Thermal Energy | 热能

📚 Thermal Energy | 热能

Thermal energy is the energy a substance possesses due to the random motion of its particles. In IGCSE Physics, this topic connects the microscopic behaviour of molecules to observable changes like temperature rise, expansion, and changes of state. You will learn how thermal energy transfers by conduction, convection, and radiation, and how to calculate energy changes during heating and phase transitions using specific heat capacity and latent heat.

1. What is Thermal Energy? |

Thermal energy is the total kinetic energy of all particles in a substance due to their random motion. It depends on the mass, temperature, and type of material. The faster the particles move, the greater the thermal energy. Unlike temperature, thermal energy is an extensive property – a large iceberg has more thermal energy than a cup of hot tea even though its temperature is lower.

The SI unit of thermal energy is the joule (J). In everyday contexts, you may see calories used, but in the IGCSE syllabus we always work in joules. Thermal energy is transferred from hotter objects to cooler ones until thermal equilibrium is reached.

2. Temperature vs Thermal Energy |

Temperature measures the average kinetic energy of particles in a substance. It does not depend on the amount of material. Two bodies may have the same temperature but vastly different thermal energies if their masses differ. For example, a bath of water at 40 °C contains far more thermal energy than a beaker of water at the same 40 °C.

Thermometers measure temperature, not thermal energy. When you heat a substance, its particles gain kinetic energy, and the temperature rises. However, during a change of state, the temperature remains constant even though thermal energy continues to be supplied – this energy is used to overcome intermolecular forces rather than to increase kinetic energy.

3. Heat Transfer: Conduction |

Conduction is the transfer of thermal energy through a solid without any overall movement of the material itself. It occurs primarily in solids, especially metals, where free electrons and atomic vibrations carry the energy. When one end of a metal rod is heated, particles vibrate more vigorously and pass on their extra kinetic energy to neighbouring particles along the rod.

Metals are excellent conductors because of their delocalised electrons that can move rapidly through the lattice, transferring energy much faster than atomic vibrations alone. Non-metals such as wood, plastic, and glass are poor conductors (insulators) because they lack free electrons. In insulators, heat travels only by slowly vibrating atoms passing energy from one to the next.

The rate of conduction depends on the temperature difference, the cross-sectional area, the length of the material, and its thermal conductivity. In IGCSE, you only need a qualitative understanding of these factors.

4. Heat Transfer: Convection |

Convection is the transfer of thermal energy through a fluid (liquid or gas) by the movement of the fluid itself. When a fluid is heated, it expands and becomes less dense. The warmer, less dense fluid rises, while cooler, denser fluid sinks, creating a convection current that transfers heat throughout the fluid.

A common example is a radiator heating a room. Air near the radiator warms up, expands, and rises towards the ceiling. Cooler air is drawn in near the floor to replace it, setting up a convection current that evenly distributes warmth. Similarly, in a kettle, water heated at the bottom rises and allows cooler water to descend, heating the whole volume.

Convection cannot occur in solids because particles are fixed in place and cannot flow. It also requires the presence of gravity to create buoyancy-driven movement.

5. Heat Transfer: Radiation |

Thermal radiation is the emission of electromagnetic waves, mainly in the infrared region, from the surface of any object above absolute zero. Unlike conduction and convection, radiation does not require a medium and can travel through a vacuum. This is how the Sun’s energy reaches Earth.

All objects emit and absorb radiation. The hotter an object, the more infrared radiation it emits in a given time. Dull, dark surfaces are better absorbers and emitters of radiation than shiny, light-coloured surfaces. This is why solar panels are often black and tea pots are shiny to reflect heat.

The balance between absorbed and emitted radiation determines whether an object warms up, cools down, or stays at a constant temperature. For IGCSE, you need to know that black surfaces are the best absorbers and emitters, while silver or white surfaces are poor emitters and good reflectors.

6. Specific Heat Capacity | 比热容

Specific heat capacity (c) is the amount of energy required to raise the temperature of 1 kilogram of a substance by 1 degree Celsius (1 °C) without changing its state. It is measured in joules per kilogram per degree Celsius (J/(kg °C)).

Different materials have different specific heat capacities. Water has a very high specific heat capacity of about 4200 J/(kg °C), meaning it takes a lot of energy to heat up water. This property makes water an excellent coolant and helps moderate the Earth’s climate. Metals typically have low specific heat capacities, so they heat up and cool down quickly.

The energy transferred to a substance when it is heated or cooled without a change of state is given by the equation:

Q = mcΔθ

Here, Q is the thermal energy in joules (J), m is mass in kilograms (kg), c is specific heat capacity in J/(kg °C), and Δθ is the temperature change in °C (or K, as the size of a degree is the same).

