1. Aristotle’s Poetics: The Six Elements of Tragedy |
Tragedy = Plot + Character + Thought + Diction + Melody + Spectacle
Aristotle’s foundational theorem states that every tragedy comprises six hierarchically ordered components. Each element contributes to the unified mimesis of a serious action.
Plot (Mythos): The arrangement of incidents; the soul of tragedy. It must be whole (beginning, middle, end), with peripeteia and anagnorisis.
Character (Ethos): Agents of action, defined by moral choice. Protagonist should be noble yet flawed (hamartia).
Thought (Dianoia): The intellectual content – themes, arguments, and underlying ideas conveyed through speech.
Diction (Lexis): The expression of meaning through words; the quality of verbal texture, metre, and rhetorical devices.
Melody (Melos): The musical elements: chorus odes, instrumental accompaniment, rhythm, and vocal tone shaping emotional response.
Spectacle (Opsis): The visual dimension – set, costume, lighting, and physical staging. Aristotle deems it the least artistic yet still integral.
2. Freytag’s Pyramid: Five-Act Dramatic Structure |
Exposition → Rising Action → Climax → Falling Action → Denouement
Gustav Freytag’s 1863 model derives from classical five-act form, mapping the trajectory of dramatic tension as a geometric pyramid. It remains a key ‘formula’ for play structure analysis.
Exposition: Introduces setting, characters, and the status quo. The inciting incident plants the seed of conflict.
Rising Action: Complication unfolds; obstacles intensify, building suspense towards the central crisis.
Climax: The turning point of irreversible change; the moment of highest tension and the protagonist’s decisive act.
Falling Action: Consequences unravel; forces of opposition close in, leading towards resolution.
Denouement: The unknotting or catastrophe; order is restored or destroyed, the new equilibrium is revealed.
3. Stanislavski’s System: Given Circumstances and the Magic If | 斯坦尼斯拉夫斯基体系:“规定情境”与“假使”
Given Circumstances + Magic If = Truthful Performance
Constantin Stanislavski’s system is a psycho-physical ‘theorem’ for the actor. It anchors character creation in rigorous analysis of the play’s world and a transformative imaginative leap.
Given Circumstances: The totality of facts extracted from the text – time, place, social condition, relationships. The actor must absorb these as concrete reality.
Magic If: ‘What would I do if I were this character in these circumstances?’ It activates the actor’s emotional memory and organic impulses, bypassing mechanical imitation.
Truthful Performance: Emerges when action is driven by inner justification, not outward cliché. Subtext and the ‘inner monologue’ radiate authentic life.
4. Brecht’s Epic Theatre: Verfremdungseffekt (V-Effect) |
V-Effect = Distance + Historicisation + Gestus
Bertolt Brecht’s political theatre rests on a ‘formula’ that prevents emotional absorption. The spectator must remain critically conscious, seeing the stage action as a changeable social construct.
Distance: Techniques like direct address, placards, narration, and exposed lighting break theatrical illusion, reminding the audience they are in a theatre.
Historicisation: Presenting events as belonging to a specific historical period, thereby denaturalising them and opening them to scrutiny.
Gestus: A compound of gesture and social attitude that reveals the power relations and ideological contradictions within a moment of action.
5. Laban’s Eight Effort Actions: A Movement Theorem |
Movement = f(Weight, Time, Space, Flow)
Rudolf Laban formulated movement as a combination of four motion factors, each with two polarities. The resulting eight ‘Effort Actions’ form the actor’s physical vocabulary.
Weight: Firm or Light. Firm engages strong muscular energy; Light minimises pressure, appearing delicate or buoyant.
Time: Sudden or Sustained. Sudden implies quick, urgent motion; Sustained unfolds leisurely, controlled.
Space: Direct or Indirect. Direct focuses on a single point in space; Indirect meanders, encompassing multi-focal awareness.
Flow: Bound or Free. Bound flow is controlled, stoppable at any moment; Free flow is released, difficult to arrest suddenly.
The Eight Effort Actions: Press (Firm, Direct, Sustained, Bound), Wring (Firm, Indirect, Sustained, Bound), Dab (Light, Direct, Sudden, Bound), Glide (Light, Direct, Sustained, Free), Punch (Firm, Direct, Sudden, Bound), Slash (Firm, Indirect, Sudden, Free), Flick (Light, Indirect, Sudden, Bound), Float (Light, Indirect, Sustained, Free).
6. Grotowski’s Poor Theatre: Via Negativa |
Theatre = Actor – (Costume + Set + Lighting + Makeup + Separate Stage)
Jerzy Grotowski’s theorem strips theatre to its irreducible core: the live encounter between actor and spectator. The actor undergoes a process of elimination (via negativa) to reveal authentic impulses.
