📚 KS3 Edexcel Chinese: Formula and Theorem Quick Reference Handbook | KS3 Edexcel 中文:公式定理速查手册

In the study of Chinese, just like in mathematics, there are core rules and patterns that act as ‘formulas’ or ‘theorems’ to help you construct sentences, pronounce words, and write characters correctly. This handbook gathers these essential linguistic principles, providing a quick reference for KS3 Edexcel students. Mastering these will give you a solid foundation for tackling speaking, listening, reading, and writing tasks with confidence.

学习中文如同学习数学,同样存在一系列核心规则与模式,它们就像“公式”或“定理”,帮助你正确造句、发音和写字。这本手册汇总了这些关键的语言原则,为KS3 Edexcel阶段的学生提供速查参考。掌握这些内容将为你的听说读写各项任务打下坚实基础,让你应对自如。

1. Pinyin Spelling Rules | 拼音拼写规则

When ‘ü’ follows the initials j, q, x, the umlaut is dropped and it is written as ‘u’, but the pronunciation remains the same. For example, ‘jü’ becomes ‘ju’ (pronounced like ‘jü’), ‘qü’ becomes ‘qu’, and ‘xü’ becomes ‘xu’. This is a universal spelling convention to simplify writing.

当韵母’ü’跟在声母j, q, x之后时,两点省略,写成’u’,但读音不变。例如,’jü’写作’ju’,’qü’写作’qu’,’xü’写作’xu’。这是一条全球通行的拼写简化规则。

The tones of the character ‘一’ (yī) change based on the following syllable. Before a fourth tone it becomes yí (second tone); before other tones it becomes yì (fourth tone). When used alone or at the end of a word it keeps the first tone. The character ‘不’ (bù) similarly shifts to bú before a fourth tone.

汉字“一”的声调会随之变化:在第四声前读第二声(yí);在其它声调前读第四声(yì)。单独使用或在词尾时保持第一声。“不”字同样在第四声前变为第二声(bú)。

  • yī + gè → yí gè (一个)
  • yī + tiān → yì tiān (一天)
  • bù + duì → bú duì (不对)

2. Basic Sentence Structure Formula | 基本句子结构公式

The fundamental Chinese sentence follows the formula: Subject + Verb + Object (SVO), identical to English. However, time and place phrases always precede the verb. The structure expands to: Subject + Time + Place + Verb + Object. Time phrases come before place phrases when both appear.

中文基本句子遵循公式:主语 + 动词 + 宾语 (SVO),与英语相同。但时间和地点状语总是放在动词之前。扩展结构为:主语 + 时间 + 地点 + 动词 + 宾语。当两者同时出现时,时间词在地点词之前。

Example: I yesterday at school ate lunch. (English feels unnatural, but the Chinese word order is exactly that logical sequence.)

例句:我昨天在学校吃午饭。“我”主语,“昨天”时间,“在学校”地点,“吃”动词,“午饭”宾语。

  • Wǒ míngtiān zài túshūguǎn kàn shū. (I will read books in the library tomorrow.)
  • Tā xiàwǔ zài jiā xiě zuòyè. (He does homework at home in the afternoon.)

3. Radical and Character Formation Theorem | 偏旁与汉字构成定理

More than 80% of Chinese characters are phono-semantic compounds, formed by a meaning component (radical) and a sound component. Understanding the radical can help you guess the general meaning, while the phonetic part gives a clue to the pronunciation. For instance, the radical ‘氵’ (three drops of water) indicates relation to water or liquid, as seen in 河 (river), 海 (sea), 洗 (to wash).

超过80%的汉字是形声字,由表意的形旁和表音的声旁构成。理解偏旁可以帮助推测字的大概意思,而声旁则提示了发音线索。例如,偏旁“氵”表示与水或液体有关,如河、海、洗。

Radical Meaning Examples
mouth 吃 (eat), 喝 (drink), 叫 (call)
female 妈 (mother), 姐 (older sister), 她 (she)
hand 打 (hit), 找 (look for), 拉 (pull)

4. Stroke Order Rules | 笔画顺序规则

Writing characters with correct stroke order makes your handwriting more legible and helps with memorisation. The fundamental principles are: top to bottom, left to right, horizontal before vertical, outside before inside, and inside before enclosing strokes. For example, the character ‘十’ is written horizontal stroke first, then vertical. ‘国’ starts with the outer enclosure, inside elements, then the bottom seal.

