1. Media Forms and Platforms |
A medium is any channel that delivers a message. Media forms include print (e.g. newspapers, magazines), broadcast (e.g. television, radio) and digital (e.g. websites, apps, social media). The platform is the specific technology or service used to access the content, such as TikTok, Netflix, a gaming console or a cinema screen. Recognising form and platform helps you understand how the mode of delivery shapes meaning and audience expectations.
Memory tip: think of ‘F-P-D’ (Form, Platform, Delivery). Ask: What is it made of? Where is it experienced? How is it sent?
2. Media Language: The ‘Grammar’ of Media |
Media language refers to the tools and codes used to create meaning. These include visual elements (camera, colour, lighting), audio elements (sound effects, music, silence) and written or spoken language (slogans, headlines, dialogue). Just as writers use words and punctuation, media producers use codes and conventions to communicate ideas and to guide the audience’s reading of a text.
Memory phrase: ‘CCLASS’ – Camera, Colour, Lighting, Audio, Symbols, Speech. A checklist for every analysis.
3. Camera Shots and Angles |
Camera shots describe how much of the subject or scene is visible. An extreme long shot (ELS) establishes setting, a long shot (LS) shows the full body, a medium shot (MS) frames the waist up, a close-up (CU) focuses on the face, and an extreme close-up (ECU) highlights fine detail like an eye or a button. These choices control what the audience sees and feels.
Camera angles communicate power and point of view. A high-angle shot looks down on the subject, making it seem small or vulnerable. A low-angle shot looks up, giving the subject power or dominance. An eye-level shot creates equality and realism. A canted (Dutch) angle slants the frame to suggest unease or tension.
Memory trick: associate shot types with body zones — ‘EELS’ (Extreme long), ‘Legs’ for long, ‘Middle’ for medium, ‘Close’ like a face-to-face conversation, ‘Extreme close’ for detail. For angles, think ‘HALVE’: High = Above, Low = Below, Eye = Equal, Vangled (canted) = Uneasy.
4. Sound: Diegetic and Non-Diegetic |
Diegetic sound is any sound that exists inside the world of the story, such as dialogue between characters, footsteps, a radio playing in a car, or birdsong that characters can hear. The source is visible or implied within the scene. Non-diegetic sound comes from outside the story world — for example, a film score, a voice-over narrator, or added sound effects that characters cannot hear. This sound shapes audience mood and interpretation directly.
Parallel sound matches the mood of a scene (e.g. tense music in a thriller), while contrapuntal sound deliberately clashes to create discomfort or irony (e.g. cheerful music over a violent sequence).
Memory hook: ‘D’ for diegetic = ‘inside the Door’ of the story world. ‘N’ for non-diegetic = ‘Not inside’. For parallel, think ‘same page’; contrapuntal, think ‘contradiction’.
5. Editing: Pace, Transition and Continuity |
Editing is the process of selecting and arranging shots to create a finished sequence. The pace of editing — how quickly or slowly shots change — controls rhythm and excitement. Fast cutting (short shot duration) builds energy or urgency; long takes (prolonged shots) create tension or allow the audience to observe detail slowly. Transitions include cuts (instant change), dissolves (one shot fades into another), fades (to or from black) and wipes.
Continuity editing aims to make the story flow smoothly so that the audience does not notice the cuts. This relies on techniques such as the 180-degree rule, shot-reverse-shot for dialogue, and match on action. Discontinuity editing deliberately breaks these rules to unsettle the viewer, as often seen in music videos or avant-garde films.
Memory device: think ‘PACE’ for editing — Pace, Arrangement, Continuity, Eye-trace (where the viewer looks).
6. Mise-en-Scène: Everything in the Frame |
Mise-en-scène is a French term meaning ‘placed in the scene’. It covers all the visual elements appearing before the camera: setting and props, costume, hair and make-up, figure expression and body language, lighting and colour. Analysing mise-en-scène helps you understand how a single frame can communicate character, mood, time period and genre without a single word of dialogue.
Memory phrase: ‘CLAMPS’ — Costume, Lighting, Acting (expression/body language), Make-up, Props, Setting. This acronym is used by media students across the UK.
7. Genre: Codes, Conventions and Expectations |
Genre is a category of media text sharing similar codes and conventions. For example, horror uses low-key lighting, isolated settings, tense music and scream sound effects. Romance features soft lighting, close-ups of faces and uplifting music. Audiences recognise these repeated elements and form expectations. Producers can then fulfil those expectations or play with them to create hybrid genres and surprises.
