📚 Properties of Waves |
Waves are all around us – from the ripples on a pond, to the sound we hear, to the light that enables us to see. In physics, a wave is a disturbance that transfers energy from one point to another, typically without the permanent displacement of particles of the medium. The study of wave properties is crucial for understanding a wide range of phenomena in IGCSE Physics, including sound, light, and seismic waves.
1. What are Waves? |
In physics, a wave is a moving disturbance that transfers energy from one location to another without any net transfer of matter. Consider a water wave: as the wave passes, the water surface rises and falls, but a floating leaf would bob up and down rather than move horizontally with the wave. This demonstrates that energy is being carried forward while the water particles simply oscillate about a fixed equilibrium point.
Waves are broadly classified into two categories: mechanical waves, which require a material medium (solid, liquid, or gas) to propagate, and electromagnetic waves, which can travel through a vacuum. Sound and water waves are mechanical; light, radio waves, and X-rays are electromagnetic.
2. Transverse and Longitudinal Waves |
In a transverse wave, the particles of the medium vibrate perpendicularly (at 90°) to the direction of energy transfer. Imagine shaking a rope up and down: the wave travels horizontally along the rope, but the rope’s material moves up and down. Light and all other electromagnetic waves are transverse; so are ripples on a water surface and S-waves (secondary waves) from earthquakes.
In a longitudinal wave, the particles vibrate back and forth along the same direction as the energy transfer. A sound wave travelling through air is a classic example: as the wave passes, air molecules are alternately pushed together (compression) and pulled apart (rarefaction). The P-waves (primary waves) produced by earthquakes are also longitudinal.
The key differences are summarised below.