Q = mcΔθ

7. Heat Capacity and Thermal Energy Calculations |

Heat capacity (C) is the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of an entire object by 1 °C. It is related to specific heat capacity by C = mc, and its unit is J/°C. While specific heat capacity is an intensive property, heat capacity is extensive – it depends on how much material you have.

In exam questions, you may be asked to calculate the energy needed to heat a specific mass, or to find the specific heat capacity from experimental data. Always check the units: mass must be in kg, temperature change in °C, and energy in J. If mass is given in grams, convert to kilograms by dividing by 1000.

Example: How much energy is required to heat 2.0 kg of aluminium from 20 °C to 100 °C? (c for aluminium = 900 J/(kg °C)). Using Q = mcΔθ = 2.0 × 900 × (100−20) = 144 000 J (144 kJ).

用Q = mcΔθ = 2.0 × 900 × (100−20) = 144 000 J(144 kJ)。

8. Latent Heat: Melting and Boiling |

When a substance changes state, the temperature remains constant even though heating continues. The energy supplied during melting or boiling is called latent heat, and it is used to break or weaken the bonds between particles rather than to increase kinetic energy.

Specific latent heat (L) is the energy required to change the state of 1 kg of a substance without a change in temperature. There are two types: specific latent heat of fusion (melting or freezing) and specific latent heat of vaporisation (boiling or condensing). The unit is J/kg.

单位是 J/kg。

The energy required for a change of state is calculated with:

Q = mL

where Q is the thermal energy (J), m is mass (kg), and L is the specific latent heat (J/kg). For melting, use Lf; for boiling, use Lv. For water, Lf is about 334 000 J/kg and Lv is about 2 260 000 J/kg. The large value for vaporisation reflects the considerable energy needed to completely separate liquid molecules into a gas.

Q = mL

9. Heating and Cooling Curves |

A heating curve is a graph of temperature against time (or energy supplied) for a substance as it is steadily heated. It shows horizontal plateaus where a change of state occurs, during which temperature stays constant despite continuous heating.

For a solid being heated until it becomes a gas, the curve shows: a rising segment where the solid warms up; a flat plateau at the melting point where solid turns to liquid; another rising segment as the liquid heats up; a flat plateau at the boiling point where liquid turns to gas; then a further rise if the gas is heated. The lengths of the flat regions correspond to the latent heats – the higher the latent heat, the longer the plateau for the same power input.

A cooling curve shows the reverse: plateaus at condensation and freezing temperatures. Understanding these curves helps visualise that during phase changes, energy goes into changing the arrangement rather than increasing speed.

10. Thermal Equilibrium and Energy Conservation |

When two objects at different temperatures are in thermal contact, energy transfers from the hotter object to the cooler one until they reach the same temperature – this is thermal equilibrium. The principle of conservation of energy tells us that, assuming no energy loss to the surroundings, the thermal energy lost by the hot object equals the thermal energy gained by the cold object.

This idea is used in calorimetry to determine the specific heat capacity or latent heat of a substance by mixing it with water in an insulated container. The equation can be expressed as:

m₁c₁Δθ₁ = m₂c₂Δθ₂

where the subscripts refer to the two materials, and the temperature changes are measured carefully. In practice, some energy is always lost, so the experimental values may differ slightly from standard data.

m₁c₁Δθ₁ = m₂c₂Δθ₂

11. Practical Applications and Examples |

Thermal energy concepts appear in countless everyday and engineering contexts. Here are a few you should recognise for your IGCSE exam:

  • Central heating systems use convection to circulate hot water or air. Radiators are painted white or metallic to radiate less energy outward while convection drives warm air around the room.
  • Insulation in homes – loft insulation traps air (a poor conductor), reducing conduction; cavity wall insulation minimises convection currents; double glazing traps a layer of air between panes, slowing heat transfer via conduction and convection.
  • Cooling of engines – water is used as a coolant because of its high specific heat capacity; it can absorb large amounts of heat without a big temperature rise.
  • Vacuum flasks – they employ a vacuum between double walls to prevent conduction and convection, and the silvered inner surfaces reflect infrared radiation, keeping contents hot or cold.
  • Sea breezes – during the day, land heats up faster than the sea; warm air over land rises, and cooler air from the sea moves in, creating a convection current on a large scale.

12. Common Misconceptions |

Many students confuse heat and temperature. Remember, temperature is the average kinetic energy of particles, while thermal energy is the total. A large block of ice at 0 °C has more thermal energy than a small drop of water at 10 °C because of its much greater mass, even though its temperature is lower.

Another misconception: heat is not a substance but a process of energy transfer. ‘Heat’ as a noun is acceptable shorthand, but always think of it as energy in transit. Also, during melting or boiling, temperature does not rise because the energy is used to break bonds, not to speed up particles. Finally, specific heat capacity does not depend on mass – it is a property of the material. Getting these distinctions clear will help you avoid common errors on exam papers.
