📚 KS3 OCR Economics: Core Knowledge Summary | KS3 OCR

Economics helps us understand how people, businesses and governments make choices when resources are limited. This KS3 OCR guide covers the essential ideas you need to know, from scarcity and supply and demand to money and international trade. Each section presents a key concept clearly so you can build a strong foundation for future study.

1. Scarcity and Choice |

Scarcity is the basic economic problem: we have unlimited wants but only limited resources to satisfy them. Because we cannot have everything, every society must make choices about what to produce, how to produce it and for whom to produce it.

When you decide to spend your pocket money on a video game rather than a cinema ticket, you face scarcity. Your time is also scarce – studying economics means you cannot use that same hour to play football. Economists call this a trade‑off.

2. Opportunity Cost |

Opportunity cost is the value of the next best alternative you give up when you make a choice. It is not simply money – it can be time, enjoyment or any benefit you miss. Understanding opportunity cost helps individuals and businesses make better decisions.

If a government chooses to build a new motorway instead of a hospital, the opportunity cost is the improved health care the hospital would have provided. For a student, the opportunity cost of doing homework might be the leisure time given up.

3. Needs and Wants |

Needs are goods and services essential for survival, such as food, water, shelter and clothing. Wants are things we desire but do not need to stay alive – smartphones, holidays and branded trainers are typical examples. The distinction is important because resources are often first directed at meeting needs.

In economics, our wants are unlimited and change over time. Advertising, social media and new technology constantly create new wants. Even when our basic needs are met, we always find something else we would like to have.

4. Goods and Services |

Goods are physical items you can touch and own, like a loaf of bread or a bicycle. Services are activities that provide value but do not result in ownership – haircuts, bus journeys and online streaming are services. Both satisfy human wants.

Goods can be divided into consumer goods (bought by individuals) and capital goods (used by businesses to make other products, such as machinery). Services can be personal (a doctor’s consultation) or commercial (delivery by a logistics company).

5. Factors of Production |

To produce any good or service, four factors of production are needed. Each plays a unique role, and their rewards are shown below.

Factor Description Reward
Land All natural resources – soil, minerals, oil, water, forests. Rent
Labour Human effort, both physical and mental, used in production. Wages / Salaries
Capital Man‑made tools, machinery, buildings and equipment. Interest
Enterprise The ability to organise the other factors and take risks. Profit

Economies must combine these factors efficiently. If a country lacks one factor, it may have to import resources or develop alternatives. Entrepreneurial skill is especially important for innovation and job creation.

6. Economic Sectors |

Production is grouped into three main sectors. The primary sector extracts raw materials directly from nature – farming, fishing, mining and forestry. The secondary sector manufactures goods by transforming raw materials – car assembly, baking, construction.

The tertiary sector provides services. It includes retail, education, healthcare, banking and tourism. As economies develop, employment typically shifts from primary to secondary and eventually to tertiary. In the UK, around 80% of workers are in the tertiary sector.

7. Supply and Demand |

Demand is the quantity of a good or service that consumers are willing and able to buy at different prices. The law of demand states that, all else being equal, as price rises, quantity demanded falls. Supply is the quantity producers are willing to sell; as price rises, quantity supplied usually increases.

Shifts in demand can be caused by changes in income, tastes, advertising or the price of related goods. For example, if a celebrity endorses a brand of trainers, demand for those trainers shifts to the right (increases at every price).

Supply shifts when production costs change, technology improves or the number of sellers changes. A good harvest increases the supply of wheat, moving the supply curve to the right.

8. Price Mechanism |

The price of most goods and services is determined by the interaction of supply and demand in a market. The equilibrium price is where the quantity demanded equals the quantity supplied. At this point, there is no shortage or surplus.

If the price is set above equilibrium, a surplus occurs – there is more supplied than demanded, so firms may lower prices. If the price is below equilibrium, a shortage develops, and prices tend to rise. Prices act as signals to both buyers and sellers.

9. Money and Banking |

Money serves three main functions: a medium of exchange (we use it to buy things), a unit of account (it measures the value of goods) and a store of value (it can be saved and used later). Before money, people relied on barter, which was inefficient because both parties had to want what the other offered.

Banks play a crucial role in the economy. They accept deposits from savers and provide loans to borrowers. The interest rate is the cost of borrowing money or the reward for saving. Central banks, like the Bank of England, manage the country’s money supply and set the base interest rate to keep inflation under control.

10. Personal Finance and Budgeting |

Personal finance is about managing your own money. A budget is a plan that shows expected income and expenditure over a period. Budgeting helps you avoid overspending and ensures you can cover essential needs while saving for future goals.

Income can come from wages, allowances, interest or gifts. Expenditure includes fixed costs (rent, subscriptions) and variable costs (food, entertainment). A balanced budget means income equals expenditure; a surplus means income exceeds expenditure; a deficit means you are spending more than you earn.

11. Employment and Unemployment |

Employment means having a paid job, whether full‑time, part‑time or self‑employed. The labour market is where workers offer their skills and employers offer jobs. Wages are determined by the demand for and supply of labour.

Unemployment occurs when people who are willing and able to work cannot find a job. It can be caused by a lack of demand in the economy, technological change, or workers’ skills not matching available jobs. High unemployment reduces people’s living standards and can increase government spending on benefits.

12. Economic Growth and International Trade |

Economic growth means an increase in the value of goods and services produced by an economy over time. It is often measured by Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Growth allows higher living standards, more jobs and more tax revenue for public services. However, rapid growth can harm the environment.

Countries trade because no single nation can produce everything it needs efficiently. International trade allows countries to specialise in what they are best at producing and trade the surplus. Imports are goods bought from abroad; exports are goods sold to other countries. Specialisation and trade increase global output and give consumers more choice.