Via Negativa: Rather than accumulating skills, the actor removes blocks, habits, and masks. This discipline eradicates the ‘personal daily self’ to access a deeper psycho-physical truth.
Actor-Spectator Relationship: With no scenic distractions, the actor’s body and voice become the sole expressive instrument, creating a direct, often ritualistic transaction with the audience.
Holy Actor: Grotowski’s performer is characterised by trance-like commitment, gifting their body as a ‘living flame’, abandoning safety to achieve transcendence.
7. Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed: Spect-Actor and Forum Theatre |
Spect-Actor = Spectator + Action
Augusto Boal’s liberatory formula transforms passive onlookers into active participants. The ‘spect-actor’ intervenes, rehearses alternatives, and prefigures social transformation.
Forum Theatre: A rehearsal for revolution. A short scene depicting oppression is performed, then replayed. Spect-actors stop the action, replace the protagonist, and try strategies to overcome the oppressor.
Joker: A neutral facilitator who bridges stage and audience, encouraging dialogue, teasing out contradictions, and ensuring the forum becomes a ‘space of rehearsal’ not a lecture.
Simultaneous Dramaturgy: The audience directs actions in real time, co-authoring the narrative. This decolonises the story, placing means of production in the community’s hands.
8. Voice and Text: The Phonetics Formula |
Clear Delivery = Articulation + Breath + Resonance + Intention
The actor’s vocal instrument obeys a physiological ‘formula’ that links text to audible meaning. Mastery of each component ensures that every word reaches the back row with emotional colour.
Articulation: The crisp formation of consonant sounds using tongue, teeth, lips, and palate. Without it, the text becomes mush.
Breath: Diaphragmatic support provides the power and sustain. The phrase is shaped by breath; anxiety tightens it, release opens it.
Resonance: Amplification through chest, mouth, and mask resonators. Rich resonance adds warmth, authority, and character-specific timbre.
Intention: Every utterance is an action (a ‘want’). The speaker’s objective determines pitch, pace, pause, and inflection, connecting sound to subtext.
9. Semiotics of Theatre: The Sign-Reading Equation |
Performance Sign = Signifier (material) + Signified (meaning) + Interpreter
Theatre is a dense system of signs. Keir Elam and others built upon Saussure and Peirce to create a formula for decoding the stage. Every object, gesture, and sound becomes polysemic text.
Signifier: The physical presence – a crown, a red light, a specific gait. Its material form is culturally and contextually loaded.
Signified: The concept or emotion evoked – authority, danger, arrogance. Meaning shifts as signs combine or clash with other signifiers.
Interpreter: The spectator actively constructs meaning, informed by personal ideology and the ‘horizon of expectations’. The same sign reads differently across audiences.
Icon, Index, Symbol: An icon resembles what it represents (a painted tree). An index points causally (smoke indicates fire). A symbol is arbitrary convention (a crown for monarchy). The stage interweaves all three.
10. Dramatic Irony and the Peripeteia Theorem |
Dramatic Irony = Audience Knowledge – Character Knowledge
Peripeteia = Reversal of Fortune (triggered by Anagnorisis)
These twin pillars of tragic effect operate as a mathematical relationship. Irony hinges on an informational gap; peripeteia on a sudden reversal that follows recognition.
Dramatic Irony: When the audience understands the full implications of speech or action but the character remains blind. It generates suspense, pathos, or grim humour.
Peripeteia: The protagonist’s fortune swings from good to bad (or vice versa). It is not random but logically connected to prior action, often after a moment of recognition (anagnorisis).
Anagnorisis: The passage from ignorance to knowledge, as Oedipus realises his true identity. It cements the tragic formula: recognition → reversal → catastrophe.
11. The Chorus Theorem: Collective Voice and Moral Compass |
Chorus = Moral Commentator + Emotional Amplifier + Ritual Bridge
The Greek chorus functions as a theoretical ‘constant’ in early tragedy: a communal presence that mediates between the divine, the protagonist, and the polis. Even modern choruses follow its logic.
Moral Commentator: The chorus voices collective ethics, often articulating the fear and hope that the audience feels. They may warn against hubris or mourn impending doom.
Emotional Amplifier: Through strophe and antistrophe, the chorus heightens affective response, translating individual suffering into universal lament.
Ritual Bridge: They create a liminal space, blending music, dance, and poetry. This bridges the mythological past with the present audience, preserving the play’s civic and religious function.
12. Reception Theory: The Spectator’s Horizon of Expectations |
Meaning = Text + Reader’s (Spectator’s) Horizon of Expectations
Hans Robert Jauss’s formulation places the spectator at the centre of meaning-making. Performance is incomplete until it encounters an interpreting audience whose cultural frame reshapes the work.
Horizon of Expectations: The shared set of assumptions, genre knowledge, and social values an audience brings. A work can confirm, challenge, or shatter this horizon.
