1. What is Economics? |

Economics is the social science that studies how people choose to use limited resources to satisfy their unlimited wants. It examines the decisions made by individuals, families, firms and governments. At its heart, economics is about making choices when we cannot have everything we desire.

Economists divide the subject into two main branches: microeconomics and macroeconomics. Microeconomics focuses on the behaviour of individual consumers and businesses, such as how a bakery sets the price of bread. Macroeconomics looks at the whole economy—issues like inflation, unemployment and economic growth.

2. Scarcity and the Economic Problem |

Scarcity is the fundamental economic problem. It means that resources such as land, labour, capital and entrepreneurship are limited, while human wants for goods and services are virtually endless. Because of scarcity, every society must answer three basic questions: What to produce? How to produce? For whom to produce?

To help understand scarcity, think about your own life. You have a limited amount of time after school—perhaps two hours. You cannot simultaneously complete your homework, play a video game and practice piano for the full two hours. You must choose how to allocate your scarce time among competing activities.

The economic problem is sometimes illustrated using the concept of opportunity cost, which we explore in the next section. Recognising scarcity helps us realise that every choice involves a trade-off.

3. Opportunity Cost |

Opportunity cost is the value of the next best alternative that you give up when making a choice. It is not simply the money you spend; it includes all the benefits you could have gained from the best alternative. For example, if you use your savings to buy a new smartphone, the opportunity cost might be the holiday trip you could have taken with that money.

Understanding opportunity cost is crucial for making rational decisions. When a government decides to spend more on healthcare, the opportunity cost could be less spending on education or infrastructure. Individuals constantly face such trade-offs, and economics helps us weigh costs and benefits.

We can express the concept mathematically (without complex equations):

Opportunity Cost = Value of Best Alternative Foregone

4. Demand and Supply |

Demand refers to the quantity of a good or service that consumers are willing and able to buy at various prices over a given period. The law of demand states that, ceteris paribus, as the price of a good rises, the quantity demanded falls, and vice versa. This is because higher prices reduce consumers’ purchasing power and encourage them to switch to substitutes.

Supply represents the quantity that producers are willing and able to sell at different prices. The law of supply states that, all else being equal, as the price increases, the quantity supplied also increases. Producers are motivated by profit; higher prices offer a greater incentive to supply more.

The following table shows a simple demand and supply schedule for notebooks:

Price per notebook (£) Quantity Demanded Quantity Supplied
2 100 20
3 75 45
4 50 50
5 30 60

The table demonstrates that as price rises, quantity demanded falls while quantity supplied rises. You can see that at a price of £4, quantity demanded equals quantity supplied—this is the equilibrium point.

5. Market Equilibrium |

Market equilibrium occurs when the quantity demanded equals the quantity supplied at a particular price. At this point, there is no tendency for the price to change, and the market is said to clear. In our notebook example, the equilibrium price is £4 and the equilibrium quantity is 50 units.

If the price is set above equilibrium, say at £5, quantity supplied (60) exceeds quantity demanded (30), creating a surplus. This surplus pressures sellers to lower the price. Conversely, a price below equilibrium, such as £2, leads to a shortage (demand 100 vs supply 20), driving the price up. The forces of demand and supply move the market towards equilibrium.

6. Introduction to Personal Finance |

Personal finance is a practical area of economics that deals with managing your own money. It involves budgeting, saving, borrowing and spending wisely. Learning these skills early can help you avoid debt and build wealth over time.

A simple budget lists your income (e.g., pocket money, part-time job earnings) and your expenses (snacks, entertainment, saving goals). The key is to ensure your spending does not exceed your income. Setting aside a portion of income as savings is a smart habit—even a small amount saved regularly can grow through compound interest.

Borrowing can be useful for large purchases but comes with a cost: interest. Understanding the difference between needs and wants helps you make better financial decisions. For instance, a new school bag is a need, while a designer version is a want. Prioritising needs leads to responsible financial behaviour.

7. Production and Consumption |

Production is the process of creating goods and services to satisfy human wants. It combines the factors of production—land (natural resources), labour (workers), capital (machinery and tools) and enterprise (entrepreneurs who bring everything together). Consumption is the act of using these goods and services to obtain satisfaction or utility.
