The EM Spectrum |

📚 The EM Spectrum |

The electromagnetic spectrum is the entire range of electromagnetic waves arranged by wavelength or frequency. From the longest radio waves to the shortest gamma rays, these waves all travel at the speed of light in a vacuum and are vital to communication, medicine, industry and our everyday lives. In this article we explore the properties, the wave equation, and the uses and dangers of each region of the EM spectrum, as required for Edexcel IGCSE Physics.

1. What is the Electromagnetic Spectrum? |

The electromagnetic (EM) spectrum is a continuous range of electromagnetic waves ordered by increasing frequency or decreasing wavelength. Electromagnetic waves are transverse waves that consist of oscillating electric and magnetic fields perpendicular to each other and to the direction of energy transfer. Unlike mechanical waves, EM waves do not need a medium to propagate; they can travel through a vacuum at a speed of approximately 3.0 x 10⁸ m/s, known as the speed of light, c.

2. Common Properties of EM Waves |

All electromagnetic waves share several key properties. They are all transverse waves. They can travel through a vacuum, which is why light from the Sun reaches the Earth. In a vacuum, every EM wave travels at the same speed, c = 3.0 × 10⁸ m/s. EM waves carry energy, and the amount of energy they transfer depends on their frequency: the higher the frequency, the more energy the wave carries. They can be reflected, refracted, diffracted and can undergo interference, just like other transverse waves.

3. The Wave Equation for EM Waves |

c = f λ

For any EM wave, the speed c is equal to the product of its frequency f and its wavelength λ. Because c is constant in a vacuum, frequency and wavelength are inversely proportional: a wave with a high frequency has a short wavelength, and a wave with a low frequency has a long wavelength. This relationship allows us to calculate any quantity if the other two are known. For example, a radio wave with a frequency of 100 MHz (1.0 × 10⁸ Hz) has a wavelength λ = c / f = 3.0 × 10⁸ / 1.0 × 10⁸ = 3.0 m.

4. Radio Waves |

Radio waves have the longest wavelengths (from about 1 mm to 100 km) and the lowest frequencies in the EM spectrum. They are produced by oscillating electric currents in aerials and transmitters. Radio waves are primarily used for communication, such as AM and FM radio broadcasting, television signals and long‑distance communication with satellites. They can diffract around large obstacles and reflect off the ionosphere, enabling signals to travel beyond the horizon. Although radio waves are generally safe, very high intensities can cause heating of body tissues.

5. Microwaves | 微波

Microwaves have shorter wavelengths than radio waves, typically ranging from about 1 mm to 1 m. They are produced by special electronic devices such as klystrons and magnetrons. Microwaves are well known for their use in microwave ovens, where the microwave frequency is chosen to match the natural vibration frequency of water molecules; the absorbed energy causes the water molecules to vibrate more vigorously, heating the food. Microwaves are also used in satellite communications, mobile phone networks, Wi‑Fi and radar. A potential danger is that internal heating of body tissues can cause burns and cataracts if exposure is intense.

6. Infrared Radiation | 红外线

Infrared (IR) radiation has wavelengths longer than visible light but shorter than microwaves, from about 700 nm to 1 mm. All warm objects emit infrared radiation; the hotter the object, the more infrared it radiates. IR is used in thermal imaging cameras, remote controls, optical fibre communication and in toasters and grills. Infrared can be detected by thermistors and thermopiles. The main hazard is skin burns from prolonged exposure to intense IR sources, such as heat lamps. Overexposure can also cause damage to the eyes.

7. Visible Light | 可见光

Visible light is the only part of the EM spectrum that we can see with our eyes. Its wavelengths range from approximately 400 nm (violet) to 700 nm (red). Visible light is emitted by hot objects like the Sun, incandescent bulbs and LEDs. It is essential for photosynthesis in plants and is used in optical fibres for high‑speed data transmission. Lasers, which produce a narrow, coherent beam of visible light, are employed in barcode scanners, CD/DVD players and medical surgery. Intense visible light, especially from lasers, can damage the retina and cause permanent blindness.

8. Ultraviolet Radiation |

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation has wavelengths shorter than visible light, from about 10 nm to 400 nm. The Sun is the main natural source of UV; it can also be produced artificially by mercury vapour lamps and UV LEDs. UV radiation is used to sterilise medical equipment and water because it kills bacteria and viruses. It causes fluorescent materials to glow, making it useful in security marking and detecting forged banknotes. However, overexposure to UV can tan the skin, cause sunburn, premature ageing and significantly increase the risk of skin cancer and cataracts. UV‑B and UV‑C are particularly damaging.

9. X‑rays | X 射线

X‑rays have very short wavelengths, typically from about 0.01 nm to 10 nm. They are produced when high‑speed electrons collide with a metal target in an X‑ray tube. X‑rays are highly penetrating and are widely used in medical imaging to view broken bones and in airport security scanners to inspect luggage. They are also used in radiotherapy to treat certain cancers. Because X‑rays are a form of ionising radiation, they can knock electrons out of atoms, damaging DNA and causing mutations or cancer. Therefore, exposure must be kept as low as reasonably achievable, with lead shielding and protective aprons used for both patients and staff.

10. Gamma Rays |

Gamma rays have the shortest wavelengths (less than 0.01 nm) and the highest frequencies of all EM waves. They are produced by changes in the nucleus of an atom, such as during radioactive decay, and by certain astronomical events. In medicine, gamma rays are used to sterilise surgical instruments, to treat cancer through targeted radiotherapy, and as a tracer in medical imaging (e.g. PET scans). Industrially, they are used to inspect welds and detect cracks in metal structures. Gamma rays are extremely dangerous ionising radiation, capable of penetrating deep into the body and causing severe cell damage, radiation sickness and increased cancer risk. Thick lead or concrete is needed to absorb them.
