1. Line | 线条
A line is a mark made by a moving point. It can vary in width, length, direction and character. In art, lines can be actual (drawn or painted) or implied (the edge of a shape or a visual path created by the arrangement of objects). Lines create outlines, suggest movement and express emotion. A quick, zigzag line can feel energetic, while a slow, wavy line can feel calm.
Typical lines you will experiment with at KS3 include contour lines (which define the outer edges of an object), hatching and cross-hatching (parallel or intersecting lines used to create tone), and gesture lines (quick, loose marks that capture movement). When analysing an artwork, ask yourself whether the lines are thick or thin, smooth or rough, flowing or broken – and what mood this creates.
2. Shape | 形状
A shape is a two-dimensional area with a defined boundary. Shapes are created when a line encloses an area, or when an area of colour or texture meets a different one. They can be geometric (circles, squares, triangles) or organic (free-form, irregular shapes found in nature). Shapes are fundamental building blocks in composition and can be used to simplify complex forms.
In your projects, you will practise positive shapes (the main subject or figure) and negative shapes (the space around and between the subject). Recognising negative shapes helps you draw more accurately. For example, when drawing a chair, the spaces between the legs and the seat are just as important as the chair itself. Artists like Henri Matisse used bold, flat shapes to create vibrant cut-out compositions.
3. Form | 形体
Form refers to objects that have three dimensions – height, width and depth. While a shape is flat, a form has volume and takes up space. In drawing and painting, we create the illusion of form on a two-dimensional surface by using tone, shading and perspective. Sculpture, ceramics and installation art involve actual, tactile form.
KS3 students learn to transform basic shapes into forms: a circle becomes a sphere, a square becomes a cube, a triangle becomes a cone or a pyramid. Using a single light source, you apply highlights, mid-tones, core shadows, reflected light and cast shadows to make your drawings look solid and realistic. Observational drawing exercises with still-life objects are an excellent way to develop this skill.
4. Colour | 色彩
Colour is produced when light reflects off an object and enters our eyes. It has three main properties: hue (the name of the colour, such as red), value (how light or dark it is) and intensity (how bright or dull it is, also called saturation). Understanding colour theory helps you mix paints accurately and create specific moods in your artwork.
The colour wheel is a key tool. Primary colours (red, yellow, blue) cannot be created by mixing other colours. Secondary colours (orange, green, purple) are made by mixing two primaries. Tertiary colours come from mixing a primary with a neighbouring secondary. Complementary colours, which sit opposite each other on the wheel (like red and green), create strong contrast when placed side by side. Warm colours (reds, oranges, yellows) advance and feel energetic, while cool colours (blues, greens, purples) recede and feel calm.
5. Tone and Value |
Tone, also called value, describes how light or dark something is. It is one of the most powerful elements for creating depth, contrast and drama. Tone is independent of colour – a dark blue and a dark red can have similar tonal values. A strong understanding of tone helps you produce realistic drawings and paintings that communicate form and atmosphere effectively.
At KS3, you will practise creating a tonal scale from white through various greys to black. This helps you see and reproduce subtle differences in light and shade. Cross-hatching, stippling and blending are techniques used to build up tone. Chiaroscuro, an Italian term meaning ‘light-dark’, is a dramatic use of strong tonal contrasts used by artists such as Caravaggio and Rembrandt. When examining an artwork, look for the lightest areas (highlights) and the darkest areas (shadows) – the range between them is the tonal range.
6. Texture | 肌理
Texture refers to the surface quality of an object – how it feels or appears to feel. Actual texture is the real, tactile surface you can touch (such as rough bark, smooth glass or thick impasto paint). Visual or implied texture is an illusion created on a flat surface using marks, brushstrokes and patterns that make you imagine how something would feel.
In your sketchbook, you can create texture through frottage (rubbing a crayon over a textured surface), collage (layering different materials), sgraffito (scratching through a layer of paint) or simply by varied mark-making with pencil and pen. Describing texture accurately in annotation enriches your analysis: is it bumpy, silky, gritty, fluffy, jagged or spongy? Observing textures closely and recreating them builds both technical skill and a richer visual vocabulary.
