All living cells are surrounded by a cell surface membrane that separates the cell contents from the external environment. The membrane is selectively permeable, allowing some substances to cross while restricting others. This regulated movement is essential for obtaining nutrients, excreting wastes, and maintaining internal conditions. Several mechanisms enable substances to move into and out of cells, including diffusion, facilitated diffusion, osmosis, active transport, and bulk transport processes. Understanding these mechanisms is fundamental in A-Level Biology, as they underpin many physiological processes such as nutrient absorption in the gut, nerve impulse transmission, and kidney function.

1. Cell Membrane Structure and Transport Overview | 细胞膜结构与转运概述

The cell membrane is primarily composed of a phospholipid bilayer. Phospholipids have hydrophilic phosphate heads facing outward and hydrophobic fatty acid tails facing inward. This arrangement allows small, non-polar molecules (such as O₂ and CO₂) to diffuse through directly, while larger or charged particles cannot easily pass without assistance.

细胞膜主要由磷脂双分子层构成。磷脂的亲水磷酸头部朝外,疏水脂肪酸尾部朝内。这种结构使小分子、非极性物质(如O₂和CO₂)能够直接透过,而较大或带电荷的粒子则无法轻易通过,需要协助。

The fluid mosaic model describes the membrane as a dynamic structure where proteins float within or on the phospholipid bilayer. Intrinsic proteins, such as channel proteins and carrier proteins, span the membrane and facilitate the transport of specific substances. Extrinsic proteins are often involved in cell signalling or act as enzymes. Cholesterol molecules within the membrane help regulate fluidity.

2. Simple Diffusion | 简单扩散

Simple diffusion is the net movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration, down a concentration gradient. This passive process does not require metabolic energy (ATP). Particles move due to their random kinetic energy, eventually reaching an equilibrium where they are evenly distributed.

简单扩散是指粒子从较高浓度区域向较低浓度区域的净移动,顺浓度梯度进行。这种被动过程不需要代谢能量(ATP)。粒子依靠其自身随机的动能移动,最终达到均匀分布的平衡状态。

Only small, non-polar molecules such as oxygen (O₂), carbon dioxide (CO₂), and lipid-soluble substances (e.g., steroid hormones) can cross the phospholipid bilayer by simple diffusion. The rate of diffusion is directly proportional to the concentration gradient, temperature, and surface area of the membrane, and inversely proportional to the thickness of the exchange surface.
