1. Microscopy Formulas |

The light microscope is used to view cells and tiny structures. To work out how magnified an image is, you multiply the powers of the two lenses.

Total Magnification = Eyepiece Magnification × Objective Magnification

When a scale bar or ruler is used, you can find the real size of a specimen by dividing the measured image size by the total magnification. Remember to convert units (1 mm = 1000 µm) if necessary.

Actual Size = Image Size ÷ Total Magnification

2. Cell Theory |

All living organisms are made up of one or more cells. Cells are the basic building blocks of life and carry out all life processes.

New cells are produced only from existing cells, by the process of cell division. This principle underpins growth, repair and reproduction in organisms.

3. Photosynthesis Equation |

Plants and some microorganisms produce their own food using light energy. The word equation summarises the raw materials and products of photosynthesis.

Carbon Dioxide + Water → Glucose + Oxygen

Photosynthesis takes place in the chloroplasts, and chlorophyll absorbs the sunlight needed to drive the reaction. This process stores energy in the glucose molecule.

4. Respiration Equations |

Respiration is the chemical reaction that releases energy from glucose. It happens in all living cells and can be aerobic (using oxygen) or anaerobic (without oxygen).

Aerobic: Glucose + Oxygen → Carbon Dioxide + Water (+ Energy)

In animals, anaerobic respiration produces lactic acid and a small amount of energy. In yeast and some plants, it produces ethanol and carbon dioxide (fermentation).

Anaerobic (animals): Glucose → Lactic Acid (+ Energy)

Anaerobic (yeast): Glucose → Ethanol + Carbon Dioxide (+ Energy)

5. Enzyme Principles |

Enzymes are biological catalysts made of protein. They speed up chemical reactions by lowering the activation energy, without being used up themselves.

The lock-and-key model explains enzyme action: the substrate fits into the enzyme’s active site. If the active site changes shape (denatured), the enzyme can no longer work.

Temperature and pH strongly affect enzyme activity. Each enzyme has an optimum temperature (often around 37 °C in humans) and an optimum pH. Extremes of heat or pH cause irreversible denaturation.

6. Digestive System & Nutrient Absorption |

Large insoluble food molecules must be broken down into small soluble molecules by digestive enzymes so they can be absorbed into the blood. Amylase breaks down starch into sugars, protease breaks down protein into amino acids, and lipase breaks down fats into fatty acids and glycerol.

Absorption mainly occurs in the small intestine. Its inner lining is folded into villi, which greatly increase the surface area for efficient diffusion of nutrients. A thin wall and a dense capillary network also speed up absorption.

7. Diffusion and Osmosis Principles |

Diffusion is the net movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration, down a concentration gradient. It is a passive process requiring no energy.

Osmosis is a special type of diffusion involving water molecules moving across a selectively permeable membrane from a dilute solution to a more concentrated one. It is crucial for water uptake in plant roots and for cell turgidity.

8. Ecology: Food Chains and Energy Transfer |

In a food chain, arrows show the direction of energy flow. Producers (green plants) convert light energy into chemical energy; consumers obtain energy by eating other organisms.

At each trophic level, a large proportion of energy is lost as heat through respiration, movement and metabolic processes. Typically only about 10% of the energy is passed on to the next level. This limits the number of steps in a food chain and explains pyramid-shaped energy pyramids.

Energy transfer efficiency ≈ 10% per trophic level

BMI is a simple measure used to assess whether a person’s weight is in a healthy range relative to their height. The formula is easy to apply.

BMI = Body Mass (kg) ÷ (Height in metres)²

BMI = 体重 (千克) ÷ (身高 (米))²

A BMI value below 18.5 suggests underweight, 18.5–24.9 is considered healthy, 25–29.9 overweight, and 30 or above indicates obesity. Keep in mind that athletes with high muscle mass may have a high BMI without excess body fat.

10. Genetics Basics |

Genes, located on chromosomes, carry the instructions for inherited characteristics. Alleles are different versions of a gene. An allele can be dominant (always expressed if present) or recessive (only expressed when two copies are present).

We use Punnett squares to predict the probability of offspring inheriting certain traits. For example, if both parents are heterozygous (Tt), the expected genotype ratio in offspring is 1 TT : 2 Tt : 1 tt, and the phenotype ratio for a dominant trait is 3 : 1.

The base-pairing rule in DNA is also a fundamental principle: adenine (A) always pairs with thymine (T), and cytosine (C) pairs with guanine (G). This ensures accurate replication.