按照正确的笔顺写字能让字迹更清晰,也有助于记忆汉字。基本原则是:从上到下、从左到右、先横后竖、先外后内、先中间后两边。例如,“十”先写横再写竖。“国”先写外面框,再写内部,最后封底。

A common theorem: the dot (点) is written last if it is at the top right, as in ‘戈’ or ‘我’, but written first if it is at the top left, as in ‘为’.

常见规则:点在右上角通常最后写,如“戈”“我”;点在左上角首先写,如“为”。

5. Measure Word Selection Formula | 量词搭配公式

In Chinese, a numeral cannot directly modify a noun; a measure word (classifier) must be inserted. The formula is: Number + Measure Word + Noun. The generic measure word ‘个’ works for many nouns, but specific measure words are required for natural expression. Common measure words: ‘本’ for books, ‘张’ for flat objects (paper, tables), ‘支’ for long slender objects (pens), ‘件’ for items of clothing or matters, ‘杯’ for cups of drinks, and ‘碗’ for bowls of food.

中文里数词不能直接修饰名词,必须插入量词。公式为:数字 + 量词 + 名词。通用量词“个”可用于很多名词,但地道的表达需要使用特定量词。常见量词:“本”用于书本,“张”用于平面物体(纸、桌子),“支”用于细长物体(笔),“件”用于衣服或事情,“杯”用于杯装饮品,“碗”用于碗装食物。

Measure Word Category Example
本 (běn) books, notebooks 一 本 书 (one book)
张 (zhāng) flat objects, tickets 一 张 纸 (one piece of paper)
条 (tiáo) long, flexible things 一 条 鱼 (one fish), 一 条 路 (one road)

6. Tone Sandhi Theorem | 变调规则

When two third-tone syllables occur consecutively, the first third tone changes to a second tone for ease of pronunciation, though it is still written with the third-tone mark. This is the most important tone sandhi rule. For example, ‘nǐ hǎo’ is actually pronounced ‘ní hǎo’, but pinyin remains ‘nǐ hǎo’. The same rule applies to multiple third tones in a row, where only the last retains the full third tone.

当两个三声音节连读时,第一个三声变为二声,以便发音,但书写仍保留三声号。这是最重要的变调规则。例如“你好(nǐ hǎo)”实际读作“ní hǎo”。多个三声连读时,只有最后一个保持完整三声,其余变调。

Additionally, when ‘一’ and ‘不’ change tones as described in Section 1, these belong to the broader family of tone sandhi theorems. Mastering them will make your spoken Chinese sound much more natural.

此外,“一”和“不”的变调(如第一节所述)也是变调定理的一部分。掌握它们能让你的中文口语听起来更自然。

7. Question Formation Patterns | 疑问句构成模式

There are several basic formulas to turn a statement into a question. The particle ‘吗’ is added at the end of a declarative sentence to form a yes-no question. For asking about specifics, replace the desired information with an interrogative pronoun such as 什么 (what), 谁 (who), 哪儿 (where), 什么时候 (when), 怎么 (how), 几/多少 (how many). Verb-not-verb structure (A-not-A) is also common, e.g.,

8. Negation Rules | 否定句式规则

The primary negation formulas use ‘不’ and ‘没’. ‘不’ negates present and future actions, adjectives, and habitual states. ‘没’ negates the past action ‘有’ (to have) and the completion of an action. The structure is: Subject + 不/没 + Verb/(Adjective). Remember, ‘不’ usually comes before the verb, while ‘没’ directly negates ‘有’.

基础否定句式使用“不”和“没”。“不”否定现在和将来的动作、形容词以及习惯性状态。“没”否定过去动作“有”和动作的完成。结构为:主语 + 不/没 + 动词/(形容词)。注意,“不”通常在动词前,而“没”直接否定“有”。

  • Wǒ bú shì lǎoshī. (I am not a teacher.) – ‘不’ with verb ‘是’.
  • Tā bù gāo. (He is not tall.) – ‘不’ with adjective.
  • Wǒ méi yǒu shū. (I don’t have a book.) – ‘没’ negates ‘有’.
  • Wǒ méi chī zǎofàn. (I didn’t eat breakfast.) – ‘没’ for past incompleteness.

