering.

Activity: Choose a magazine advert for a fashion brand. Count how many men and women appear. Describe their poses, facial expressions and clothing. Does the advert promote a narrow definition of beauty, or does it celebrate diversity? Write a short analysis using the word ‘representation’ at least three times.

7. Institution and Purpose |

The institution behind a media text shapes its purpose. A commercial company aims to sell products and build brand loyalty, whereas a public service broadcaster like the BBC aims to inform, educate and entertain. Knowing who produced the text helps you decode its message. You should also consider regulation; in the UK, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) ensures adverts are legal, decent, honest and truthful.

When analysing a charity campaign poster, note that the institution is a non‑profit organisation. Its purpose is not to sell a product but to raise awareness and encourage donations. The media language will therefore be emotive: a close‑up of a child’s sad eyes, a direct appeal in the text and a clear call to action like ‘Donate now’. Compare this with a fast‑food advert, where the institution’s purpose is to stimulate appetite and drive sales.

Let us apply everything so far to a full case study. Imagine a 30‑second TV advert for ‘Zesty’, a new tropical fruit juice. The advert opens with a long shot of four teenagers looking tired at a bus stop on a grey, rainy afternoon. One opens a bottle of Zesty. As she drinks, the scene cuts to a sunny beach with a close‑up of the juice bottle glistening. The teenagers are now laughing, wearing bright clothes, splashing in the waves. The music is upbeat reggae. The screen fades to the Zesty logo and the slogan ‘Unleash the Sunshine’.

Contrast between grey, rainy lighting and bright tropical colours; close‑up of bottle; fast editing when transformation happens
Teenagers as energetic and social; diversity in group; product turns dull life into fun
Targeted at 13–18 year olds; music genre and slang appeal to youth culture; aspirational message
Commercial company launching new product; purpose: create brand identity and increase sales; slogan reinforces product benefit

Your turn: create a similar table for any real TV advert you have seen recently. Fill in the four rows with precise examples. This routine will become second nature as you build your case study portfolio.

9. Comparative Analysis: Two Film Posters |

Comparing two media texts side by side highlights how different techniques target different audiences. Let us compare Poster A for ‘Jungle Quest’, an animated adventure film, and Poster B for ‘Star Frontier’, a sci‑fi blockbuster. Poster A features a bright green jungle, smiling animal characters and a large title in a playful font. The tagline reads ‘Friendship knows no bounds’. Poster B uses a dark starry background, a solitary astronaut in a high‑tech suit and a cold metallic font. The tagline says ‘One mission. No return.’

让我们比较电影《丛林探秘》的海报A(一部动画冒险片)和《星际前线》的海报B(一部科幻大片)。

Use this comparison table as a model:

Poster A Poster B
Children and families Teens and adults, sci‑fi fans
Warm greens, yellows, vivid Cool blacks, blues, silvers
Representation of heroes 英雄再现 Friendly animals working as a team Strong, isolated human overcoming odds
Joy, adventure, safety Tension, mystery, epic scale

Now find two film posters for movies released in the same year – one a comedy, the other a horror film. Fill out a similar table identifying the targeting and representational strategies. This will sharpen your ability to spot genre conventions instantly.

10. Creating Your Own Media Text |

The best way to understand media language is to produce your own. Design a poster or storyboard for a new sports shoe aimed at teenagers. Begin by defining your target audience and message. Then sketch a rough layout: choose a central image, a slogan and two to three colour swatches. Think about camera angle if you were photographing it: would you use a low angle to make the shoe look powerful?

Write a short rationale explaining your choices. For example: ‘I used a close‑up of the shoe against a gritty urban background to appeal to teenage skateboarders. The red accent colour suggests energy and rebellion. My slogan, “Break the Pavement”, speaks directly to their desire for freedom.’

Peer review: swap designs with a classmate. Ask them to identify the target audience and the mood created. If they can read your intentions clearly, your media text is effective. If not, revise one element and explain how it changes the reading.

Creating your own case study from scratch reinforces every concept taught in this unit. Keep a portfolio of your advertisements, posters and analyses. Over time, you will develop a sharp, critical eye that will serve you well
