Welcome to the KS3 Edexcel Media Studies revision guide. This article summarises the core knowledge you need to understand media language, representation, audiences, institutions, and more. These concepts form the foundation for analysing any media text, from films and TV shows to advertisements and social media.
1. Media Language: Signs and Codes |
Media language is the way media texts communicate meaning through a system of signs and codes. A sign consists of two parts: the signifier (the physical form, such as a word, image, or sound) and the signified (the mental concept it represents).
Codes are sets of rules that we recognise and use to decode meaning. Technical codes include camera angles, lighting, and editing. Symbolic codes include objects, colours, and body language. Written codes involve captions, headlines, and typography.
For example, a red heart emoji uses a symbolic code: the heart shape (signifier) signifies love or affection (signified). Understanding these codes helps us read media texts more critically.
2. Denotation and Connotation |
Denotation is the literal or dictionary meaning of a sign – what you actually see or hear. For example, a poster showing a family having dinner denotes exactly that: a family eating a meal together.
Connotation refers to the associated meanings, emotions, or ideas that a sign evokes. Using the same dinner poster, the connotation might be warmth, happiness, or family unity. Connotations can differ depending on cultural context.
Analysing both denotation and connotation is a key skill: first describe what you see (denotation), then explain what it suggests or implies (connotation). This allows deeper interpretation of media messages.
3. Camera Shots and Angles |
Camera shots frame the subject in different ways, each creating a specific effect. An extreme close-up (ECU) focuses on a small detail, like an eye, to show intense emotion. A close-up (CU) shows a character’s face, conveying their feelings. A medium shot (MS) frames the subject from the waist up, often used for dialogue. A long shot (LS) shows the full body, establishing the subject’s environment. An extreme long shot (ELS) captures a vast landscape, making human figures seem small.
Camera angles also influence meaning. A high-angle shot looks down on the subject, making it appear weak or vulnerable. A low-angle shot looks up, making the subject seem powerful or dominant. An eye-level shot is neutral, creating a sense of equality.
Combining shot types and angles allows media producers to guide the audience’s attention and feelings. For example, a low-angle close-up of a villain can make them look menacing.
4. Editing and Transitions |
Editing is the process of selecting and combining shots to create sequences. The pace of editing – fast or slow – sets the rhythm and mood. Quick cuts are used in action scenes to build excitement; long takes in dramas can create tension or realism.
Continuity editing is the standard style, aiming to make cuts invisible so the story flows seamlessly. Techniques like shot/reverse shot (between two characters) and match on action maintain spatial and temporal coherence.
Transitions are the way one shot moves to the next. A straight cut is abrupt; a fade to black often signals the end of a scene or passage of time; a dissolve blends two shots, suggesting a connection or flashback. A wipe moves one shot across the screen, used for dramatic effect.
5. Sound in Media |
Sound in media is divided into diegetic and non-diegetic sound. Diegetic sound comes from within the story world: dialogue, footsteps, a car engine. Characters and audience can hear it. Non-diegetic sound is added for the audience only: background music, voice-over narration, sound effects like a dramatic sting.
Sound has many functions. Dialogue advances the plot. Sound effects create realism or emphasise actions. Music establishes mood, builds tension, or signals emotions (e.g. a heroic theme). Ambient sound (background noise like wind, traffic) sets the scene.
Analysing sound: ask whether it is diegetic or non-diegetic, what it contributes to the narrative, and how it makes the audience feel. Well-designed sound is often unnoticed but profoundly affects the viewing experience.
6. Mise-en-scène |
Mise-en-scène is a French term meaning ‘put in the scene’. It refers to everything visible in the frame: setting, costume, props, lighting, and actors’ performance. All these elements are carefully chosen to convey meaning.
Setting and props can establish time, place, and social context. For instance, a cluttered classroom with old textbooks can suggest a deprived school
