1. Media Language |

Media language refers to the specific codes and conventions used by media producers to communicate meaning. It includes everything from camera shots and editing to typography and colour choices. When you analyse a film poster, for example, you are decoding its media language – how do the images, fonts and layout work together to create a particular message? Understanding media language helps you become a critical consumer rather than a passive viewer.

  • Semiotics: The study of signs and symbols in media texts. /
  • Signifier/Signified: The signifier is the physical form (word, image), the signified is the mental concept it represents. /

2. Genre |

Genre is a way of categorising media products based on shared features, such as setting, character types, narrative patterns and iconography. For instance, a western film typically includes cowboys, desert landscapes and saloon bars. Genres create expectations in the audience and help producers target specific viewers. However, genres can also mix and evolve – a sci‑fi comedy blends elements of both science fiction and humour to create something fresh.

  • Hybrid genre: Combines two or more genres, e.g. romantic comedy. /
  • Iconography: Visual cues that identify a genre, like spaceships in sci‑fi. /

3. Representation |

Representation is how media texts portray people, places, events and ideas. It is not a simple mirror of reality – media producers select, construct and mediate what we see. Think about how teenagers are represented in a news report versus a teen drama: the choices of costume, dialogue and camera angle all shape the audience’s perception. Analysing representation means asking who is included, who is excluded, and what stereotypes might be reinforced or challenged.

  • Stereotype: A simplified, often exaggerated representation of a social group. /
  • Under‑representation: When a group is shown less frequently than in real society. /

4. Audience | 受众

Media texts are created for audiences – the people who watch, read, listen or interact with them. Producers think carefully about who their target audience is, considering age, gender, interests and lifestyle. Audience theories help us understand how people engage with media. The uses and gratifications model, for example, suggests that audiences actively choose media to meet needs such as information, personal identity, social interaction and entertainment.

  • Active audience: Engages critically, makes own interpretations. /
  • Passive audience: Accepts messages without question. /

5. Narrative | 叙事

Narrative is the way a story is told – its structure, plot and the manipulation of time. Most media texts have a narrative, whether it is a three‑minute music video or a feature film. A classic narrative theory is Todorov’s equilibrium model: a state of balance is disrupted, recognised, and then a new equilibrium is restored. Understanding narrative helps you predict how a story might develop and appreciate why certain events are shown in a particular order.

  • Linear narrative: Events unfold in chronological order. /
  • Non‑linear narrative: Events are presented out of chronological order, e.g. flashbacks. /

6. Media Institutions |

Media institutions are the organisations that produce and distribute media texts. They can be huge global corporations like the BBC, Disney or Netflix, or small independent companies. Institutions influence the content we see through their ownership, funding models and regulatory guidelines. For instance, the BBC has a public service remit to inform, educate and entertain, which shapes the types of programmes it makes.

  • Public service broadcaster (PSB): Funded by the public, aims to serve all audiences. /
  • Conglomerate: A large corporation that owns multiple media companies. /

7. Media Forms |

Media forms are the different types of media products, each with its own set of conventions. Common forms include film, television, radio, newspapers, magazines, video games, music videos and online platforms. Each form has a distinct ‘language’ – a news website uses headlines, hyperlinks and rolling updates, while a podcast relies on spoken word, sound effects and silence. Recognising these differences is the first step in media analysis.

  • Platform: The technology or service used to deliver media content, e.g. YouTube, Instagram.

8. Codes and Conventions |

Codes are the technical, symbolic and written signs that create meaning in a media text. Conventions are the accepted or expected ways of doing things within a particular form or genre. For example, a horror film convention is that the ‘final girl’ often survives; a newspaper convention is the masthead at the top of the front page. Together, codes and conventions allow audiences to quickly recognise what kind of text they are engaging with.

  • Technical codes: Camera work, lighting, editing. /
  • Symbolic codes: Objects, colours, body language that carry meaning. /

9. Denotation and Connotation |

Denotation is the literal, descriptive meaning of a sign – what you actually see or hear. Connotation is the deeper, associated meaning that is culturally learned. A red rose denotes a type of flower, but it can connote love, romance or even political parties depending on the context. Media analysts always look beyond the surface to uncover the connotations that shape audience feelings and attitudes.

  • Polysemic: A sign that can have multiple possible meanings. /

10. Mise‑en‑scène |

Mise‑en‑scène is a French term meaning ‘placed on stage’. It describes everything visible within the frame: setting, props, costume, make‑up, lighting and figure positioning. In a film clip, analyse the mise‑en‑scène by asking: what does the lighting tell you about the mood? Why are certain props included? How does the costume help to define a character’s personality? Every element is there for a reason.

  • High‑key lighting: Bright, low contrast, often for comedies. /
  • Low‑key lighting: Strong shadows, high contrast, common in thrillers. /

11. Camera Shots, Angles and Movement |

Camera work is a core technical code. Shot sizes range from extreme long shots (showing vast landscapes) to extreme close‑ups (focusing on a detail like an eye). Camera angles position the viewer: a low angle makes a subject look powerful, while a high angle can make them seem vulnerable. Camera movements – pans, tilts, tracks or zooms – guide our attention and create dynamic energy.

Shot → Angle → Movement → Meaning

12. Editing and Sound |

Editing is the process of selecting and combining shots to create a sequence. It controls pace, continuity and the relationship between images. A fast‑cut montage can create excitement, while a long take allows an uninterrupted moment of tension. Sound, too, is a powerful tool: diegetic sound comes from within the story world (dialogue, footsteps), while non‑diegetic sound is added for the audience (soundtrack, voice‑over). Together they build the media text’s atmosphere and meaning.

  • Diegetic sound: Sound the characters can hear. /
  • Non‑diegetic sound: Sound only the audience hears, e.g. background music. /