9. Tense and Aspect Indicators | 时态与体标记

Chinese does not conjugate verbs; instead it uses time words and aspect particles. The formula for completed action is: Verb + 了. For ongoing action: 在 + Verb or Verb + 着. For experience: Verb + 过. The future is often expressed by time words (明天, 下个星期) or modal verbs (会, 要). No particle attaches to the verb itself for future tense.

中文没有动词变位,而是使用时间词和体标记。完成态公式:动词 + 了。进行态:在 + 动词 或 动词 + 着。经历态:动词 + 过。将来通常用时间词(明天、下个星期)或情态动词(会、要)表达,动词本身不加标记。

Aspect Formula Example
Completed V + 了 我吃了饭。(I ate a meal.)
Ongoing 在 + V 我在吃饭。(I am eating.)
Experience V + 过 我吃过中国菜。(I have eaten Chinese food.)

10. Common Grammar Patterns | 常用语法模式

The pivotal sentence pattern ‘让 (ràng)/叫 (jiào)/请 (qǐng) + person + action’ means to let/ask/invite someone do something. Formula: Subject + 让/叫/请 + Object + Verb. For example: 妈妈让我做作业。(Mum lets/asks me to do homework.)

兼语句式“让/叫/请 + 人 + 动作”表示让某人做某事。公式:主语 + 让/叫/请 + 宾语 + 动词。例如:妈妈让我做作业。

The comparative ‘比 (bǐ)’ follows: A + 比 + B + Adjective. For more complex comparisons: A + 比 + B + Adjective + 一点儿/多了. The superlative is formed with ‘最’.

比较句“比”公式:A + 比 + B + 形容词。复杂比较:A + 比 + B + 形容词 + 一点儿/多了。最高级用“最”。

The ‘是……的’ construction emphasizes time, place, or manner of a past action. Formula: Subject + 是 + details + 的 + Verb. Example: 我是昨天来的。(I came yesterday – emphasizing time.)

“是……的”结构强调过去动作的时间、地点或方式。公式:主语 + 是 + 细节 + 的 + 动词。例如:我是昨天来的。

11. Punctuation Theorem | 标点符号规则

Chinese uses distinct punctuation forms. The full stop is ‘。’ (a small circle), not ‘.’; the comma is ‘,’ (a teardrop with a tail), slightly different from the English comma. The enumeration comma for listing items is ‘、’ (pause mark). Quotation marks are 「」 or “” . Titles of books and articles use 《》.

中文使用独特的标点符号。句号是“。”,不是“.”;逗号是“,”;列举时用顿号“、”。引号有「」或“”。书名号是《》。

A quick theorem: never use a ‘、’ after the last item in a list; it is replaced by a comma or conjunction. For example: 我喜欢吃苹果、香蕉和橘子。

快速规则:列举的最后一个项目后面不用顿号,而用逗号或连接词。例如:我喜欢吃苹果、香蕉和橘子。

12. Word Order in Complex Sentences | 复杂句语序

In sentences with adverbial clauses, the subordinate clause (reason, condition, time) usually comes before the main clause. This creates a ‘Because…, so…’ or ‘If…, then…’ pattern using words like 因为……所以……, 虽然……但是……, 如果……就……. The formula follows Topic-Comment flow, where background information precedes the main point.

带有状语从句的句子中,从句(原因、条件、时间)通常在主句之前。形成“因为……所以……”“虽然……但是……”“如果……就……”等关联结构。公式遵循话题-说明的语流,背景信息先于主要信息。

Example: 因为昨天下雨,所以我没有去公园。(Because it rained yesterday, I didn’t go to the park.) The cause comes before the result, which is the reverse of the flexible English order.

例句:因为昨天下雨,所以我没有去公园。原因在前,结果在后,与英语语序可以前后调换不同。

The rule of postposition: modifiers always precede the modified. A relative clause must come before the noun, often marked by ‘的’. Structure: Modifier + 的 + Noun. For instance: 我昨天买的书 (the book that I bought yesterday).

修饰语前置规则:修饰语永远在被修饰语之前。定语从句必须在名词前,常用“的”标记。结构:修饰语 + 的 + 名词。例如:我昨天买的书。