7. Space | 空间
Space is the area around, between and within objects. In two-dimensional art, space is an illusion that makes a flat surface appear to have depth. Artists use techniques such as overlapping, size variation, placement on the picture plane, atmospheric perspective and linear perspective to create the feeling of space. Negative space – the empty area surrounding the main subject – is just as important as the positive space occupied by the subject itself.
At KS3 level, you will often use a foreground, middle ground and background to organise spaces. Objects in the foreground are larger and more detailed, while those in the background are smaller and often lighter or bluer due to atmospheric effects. One-point perspective, where all parallel lines converge at a single vanishing point on the horizon line, is a key drawing convention introduced in Year 7 or 8. Learning to balance positive and negative space improves your compositions dramatically.
8. Balance | 平衡
Balance is a principle of design concerned with the distribution of visual weight within a composition. It gives a sense of stability and can be symmetrical, asymmetrical or radial. Symmetrical balance is like a mirror image, with elements repeated evenly on both sides of a central axis. Asymmetrical balance uses dissimilar objects that have equal visual interest or weight to create an equilibrium that feels more dynamic. Radial balance radiates from a central point, like the petals of a daisy.
When you plan a composition, think about how the elements are arranged. A large shape on one side might be balanced by a smaller, intensely coloured shape or a textured area on the other. Too much empty space on one side can make the artwork feel lopsided. Experimenting with cut-paper collage is a quick way to test different balance arrangements before committing to a final design.
9. Contrast | 对比
Contrast occurs when elements that are very different are placed close together. It creates visual excitement, directs the viewer’s attention and can emphasise a focal point. Contrast can be achieved through colour (complementary pairs, light against dark), tone (highlights next to deep shadows), texture (smooth beside rough), shape (geometric next to organic) and size (large versus small).
Without contrast, an artwork can appear flat and uninteresting. Thoughtful use of contrast helps tell the viewer where to look first. In a portrait, a high tonal contrast on the face immediately draws the eye. In a landscape, a bright red boat on a dull grey sea creates a striking point of interest. At KS3, you can develop your use of contrast by trying out very limited palettes or by drawing the same subject with entirely different mark-making approaches.
10. Unity and Harmony |
Unity is the feeling that all parts of an artwork fit together and belong. A unified composition feels complete, with no single element appearing out of place. Harmony refers to a pleasing arrangement of parts, often achieved by repeating colours, shapes or textures, or by using a limited colour palette where hues are closely related on the colour wheel. While contrast creates excitement, unity and harmony bring a sense of calm and order.
Artists create unity through repetition, proximity (placing elements close together) and continuation (a line or edge that flows from one object to another). A painting using variations of blue, green and teal feels harmonious. Adding a small accent of orange, however, can make the blues feel even more unified by providing a contrast that defines the overall scheme. When reviewing your own work, ask whether any area feels disconnected or distracting – this often signals a lack of unity.
11. Rhythm and Pattern |
Rhythm in art is created by the repetition of elements such as lines, shapes, colours or textures to suggest movement. It guides the viewer’s eye across the composition in a deliberate way, much like the beat in music. Pattern is a decorative design made from repeated motifs or units. Patterns can be regular (predictable, even repeats) or irregular (varied spacing or changing motifs). Both rhythm and pattern add visual interest and structure.
At KS3, you might explore rhythm by printing a repeated motif across a surface or by drawing flowing lines that echo each other. Looking at work by artists such as Bridget Riley (Op Art rhythms) or William Morris (intricate textile patterns) reveals how rhythm can be hypnotic, energetic or calming. When designing a pattern, consider the motif, the spacing and the direction of repeats to control how energetic or restful the result feels.
12. Proportion and Scale |
Proportion is the relationship in size between different parts of a composition or between a part and the whole. In figure drawing, for instance, we use head lengths as a unit to measure the idealised proportions of the human body. Scale refers to the size of an object in relation to its normal or expected size, or in relation to other objects within the artwork. Playing with proportion and scale can create surprise, emphasise an idea or convey a message.
Exaggerating proportions can add humour, express a critical viewpoint or draw attention to a particular feature – think of the oversized heads in caricature. Surrealist artists like Rene Magritte famously altered scale, placing a giant apple filling an entire room to unsettle the viewer. In your own projects, try drawing an everyday object at an unexpected scale, or deliberately distort proportions to emphasise an emotion. Always measure and compare when working observationally to keep your proportions accurate.
