📚 Thermal Concepts |

Thermal physics deals with the study of temperature, heat, and their relationship to energy and work. Understanding thermal concepts is essential for explaining everyday phenomena such as boiling water, melting ice, and the transfer of energy through materials. This article covers the fundamental ideas that underpin the IB Physics thermal syllabus, including temperature measurement, internal energy, heat capacity, phase changes, and the mechanisms of heat transfer.

1. Temperature and Thermal Equilibrium |

Temperature is a measure of the average random kinetic energy of the particles in a substance. When two objects at different temperatures are placed in contact, energy transfers from the hotter object to the cooler one until they reach the same temperature. This condition is called thermal equilibrium, and no net energy transfer occurs between the objects at equilibrium.

The direction of spontaneous heat flow is always from a region of higher temperature to one of lower temperature. Thermal equilibrium is the foundation on which temperature scales are built, because it ensures that a thermometer can read the temperature of its surroundings once equilibrium is established.

2. The Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics |

If two systems A and B are each in thermal equilibrium with a third system C, then A and B are in thermal equilibrium with each other. This statement is known as the zeroth law of thermodynamics. It justifies the use of a thermometer as system C: when the thermometer reaches equilibrium with both A and B, we can conclude that A and B are at the same temperature.

The zeroth law is considered more fundamental than the first and second laws, hence its name, and it formally establishes temperature as a measurable physical quantity.

3. Measuring Temperature: Thermometers |

Temperature is measured using the variation of a thermometric property with temperature. Common thermometric properties include the volume of a liquid (liquid-in-glass thermometer), the electrical resistance of a metal (resistance thermometer), and the pressure of a gas at constant volume (constant-volume gas thermometer). A thermometric property must change continuously and monotonically with temperature.

To construct a temperature scale, two fixed points are chosen, such as the ice point (0 °C) and the steam point (100 °C) for the Celsius scale. The interval between them is divided into equal parts. Modern definitions use the kelvin scale, where absolute zero (0 K) is the lowest possible temperature and the triple point of water defines 273.16 K.

The constant-volume gas thermometer is particularly important because it gives readings that are nearly independent of the gas used, provided the gas is at low pressure. This leads to the concept of an ideal gas temperature scale.

4. Heat as Energy Transfer |

Heat is defined as the transfer of energy between a system and its surroundings due to a temperature difference. It is not a property stored within an object; rather, an object possesses internal energy. The symbol for heat is Q, and it is measured in joules (J). When heat flows into a system, Q is taken as positive.

It is important to distinguish heat from temperature and internal energy. Temperature tells us the direction of heat flow, while internal energy is the total energy stored by the particles. A large iceberg may have a lower temperature than a cup of hot coffee, yet it can contain far more internal energy because of its much larger mass.

5. Internal Energy | 内能

The internal energy U of a substance is the sum of the random kinetic energies and potential energies of all its constituent particles. The kinetic component arises from the translational, rotational, and vibrational motion of atoms or molecules. The potential component comes from the intermolecular forces between particles; it is positive when particles are pulled apart and negative when they are bound together.

For an ideal gas, internal energy depends only on temperature because intermolecular forces are assumed negligible. In real substances, both temperature and phase affect internal energy. During a phase change, the temperature remains constant while the potential energy of the particles changes, indicating a change in internal energy without a temperature change.

6. Heat Capacity and Specific Heat Capacity |

The heat capacity C of an object is the amount of heat required to raise its temperature by one kelvin: C = Q / ΔT, measured in J K⁻¹. It depends on the material and the mass of the object. The specific heat capacity c is the heat capacity per unit mass: c = Q / (m ΔT), with units J kg⁻¹ K⁻¹.

Water has a very high specific heat capacity (about 4200 J kg⁻¹ K⁻¹), which is why it takes a long time to heat up and cools down slowly. This property makes water an excellent coolant and helps moderate the Earth’s climate.

When two substances at different temperatures are mixed in an insulated container, the heat lost by the hotter substance equals the heat gained by the cooler one, provided no heat is exchanged with the surroundings. This principle is used in calorimetry experiments to determine specific heat capacities.

