2. Question 1: Defining Media Language |

Question: Define the term ‘media language’. (2 marks)

A secure definition must go beyond simply saying ‘it is how media communicates’. Media language refers to the systematic use of codes and conventions within a media text to construct meaning. For full marks you should mention that it encompasses visual codes (such as colour, costume and facial expression), technical codes (like camera angles and lighting), audio codes (sound effects, music) and written language. The mark scheme rewards a definition that shows clear understanding of these elements working together to guide the audience’s interpretation.

The two marks are typically allocated: one for a general statement linking codes to meaning, and a second for expanding with specific categories of codes. Therefore, a model answer would be: ‘Media language is the system of visual, technical and audio codes used by media producers to communicate ideas and create meaning for the audience.’

3. Question 2: The Four Framework Areas |

Question: Name the four areas of the media theoretical framework. (4 marks)

The WJEC specification requires you to know these four areas accurately. They are: Media Language, Representation, Audience and Institution. Each area is worth one mark. It is not enough to give vague equivalents; for example, ‘Institution’ is preferred over ‘Industry’ in WJEC mark schemes, though sometimes ‘Industry’ is accepted in later key stages. At KS3, using the exact terminology shows you have revised the core framework.

A model answer simply lists: ‘The four areas are Media Language, Representation, Audience and Institution.’ Spelling counts – if you write ‘represantation’ you might lose the mark even if the examiner understands your intention. It is also good practice to mentally link each area to a definition: Media Language concerns how meaning is made; Representation involves how people, places and ideas are portrayed; Audience addresses who the text is for and how they respond; Institution covers the organisations that create and distribute media.

4. Question 3: Colour Codes in a Film Poster |

Question: Study the film poster for the teen comedy ‘Summer Vibes’. The poster features a bright orange background with two smiling teenagers in the foreground, wearing casual summer clothes. The film title appears in bold, playful pink lettering at the bottom. Identify one use of colour and explain its effect. (4 marks)

One effective choice is the dominant orange background. Orange connotes warmth, energy and optimism. By saturating the poster with this colour, the designers instantly signal that the film is upbeat and fun, which appeals directly to a teenage audience looking for entertainment. The warm tone also evokes summer and holiday vibes, reinforcing the film’s title and genre.

You could also select the pink typography. Pink is often associated with playfulness, romance or youthfulness. In this poster, the bold pink title stands out against the orange, creating a cheerful contrast that suggests the film is light-hearted. To reach four marks, identify the colour, say what it connotes, and link that connotation clearly to how it positions the film for the teenage target audience. For instance: ‘The bright orange background connotes excitement and warmth, suggesting the film will be fun and energetic for teenagers.’

5. Question 4: Facial Expression and Teen Representation |

Question: In the same poster for ‘Summer Vibes’, explain how the characters’ facial expressions are used to represent teenagers. (4 marks)

The two teenagers are shown with wide, genuine smiles and bright eyes. This use of positive facial expression constructs a representation of teenagers as happy, carefree and socially connected. The smiles signal that the characters are enjoying a moment of friendship and fun, which aligns with a dominant media representation of teenage life as a time of excitement and bonding.

However, a top-band answer might also note that this is a selective representation. By focusing only on happy, attractive teens, the poster reinforces a stereotypical view that teenage life is always about leisure and joy. It omits the more complex realities of adolescence, such as stress or identity struggles. You could argue the representation is idealised to sell the film as an aspirational escape. For four marks, identify the expression, describe what it connotes, and critically comment on how that shapes the audience’s view of teenagers.

6. Question 5: Stereotype Definition and Example |

Question: Explain what is meant by ‘stereotype’ and give an example from a media text you have studied. (4 marks)