Iconography refers to the visual signs immediately associated with a genre — a cowboy hat signals a Western, a lightsaber signals science fiction. Conventions are the ‘rules’ of storytelling within a genre, such as the obligatory chase scene in an action film.
Memory tip: ‘GICS’ — Genre, Iconography, Conventions, Stereotypes. Link the genre to its visual shorthand.
8. Narrative: How Stories Are Told |
Narrative refers to the structure and organisation of a story. Every media text that tells a story has a narrator or narrative voice, a series of events (plot), and characters who drive the action. In KS3 CCEA, you learn to spot the difference between story (all events) and plot (the events shown and the order in which they are presented).
Todorov’s equilibrium theory helps chart narrative: 1. Equilibrium (normal world), 2. Disruption (something changes), 3. Recognition of disruption, 4. Attempt to repair, 5. New equilibrium. Propp identified common character types such as the hero, villain, donor and helper.
Memory acronym: ‘DREAM’ for plot structure — Disruption, Response, Effort, Achievement, new Mood. For character types, think ‘HVVPDH’ (Hero, Villain, Victim, Princess, Donor, Helper).
9. Representation: Constructing Reality |
Representation is how media texts re-present people, places, ideas and events. All media representations are constructed; they are not a window on the world but a selective version made through choices about what to include and what to leave out. Media students must ask: who is being shown, how are they shown, and what message does this create about that group or issue?
Stereotypes are simplified, often exaggerated representations that repeat over time. Countertypes challenge a stereotype by presenting a more complex, opposite image. For example, a dominant female action hero can countertype the traditional passive female character.
Memory tool: ‘SCREAM’ — Select, Construct, Represent, Encodes meaning, Audience interprets, Mediates reality.
10. Audience: Target, Demographics and Reception |
Audience is the group for whom a media product is made. Identifying the target audience involves demographics (age, gender, income, occupation) and psychographics (values, interests, attitudes). A teen magazine targets 13–18-year-old females with content on fashion and relationships; a football podcast targets sports-interested males 18–35. Audience positioning is how a text places the viewer — for instance, inviting identification with a hero or taking a critical stance.
The uses and gratifications model suggests audiences actively choose media for personal needs: information, personal identity, integration and social interaction, entertainment and escapism. Remember this as ‘PIES’ — Personal Identity, Information, Entertainment, Social interaction.
Memory shortcut: ‘TADPOLE’ — Target audience, Age, Demographic, Psychographic, Open (how the audience is positioned), Life, Ethnicity.
11. Institution: Ownership, Production and Ideology |
A media institution is the organisation that produces and distributes media. This can be a huge conglomerate (e.g. the BBC, Disney, Meta) or a small independent company. Institutional analysis looks at funding (licence fee, advertising, subscriptions), ownership (public service vs commercial), and how the institution’s values affect content. The BBC, as a public service broadcaster, has a remit to ‘inform, educate and entertain’.
Regulation is part of institution study. In the UK, Ofcom regulates TV, radio and video-on-demand, ensuring standards of fairness and privacy. Knowing who made a text and why can reveal hidden messages and power structures.
Memory ID: ‘POOR’ — Producer, Ownership, Objectives, Regulation. Connect the institution to its purpose.
12. Memory Techniques and Rapid Revision |
Build your own media glossary with the acronyms from this guide: CCLASS, HALVE, PACE, CLAMPS, GICS, DREAM, SCREAM, PIES, TADPOLE, POOR. Convert each letter into a vivid mental image. For example, for CLAMPS, picture a giant clam wearing a tiny costume under a spotlight. The more absurd the image, the stronger the memory.
Create flash cards with the term on one side and the definition and the acronym on the reverse. Practise retrieval by looking at a still image from any advert or film and challenging yourself to identify at least three terms from each category (camera, sound, mise-en-scène, editing, representation). Short, focused revision bursts of 20 minutes followed by self-testing are more effective than re-reading notes.
Finally, use the ‘teach a friend’ method: explain terms like diegetic sound, genre conventions or Todorov’s equilibrium theory to someone else. If you can teach it clearly, you truly know it. Remember, media analysis is a skill built word by word — and this guide gives you all the words you need.