7. Phase Changes and Latent Heat |

When a substance changes phase – for example, from solid to liquid (melting) or liquid to gas (vaporisation) – its temperature stays constant despite the addition or removal of energy. The energy supplied during melting is used to break intermolecular bonds, increasing the potential energy component of internal energy rather than the kinetic energy.

The latent heat L is the thermal energy required to change the phase of 1 kg of a substance without a change in temperature: L = Q / m. The specific latent heat of fusion L_f refers to melting or freezing, while the specific latent heat of vaporisation L_v applies to boiling or condensation. For water, L_f ≈ 334 kJ kg⁻¹ and L_v ≈ 2260 kJ kg⁻¹.

During condensation and freezing, latent heat is released to the surroundings. This is why steam burns can be more severe than boiling water burns; steam releases a large amount of energy upon condensing on the skin.

8. Conduction | 热传导

Conduction is the transfer of thermal energy through a material without any bulk movement of the material itself. It occurs primarily via collisions between particles and, in metals, through the motion of free electrons. The rate of heat transfer by conduction depends on the temperature difference, the cross-sectional area, the distance over which heat travels, and the thermal conductivity of the material.

Good conductors, such as copper and aluminium, have high thermal conductivity and are used in cooking utensils and heat sinks. Insulators, such as wood, plastic, and air, conduct heat poorly and are used to reduce unwanted energy transfers.

9. Convection | 热对流

Convection is the transfer of heat by the mass movement of a fluid (liquid or gas). When a fluid is heated, it expands, becomes less dense, and rises. Cooler, denser fluid then sinks to take its place, setting up a convection current. This process transfers energy from hotter to cooler regions and is common in household heating, ocean currents, and atmospheric circulation.

Convection cannot occur in solids because the particles are fixed in place. The rate of convection depends on the surface area, the temperature difference, and the properties of the fluid. Forced convection, using fans or pumps, significantly increases the rate of heat transfer.

10. Radiation |

All objects emit electromagnetic radiation as a result of their temperature. This process is called thermal radiation and does not require a material medium; it can travel through a vacuum. The rate at which an object radiates energy is proportional to the fourth power of its absolute temperature (Stefan–Boltzmann law): P ∝ T⁴.

A perfect emitter, known as a black body, absorbs all incident radiation and radiates the maximum possible energy at each temperature. The peak wavelength of emitted radiation shifts to shorter values as temperature increases, explaining why a heated metal glows red, then orange, and eventually white.

Surfaces that are dark and matt are good absorbers and emitters of radiation, while shiny, light-coloured surfaces are poor absorbers and poor emitters. This principle is used in designing solar panels and thermal insulation.

11. Molecular Kinetic Energy and Temperature |

For an ideal gas, the absolute temperature is directly proportional to the average translational kinetic energy of the particles. For a monatomic ideal gas, the average kinetic energy per particle is given by (3/2) kT, where k is the Boltzmann constant (1.38 × 10⁻²³ J K⁻¹). This relationship shows that at absolute zero (0 K), particles would have minimum possible kinetic energy.

The link between temperature and kinetic energy explains why increasing temperature increases the pressure of a gas at constant volume: faster particles hit the container walls more frequently and with greater momentum change. It also underpins the understanding of diffusion and Brownian motion.

12. Everyday Applications and Summary |

Thermal concepts appear in countless everyday situations: the double-walled vacuum flask uses a vacuum to reduce conduction and convection, while silvered walls minimise radiation. In cooking, metals are used for pans to conduct heat efficiently, while oven gloves exploit poor conductivity for safety. Understanding latent heat helps in designing refrigeration and air conditioning systems that rely on evaporation and condensation cycles.

In environmental physics, the high specific heat capacity of water stabilises coastal climates, and the greenhouse effect relies on the balance between incoming solar radiation and thermal radiation emitted by the Earth. By mastering thermal concepts, IB Physics students develop a robust framework for analysing energy transfers and the behaviour of matter on both macroscopic and microscopic scales.
