Electrical Power | 电功率

📚 Electrical Power | 电功率

Electrical power is a central concept in electricity that describes how quickly electrical energy is transferred from a source to a device or from one form to another. In the Edexcel IGCSE Science specification, power is linked directly to current, voltage and resistance, and it forms the basis for understanding energy consumption in circuits. Being able to calculate power and energy reliably is essential for analysing the performance of electrical appliances and ensuring they operate safely.

1. Definition of Electrical Power |

Electrical power is defined as the amount of electrical energy transferred per unit time. When a charge moves through a potential difference, work is done and energy is transferred to the component. The rate at which this energy is transferred is the power. In other words, if two different light bulbs are connected to the same battery, the bulb with a higher power rating will glow brighter because it converts electrical energy into light and heat more rapidly.

2. Power Formula: P = I × V | 功率公式 P = I × V

The most fundamental equation for electrical power is P = I × V, where P represents power measured in watts (W), I is the current in amperes (A), and V is the potential difference in volts (V). This relationship shows that power is the product of the rate of flow of charge (current) and the energy carried by each unit of charge (voltage). If a component has a fixed resistance, increasing the supply voltage will raise the current, causing a much larger increase in power.

最基本的电功率公式是 P = I × V,其中 P 代表功率,单位为瓦特 (W);I 是电流,单位为安培 (A);V 是电势差,单位为伏特 (V)。

3. Deriving Other Forms: P = I²R and P = V²/R |

By combining P = I × V with Ohm’s law (V = I × R), we can obtain two alternative power equations that are especially useful in different situations. Substituting V = I × R gives P = I² × R. This form is convenient when you know the current flowing through a component and its resistance. Rearranging Ohm’s law to I = V / R and substituting gives P = V² / R, which is ideal when you are given the voltage across a component and its resistance. All three equations are mathematically equivalent for ohmic conductors, and selecting the appropriate one saves time in calculations.

Known Quantities Recommended Formula
Current (I) and Voltage (V) P = I × V
Current (I) and Resistance (R) P = I² × R
Voltage (V) and Resistance (R) P = V² / R
  • P = I²R helps explain why doubling the current through a resistor quadruples the power, which has important implications for heating in cables.
  • P = V² / R shows that for the same voltage, a lower resistance results in a higher power output (useful for kettles and heaters).

4. Units of Power: Watts and Kilowatts |

The SI unit of power is the watt (W), which is equivalent to one joule per second (J/s). In everyday life, electrical power is often expressed in kilowatts (kW), where 1 kW = 1000 W. For example, a microwave oven may be rated at 800 W, while an electric shower can be as high as 8.5 kW. When solving numerical problems, always convert all quantities to base units unless the question specifically asks for an answer in kW or kWh. Using mixed units (e.g. kilowatts and seconds) is a common mistake that leads to wrong results.

5. Energy Transferred: E = P × t |

The energy transferred by an appliance over a period of time is calculated using E = P × t, where E is energy in joules (J), P is power in watts (W) and t is time in seconds (s). Because P = I × V, we can also write E = V × I × t. This is a particularly powerful relationship: it tells us that the total energy dissipated in a component depends on voltage, current and the length of time it operates. For instance, a 60 W lamp left on for 5 minutes (300 s) transfers E = 60 W × 300 s = 18 000 J of energy.

由于 P = I × V,我们也可以写成 E = V × I × t。

6. Kilowatt-hour (kWh) |

Although the joule is the standard scientific unit of energy, electricity suppliers use the kilowatt-hour (kWh) because it is a much larger and more practical unit for domestic billing. One kilowatt-hour is the energy transferred when a 1 kW appliance runs for 1 hour. The conversion factor is: 1 kWh = 1000 W × 3600 s = 3 600 000 J, or 3.6 × 10⁶ J. To calculate the energy used by a household appliance in kWh, use E (kWh) = Power (kW) × time (h). For example, a 2 kW iron used for 0.5 h consumes 1 kWh. Understanding kWh is vital for reading electricity meters and calculating the cost of running appliances.

7. Electrical Appliances and Power Ratings |

Every mains-powered appliance carries a label showing its power rating (in W or kW) and often its voltage and current. Common power ratings include LED bulbs (5–15 W), television sets (100–400 W), kettles (2–3 kW), and air conditioners (1–5 kW). The total power of all appliances connected to a socket should never exceed the circuit’s maximum load. In the UK, a ring circuit is typically protected by a 30 A or 32 A fuse, so the maximum power from a 230 V supply is P = 230 V × 32 A = 7360 W. Exceeding this limit could cause overheating and pose a fire risk.

在英国,环形电路通常由 30 A 或 32 A 的保险丝保护,因此在 230 V 电源下,最大功率为 P = 230 V × 32 A = 7360 W。
