1. Map Skills and Direction | 地图技能与方向
A map is a scaled representation of a part of the Earth’s surface. Understanding direction is the first step in map reading. The four cardinal points are north, south, east and west, often shown by a compass rose or a north arrow. We also use intermediate directions, such as northeast and southwest, to give more precise locations. On Ordnance Survey maps, north is always at the top unless stated otherwise.

To obtain a six-figure reference, we first read the eastings (the numbers along the bottom), then the northings (the numbers along the side), and then divide each side of the square into ten imaginary parts.

Weathering processes, such as freeze-thaw and biological weathering, weaken cliffs before they are eroded.
