1. Particle Theory and States of Matter | 粒子理论与物质状态
All matter is made up of tiny particles that are constantly moving. The arrangement and movement of these particles determine the state of matter.
所有物质都由不断运动的微小粒子组成。粒子的排列和运动方式决定了物质的状态。
In solids, particles vibrate around fixed positions, giving solids a definite shape and volume.
在固体中,粒子在固定位置振动,使固体具有固定的形状和体积。
In liquids, particles are close together but can slide past each other, so liquids have a fixed volume but take the shape of their container.

In gases, particles are far apart and move rapidly in all directions, so gases have no fixed shape or volume and can be compressed.

Changes of state, such as melting, boiling, condensing and freezing, involve energy transfer without changing the particles themselves.

Diffusion is the movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration, and it occurs faster in gases than in liquids.

2. Atoms, Elements and Compounds | 原子、元素和化合物
An atom is the smallest part of an element that can exist. Atoms consist of a nucleus containing protons and neutrons, surrounded by electrons in shells.

A substance that consists of only one type of atom is called an element. There are about 100 different elements shown in the periodic table.

Compounds are substances formed when two or more elements chemically combine in fixed proportions. The properties of a compound are different from those of its constituent elements.

A mixture contains two or more substances not chemically bonded together, so they can be separated by physical methods.

Chemical symbols (e.g. O for oxygen, Fe for iron) represent elements, while chemical formulae (e.g. H₂O, CO₂) represent compounds.

3. The Periodic Table | 元素周期表
The periodic table arranges elements in order of increasing atomic number (number of protons). Elements with similar properties are grouped into vertical columns called groups.

The horizontal rows are called periods. As you go across a period, elements change from metals on the left to non‑metals on the right.

Group 1 contains the alkali metals, which are very reactive and have low densities. Group 7 contains the halogens, reactive non‑metals. Group 0 (or 8) contains the noble gases, which are unreactive.

Key information you can read from each element’s box includes its atomic number, mass number and symbol. For example, carbon has atomic number 6 and mass number 12.

The periodic table helps scientists predict the properties of elements and their reactions.

4. Chemical Reactions and Equations | 化学反应与方程式
In a chemical reaction, new substances are formed, and the change is usually irreversible. Signs of a reaction include colour change, temperature change, gas production and precipitate formation.

The law of conservation of mass states that the total mass of reactants equals the total mass of products. Atoms are rearranged, not created or destroyed.

Word equations show the names of reactants and products, e.g. magnesium + oxygen → magnesium oxide.

Symbol equations use chemical formulae and must be balanced to obey the conservation of mass, e.g. 2Mg + O₂ → 2MgO.

Common types of reactions include combustion, oxidation, thermal decomposition and neutralisation.

5. Acids, Alkalis and pH | 酸、碱与 pH
Acids are substances that release hydrogen ions (H⁺) in water. They have a pH less than 7 and turn blue litmus paper red. Examples include hydrochloric acid (HCl) and sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄).
酸是在水中释放氢离子(H⁺)的物质,其 pH 值小于 7,使蓝色石蕊试纸变红。例如盐酸(HCl)和硫酸(H₂SO₄)。
Alkalis are soluble bases that release hydroxide ions (OH⁻) in water. They have a pH greater than 7 and turn red litmus paper blue. Examples include sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and potassium hydroxide (KOH).

The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral. Universal indicator shows a range of colours at different pH values.

Neutralisation is the reaction between an acid and an alkali to form a salt and water: acid + alkali → salt + water.

Everyday examples of neutralisation include using antacid tablets to relieve indigestion and treating acidic soil with lime.

6. Metals and Reactivity | 金属与反应性
Metals are typically shiny, good conductors of heat and electricity, malleable and ductile. Non‑metals are generally dull, brittle (if solid) and poor conductors.

The reactivity series ranks metals from most to least reactive. At KS3, the order includes: potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, aluminium, zinc, iron, copper, silver, gold.

Reactive metals react with acids to produce a salt and hydrogen gas. For example: zinc + hydrochloric acid → zinc chloride + hydrogen.

Metals react with oxygen to form metal oxides. This is an oxidation reaction. For example: magnesium + oxygen → magnesium oxide.

The reactivity of a metal determines how it is extracted from its ore. Very unreactive metals like gold are found native, while reactive metals require electrolysis.

7. Separation Techniques | 分离技术
Mixtures can be separated by physical methods based on the different properties of their components. Common techniques include filtration, evaporation, distillation and chromatography.

Filtration is used to separate an insoluble solid from a liquid, for example sand from water. The solid remains on the filter paper while the liquid passes through.

Evaporation removes the solvent from a solution, leaving the solid solute behind. It is suitable for obtaining a soluble salt from its solution.

Simple distillation separates a solvent from a solution by boiling and condensing. The pure solvent is collected as distillate.

Chromatography separates dissolved substances that move at different speeds through a medium. It can be used to separate dyes in ink.

Materials can be classified into natural and synthetic. Natural materials come from living things or the Earth, while synthetic materials are manufactured by chemical processes.
